Creation
Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep features eight people who can wield Keyblades: Ventus, Aqua, Terra, Master Eraqus, Mickey, Master Xehanort, Vanitas, and Yen Sid. Near the end of the game, Master Xehanort explains to Terra, Aqua, and Ventus that the Keyblades at Keyblade Graveyard are the remains of the Keyblade Wielders after the Keyblade War between the battle of Light and Darkness.
The original χ-blade's existence was intimately linked with the existence of the true Kingdom Hearts, and so it was destroyed along with Kingdom Hearts in the first Keyblade War. Though Master Xehanort's research suggested that it can be reforged by fusing a heart of pure light with one of pure darkness, he later concludes that the χ-blade can be truly restored only by uniting seven hearts of pure light with thirteen hearts of pure darkness. The lesser Keyblade of heart, whose existence opens a path to Kingdom Hearts, can be forged from the union of seven hearts of pure light.

Should a Keyblade be damaged, it can be repaired. In Kingdom Hearts III, Way to the Dawn was snapped in half by a Demon Tower, but it was later repaired by Riku Replica. Mickey's Kingdom Key D was repaired via an upgrade by fusing his Star Seeker with it, creating Star Cluster. Lea's Bond of the Blaze was broken by Xemnas; however, he was later able to summon a repaired version.

Early history
Long before the events of the Dark Seeker Saga, in the "age of fairy tales" when the world was whole, Kingdom Hearts gave light to the world. However, it remained out of mankind's reach, as it was protected by its counterpart, the χ-blade. According to legend, many came to desire the light, and their greed and jealousy introduced darkness into the World. In order to conquer the light of Kingdom Hearts, people forged the first Keyblades in the image of the χ-blade, and they clashed with each other in a great Keyblade War that involved those who served the light, those who served the darkness, those who sought balance, and those who simply sought power; the conflict embroiled even those who did not desire Kingdom Hearts.

In truth, however, the first known Keyblades were created by the Master of Masters, who was capable of extracting them from the hearts of people using his knowledge of the χ-blade, rather than forging them. The conflict embroiled even those who did not desire Kingdom Hearts and took the lives of thousands; it also extinguished the light from the world and trapped Kingdom Hearts in the deepest darkness while the χ-blade shattered into twenty pieces: seven lights and thirteen darknesses. The final site of the Keyblade War became the barren Keyblade Graveyard, littered with ancient Keyblades.

Because light remained in the hearts of children, it was able to draw the fragments of the World back together, creating several separate worlds. The remaining Keyblade wielders decided to use the Keyblade in order to protect what was left of the Realm of Light. They primarily settled in worlds within the Realm Between, such as the Land of Departure, where the Realm of Light bordered the Realm of Darkness. Memories of the Keyblade War survived in various legends, which disputed whether the Keyblade was a weapon meant to bring salvation or destruction.

Before Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep
Long before Sora's journey, Xehanort and Eraqus became apprentices under Odin, a Keyblade Master, and they served to protect the Realm of Light from darkness. However, Xehanort's natural curiosity about the darkness and his research into the Keyblade War eventually led him to believe that the sovereignty of light upheld by the Keyblade wielders was tyrannical and misguided. Xehanort sought to create a world in which light and darkness existed in equilibrium; due to the lack of balance between these two forces, if he was to accomplish this goal, he would need to unleash a flood of darkness upon the worlds in the form of a second Keyblade War.

While both Xehanort and Eraqus were declared Keyblade Masters, their differing opinions regarding the start of a second Keyblade War caused Xehanort to leave the Land of Departure. Eraqus became the Successor, and he took on Terra and Aqua as his apprentices. Elsewhere, Xehanort resolved to recreate the χ-blade, and when his pupil, Ventus, refused to submit to the darkness, the elderly Keyblade Master extracted the darkness in the boy's heart to create Vanitas. This left Ventus's heart incomplete and almost resulted in the boy's death, but when he survived, he was left in Eraqus's care. In time, Vanitas would be forced to clash with Ventus, thus forging the χ-blade.

Meanwhile, a retired Keyblade Master named Yen Sid took on Mickey Mouse as his apprentice. A former colleague of Eraqus and Xehanort, Yen Sid decided not to involve himself in their quarrel over the start of another Keyblade War. Instead, he chose to keep watch over the balance between light and darkness and oversee Mickey's Mark of Mastery exam.

Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep
Ten years before Sora's first journey, there were eight known Keyblade wielders: Eraqus, Terra, Ventus, Aqua, Xehanort, Vanitas, the retired Yen Sid, and Mickey Mouse.

Intending to sabotage Terra and Aqua's Mark of Mastery exam in accordance with his plot to reforge the χ-blade, Xehanort extended his apologies to Eraqus and requested to be present for the examination, thus ending the feud between Xehanort and Eraqus.

When he visits the Destiny Islands, Terra performs the Bequeathing, granting a young boy named Riku the ability to one day wield the Keyblade himself. Aqua accidentally does this with Kairi in Radiant Garden; she initially intends to perform the ceremony and grant Sora the ability to wield the Keyblade, but Aqua decides against this when she senses that Riku already can.

At the time, Mickey continues his training under Yen Sid to become a Keyblade Master.

When Terra, Aqua, and Ventus confront Xehanort at the Keyblade Graveyard, the elderly Keyblade Master explains that the world serves as the final resting place of the combatants of the Keyblade War. During the fight despite Ventus defeating Vantias, their forced merge allowed the X-blade to be forged and yet despite it being complete on the outside the blade in the two boy's Station of Awakening the merge was incomplete. With Ventus and Aqua along with Mickey, they destroyed it while after losing to Terra, Xehanort uses his Keyblade to extract his heart into the Keyblade wielder's body. But the destruction of X-blade forced everyone out of the Keyblade Graveyard leaving the Lingering Will along with Terra's Keyblade behind.

Returning to the Land of Departure thanks to Ventus' Keyblade opening a gate, Aqua with a catatonic Ventus was surprised to discover their home destroyed. Upon finding her fallen master's Keyblade, Aqua uses it to turn the Land of Departure into Castle Oblivion, hiding Ventus in the Chamber of Repose. Merged together as Terra-Xehanort, when Terra's heart was acting up during the final confrontation with Aqua, Xehanort turned his Keyblade on himself. In doing so, the elderly master caused himself to have amnesia temporarily, thus losing the ability to use the weapon. In a desperate bid to save Terra, Aqua willingly releases her Keyblade and armor to send him back to the realm of light as she fell into the dark realm. While wondering the dark realm, when Aqua hits her lowest point about wanting to give up, she is surrounded by Heartless until she is saved by the Keyblades of her friends.

With Xehanort's plans foiled, Mickey returned the Star Seeker to Yen Sid believing he failed his exam, but Yen Sid hands it back, declaring Mickey a Keyblade Master.

Terra also performs the Keyblade Inheritance Ceremony on Riku, passing the ability on to him. Aqua also does this accidentally with Kairi.
Ventus's heart was set adrift after the battle with Xehanort, he calls out to Sora once more meeting in the young child's station of awakening, as their hearts merged. Not only was Ventus's heart prevented from being damaged any further, but it allowed Sora to go through his own bequeathing ceremony giving him the ability to use the Keyblade in the events to come.

After being found and taken in as an apprentice to Ansem the Wise, Xehanort, along with his master's other apprentices, betrayed Ansem and continued the horrible experiments he forbade. When the worlds first start to disappear, King Mickey realizes that Kingdom Hearts was going to be opened, and went to the Realm of Darkness to find its Keyblade, with which he could seal the door. However, he would also need someone to use a Keyblade from the Realm of Light in concert with him, so he left a letter for Donald Duck and Goofy, asking them to find the chosen wielder of that Keyblade and assist him in saving the worlds. It is also possible for a wielder at the level of a Master to choose someone of a strong enough heart as their successor. This is often done through the Bequeathing, but can also be performed informally when the wielder lets a candidate touch their Keyblade, or if their hearts link together.
<!--Examples, do we use as sources, in-text examples, or delete?
In Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, Terra chose Riku to be his successor, while Aqua accidentally made Kairi a successor when the child touched Aqua's Keyblade. Aqua originally considered choosing Sora to be her successor, but decided against it because Terra had already performed the ritual on Riku, and she did not want to cause the two to fight. However, Sora nonetheless gained the ability to use the Keyblade when Ventus's heart fused with his own.

It has been confirmed, however, that Sora is able to dual-wield Keyblades in his base state, as Sora and Roxas share all of the same abilities.-->
In Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, Terra, Ventus and Aqua have the ability to turn their Keyblades into vehicles and use them to travel to other worlds. This ability has only been demonstrated by the trio and it is unknown if any of the other Keyblade wielders can use it.

Magic
When some wielders summon their Keyblades, they are accompanied by visual effects specific to the user.<!--T, V, A, maybe ME and MX?-->
Keyblades are natural conduits for casting magic, as seen when Sora uses his Keyblade to command his magical attacks. Some Keyblades have the innate ability to enhance specific kinds of magic, and many also augment the user's magical abilities on a more general level. Keyblades can also augment the holder with other powers and abilities that they would not normally be able to use.

Keyblade wielders are also able to wield a second Keyblade using the Synch Blade ability. After Roxas defeats and absorbs Xion, he uses this ability at almost all times, generally with the Oathkeeper and Oblivion Keychains, while Sora only uses this ability while in his Valor, Master, or Final Drive Forms; however, Tetsuya Nomura has confirmed in interviews that Sora is able to dual-wield Keyblades in his base state, as Sora and Roxas share all of the same abilities.

The Keyblade's signature ability is the power to open or close any lock or door, be it to a physical object, to the heart of a person or world, or to a gate or pathway between worlds. For objects like treasure chests, this merely requires tapping the chest, while for more magical locks, the Keyblade generally operates by emitting a bright, thin beam of light from its tip, or by being thrust directly into the keyhole or person's chest.
<!--Their ability to unlock a person’s heart makes them particularly effective weapons against Heartless and Nobodies, but also draws these beings to the wielders. Meanwhile, their power over a world's heart allows a wielder to open or seal the barriers between worlds, or even lock the world's heart to protect it from darkness. Keyblades usually exercise this power by emitting a bright, thin beam of light, but can also work by being directly impaled into a person's chest.-->Tia Dalma implies they can also reverse curses and spells that trap others in different forms; she asked Sora to release her from her mortal form, over trying to persuade the Brethren Court.

Riku also exhibits this ability when he and Kairi meet up at The Castle that Never Was, and he hands a second Keyblade to Kairi to allow her to help protect Sora. Keyblade wielders are also able to allow others to wield this second Keyblade, or have it taken by the other wielder. When Roxas encounters Riku at Memory's Skyscraper he throws his Oblivion at Riku. Riku catches it and actually wields it in battle against him; when Roxas and Sora fight within the Awakening, Sora is able to steal Roxas's Keyblades and use them against him, though only temporarily.
They can also be used to travel to other worlds. Keyblade wielders can summon portals of pure light, which allow them to travel to different worlds.

Appearance
In combat, Keyblades are wielded in the same way as swords, with the specific style varying with the wielder. Despite many Keyblades' apparent frailty or lack of a cutting edge, Keyblades are able to serve as both excellent blunt weapons and supernaturally precise cutting tools seemingly directed by the wielder's intent.<!--not clear if this is in-universe or just window-dressing:
All Keyblades shown have the same distinguishing features that are modeled after a key: a guard with a handle, a hilt and a head at the end of the shaft that resembles the teeth of a skeleton key (with the exception of Fenrir, which is instead modeled after a pin tumbler lock key). All Keyblades also have some theme, usually a World or a person associated with that World, that will reflect in its appearance.

History
When a Keyblade strikes an object it releases a burst of visual effects which differs depending on the Keychain equipped.--> Keyblades are especially effective against creatures connected to hearts or darkness, including the Heartless, Nobodies, Unversed and Dream Eaters.
The origins of the Keyblades is, thus far, unclear. Each game references the special qualities of the wielders and some give vague explanations of the Keyblades' power, but none have shown where the Keyblades originated, how they are created, or what their original purpose might have been. One legend mentioned in Kingdom Hearts states that the Keyblade master saved the world, while another said he wrought chaos and destruction upon it. While these legends may appear to contradict themselves, it can be assumed that the Keyblade master chooses how to use the Keyblade, whether for good or evil. The Keyblade is known throughout the worlds as a unique and powerful weapon. In Atlantica, King Triton and Ursula both knew of the Keyblade and its powers. King Triton did not want Sora to seal the Keyhole because he thought that the Keyblade would send his world into chaos, while Ursula knew that it gave the ability for the one who wields it to travel around the worlds.

One of the pieces of text in the hidden ending video for Kingdom Hearts II, "the Gathering", mentions a Keyblade War. Hundreds of Keyblades can be seen stuck into the ground during this cinematic, as well as the extended "Birth by sleep" cinematic at the end of Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix. It should be noted that none of these seemingly abandoned Keyblades, nor those of protagonists Aqua, Terra or Ventus, have keychains, although the significance of this detail is currently unknown as the history of the Keyblades is unknown and the trio have been shown in later scans to have keychains attached to their keyblades. Many of these Keyblades seem to be based on Keyblades already shown in the series, but many more are entirely original and new. Master Xehanort also stated that the thousands of Keyblades left are the ruins of the Keyblade War.
Keyblades are natural conduits for magic; even Keyblade wielders without formal training are able to perform magic with power rivaling that of expert mages. Skilled wielders may imbue their Keyblade with magic for a variety of effects, including allowing the wielder to inflict greater damage or deal elemental damage to enemies. Keyblades can also be used to channel the powers of light or darkness.fact<!--explain better-->

Keychains
A trained Keyblade wielder can also Formchange their Keyblade, changing its size and shape. This can be used to augment its use as a weapon, or to transform the Keyblade into a vehicle form, known as a "Keyblade Glider".
Nearly all of Sora's Keychain tokens represent some important item from a world he has saved. Usually, Sora is not actually shown to be given the Keychain from one of his many friends, so it is possible that after saving a world, or completing a major step in that direction, the world itself rewards him with the ability to access its power in the form of a unique Keychain.

Keychains that Sora receives from his friends, or from defeating challengers in the Olympus Coliseum, always use a token that is somehow intimately symbolic of that person. While Sora's Keyblade is not specifically a Keyblade of human hearts, like the explicitly named Keyblade of People's Hearts, it is likely that the connections between his heart and those he meets allow him to sometimes access their power as well. Sora and Roxas's Oathkeeper and Oblivion are said to specifically embody Sora's memories of Kairi and Riku and Roxas's oath to Xion before her death (Oathkeeper) as well as her demise (Oblivion) and so it is extremely likely that for "people-Keyblades" like these, the Keychains act as a physical embodiment of the memories Sora and Roxas has of those that are important to them.
A Keyblade wielder can attach a Keychain or Gear to their Keyblade to transform it into a particular form, affecting both its design and abilities. Equipping a Keychain also changes the effect generated when the Keyblade is summoned; this effect is generally based on the Keychain's symbolism.

Prominent Keyblade Wielders
Keyblades seem to be a manifestation of their wielders’ hearts and desires and can act upon these desires even when the user is incapacitated, or even in another world or realm entirely. When Aqua gave up hope and allowed herself to be destroyed in the Realm of Darkness, Terra’s Earthshaker and Ventus’s Wayward Wind came and destroyed the Darksides threatening her, protecting her without a wielder. Also, a Keyblade may appear for its wielder in a time of need even if it is not consciously summoned, such as during Roxas’s battles in The Other Twilight Town or when a large lock blocked Sora’s path in the Underworld.
This is a list of the Keyblade wielders most important to the storyline of the series. For a complete list, see List of Keyblade Wielders.

Sora
Design
The most prominent character in the series to use a Keyblade is Sora, who has used them successfully in the two main games in the series (with one minor incident). His ability to use and possess the Keyblade was a major plot point in the first game. He has used more Keyblades than anyone else in the Kingdom Hearts series; the variations are created through various keychains attached to his original blade, the Kingdom Key.
All Keyblades share the same fundamental features, modeled after a key: a guard with a handle, a hilt, and a head at the end of the shaft that resembles the teeth of a skeleton key, with the exception of the Fenrir and Braveheart, which are instead modeled after a pin tumbler lock key.

Other appearances
The King of Disney Castle, King Mickey's Keyblade is known as "Kingdom Key D". It looks the same as Kingdom Key, but its colors are inverted compared to the Kingdom Key. In Kingdom Hearts coded, he uses the Star Seeker, the Keyblade he used in his days as an apprentice under Yen Sid.

Sora's best friend and rival, he wields the Way to the Dawn Keyblade, though in Kingdom Hearts he briefly took possession of Sora's Kingdom Key. In Kingdom Hearts, he stayed behind with King Mickey in the Realm of Darkness. In Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, he explores the basement of Castle Oblivion and struggles in resisting the darkness in his heart, Ansem, Seeker of Darkness, while in Kingdom Hearts II, he helped Sora defeat Xemnas. In Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories and Kingdom Hearts, he used the Soul Eater as his main weapon until he received the Way to the Dawn Keyblade.

Roxas
<gallery>
Sora's Nobody and the thirteenth member of Organization XIII, Roxas also possesses the ability to wield the Keyblade, an ability which Xemnas uses to his advantage by ordering Roxas to gather countless hearts to complete Kingdom Hearts itself. Upon the absorption by Roxas of his Replica, Xion, Roxas regains the ability to wield the two Keyblades, Oblivion and Oathkeeper, an ability passed onto Sora when Roxas fuses with him.

Xehanort
Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers (film)
The primary antagonist of the entire series. As his original persona, Master Xehanort, Xehanort is a Keyblade Master with plans to unleash the secrets of the Keyblade War onto the worlds and engulf the universe in darkness. To this end, he steals Terra's body by transferring his heart into the latter's body and becomes the new Xehanort, much younger and agile, combined with the ability to wield the Keyblade with both Master Xehanort's and Terra's powers. However, following confrontations with the Lingering Sentiment and Aqua, he loses his memories, except for his name, thus losing his ability to wield the Keyblade, as his Heartless, "Ansem", is shown using a double-ended version of Riku's Soul Eater, and his Nobody, Xemnas, uses Ethereal Blades in battle.
In the Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers (film) film, Chip and Dale stumble upon a vault of items belonged to kidnapped characters, one of the items being the Kingdom Key.

This article is about Keyblades in general.

—Sora to CLU, referring to the Keyblade
The Kingdom Key, the first Keyblade seen in the Kingdom Hearts series, is a Keyblade from the Realm of Light.

Keyblades (キーブレード Kīburēdo?) are mysterious weapons that are prominently featured in the Kingdom Hearts series. These weapons play an important role in the battle between darkness and light; they are wielded by many of the series' major characters, particularly its main protagonist, Sora.

Development[edit]

The original design for Sora and his blade.

According to an interview with Tetsuya Nomura, the Keyblade was originally planned to be a chainsaw-like weapon.[1]

Story[edit]

Creation[edit]

Human-made Keyblades choose their wielders upon creation,[2][3] but can also shift allegiances for various reasons.[4] The method for forging a regular Keyblade is not entirely clear,[?] although several newly-forged Keyblades do appear in the series. Riku's Keyblade, the Way to the Dawn, was able to manifest by using his Soul Eater as an intermediary,[5] while Data-Sora's strength of heart allowed him to create a true Keyblade after his artificial, digital Keyblade was destroyed by Maleficent.[6] However, those who gain a Keyblade may have some trouble with being able to call upon their weapon consistently;[7] this can be remedied with training. Kingdom Hearts III Others like Sora are able to call on the Keyblade immediately after receiving it. Kingdom Hearts

Early history[edit]

The Keyblade Graveyard.

In truth, however, the first known Keyblades were created by the Master of Masters, who was capable of extracting them from the hearts of people using his knowledge of the χ-blade, rather than forging them.[8] The conflict embroiled even those who did not desire Kingdom Hearts and took the lives of thousands; it also extinguished the light from the world and trapped Kingdom Hearts in the deepest darkness while the χ-blade shattered into twenty pieces: seven lights and thirteen darknesses.

Before Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep[edit]

Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep[edit]

Xehanort briefly reclaimed the use of his Keyblade, using it to turn himself and the rest of the apprentices into Nobodies.

Kingdom Hearts[edit]

Sora's Keyblade seals a Keyhole.

When the worlds first start to disappear, King Mickey realizes that Kingdom Hearts was going to be opened, and went to the Realm of Darkness to find its Keyblade, with which he could seal the door. However, he would also need someone to use a Keyblade from the Realm of Light in concert with him, so he left a letter for Donald Duck and Goofy, asking them to find the chosen wielder of that Keyblade and assist him in saving the worlds.[9] When the Heartless invade Destiny Islands, Sora rushes to the small island to save his friends, but finds that Kairi and Riku have already been swallowed by darkness. At this point, the Keyblade Terra had bequeathed Riku finally appears on the island, but because Riku has already given himself to darkness, Sora becomes its wielder instead. When Sora first arrives at the Traverse Town, he meets Leon, who gives him shelter and some insight about the Keyblade and Heartless. Yuffie and Leon have to get Sora off the Keyblade to "conceal [Sora's] heart" because the Heartless fear the Keyblade and will stop at nothing to eliminate its wielder.

In Atlantica, King Triton is enraged when he finds out that Sora is the key bearer and he tells him that as a key bearer, one must not meddle in the affairs of another world and that Sora had violated the principle. He declares that the Keyblade and its wielder can only shatter peace and bring ruin.

Sora uses this Keyblade to seal the Keyholes of the worlds he visits, but when he arrives at Hollow Bastion, Riku reveals that the Keyblade was intended for him, and he takes it back as Sora's heart falters. However, Sora soon confronts Riku again, and the strength of his heart proves greater than Riku's, allowing him to reclaim the Keyblade.

The Kingdom Key D Keyblade
The Kingdom Key D is a Keyblade from the Realm of Darkness.

Confused and angry, Riku runs off and is found by Ansem, who convinces Riku to allow Ansem to possess his body in exchange for more power. While possessing Riku, Ansem summons the Keyblade of heart, created from the collected hearts of the Princesses of Heart, in order to unlock the Final Keyhole. However, both the Keyblade and the Keyhole remain incomplete due to the disappearance of Kairi's heart. When Sora tracks down the possessed Riku and confronts him, Ansem reveals that Kairi's heart is in fact within Sora, and he attacks him in order to take it. But despite Sora defeating him, in order to restore Kairi's heart and fully seal the Final Keyhole, he uses the Keyblade of heart on himself. This completes the Keyhole and restores all of the Princess's hearts, but Sora becomes a Heartless, until he is restored to his body by Kairi's light.

Later on, after Sora, Donald, and Goofy defeat Ansem and attempt to close the door to Kingdom Hearts, King Mickey finally appears with the Kingdom Key D, a Keyblade of the Realm of Darkness. With their help, as well as that of the restored Riku, they close the door, saving the worlds from the imminent flood of darkness.

Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories[edit]

Since Sora retained his memories and feelings as a Heartless, something only one other person had done, Axel becomes particularly interested in why the Keyblade chose Sora as its wielder. Tired of Xemnas's rule, Marluxia conspires with Larxene to use Naminé to rewrite Sora's memories so they can use his Keyblade's power to overthrow the Organization.

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days[edit]

Roxas holding two Keyblades.

As Sora's Nobody, Roxas can use his Keyblade. Marluxia and Zexion explain the importance the Keyblade plays in slaying Emblem Heartless, which is to collect their hearts to create a Kingdom Hearts of their own. In addition, Xion is created by Xemnas to ensure there will be a Keyblade wielder loyal to the Organization.

Xion initially siphoned Ventus's Keyblade from Roxas in the form of a copy of Sora's Keyblade. However, she briefly lost it after Roxas woke from his coma. He lent her his Keyblade during a mission, allowing her to reestablish a link to Ventus's heart and regain his Keyblade.

Following Xion's destruction, Roxas awakens the ability to wield two Keyblades. Both Keyblades initially appear as copies of Sora's Kingdom Key, before transforming into the new forms of Oathkeeper and Oblivion.

Kingdom Hearts II[edit]

Kairi's Keyblade.

Sora, Riku, Kairi, Roxas, and King Mickey can use the Keyblade. Sora uses the Keyblade to open new paths to new worlds through Gates. At the end of the Battle of 1000 Heartless, Axel reveals to Sora that every Heartless he slays with the Keyblade releases a captive heart that Organization XIII uses to complete their synthetic Kingdom Hearts. Though Sora is reluctant to use the Keyblade upon learning this information, he ultimately resolves to keep fighting in order to protect those threatened by the Heartless. While King Mickey comes out occasionally to assist Sora, Riku obtains his own Keyblade, Way to the Dawn, at some point before reuniting with Sora and Kairi in The World That Never Was. During the Heartless surge in the Castle That Never Was, Kairi obtains the Destiny's Embrace from Riku.

In the datascape, Data-Sora wields a digital Keyblade to fix the source of Bug Blox and to seal the data Keyholes. This digital Keyblade is destroyed by Maleficent in Agrabah, but the strength of Data-Sora's heart enables him to summon a genuine Keyblade in Hollow Bastion.

King Mickey also uses his own Keyblade to defeat the Heartless that attack his castle.

Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance[edit]

Sora and Riku take the Mark of Mastery exam to become true Keyblade Masters. However, Riku doubts his own ability to wield a Keyblade, as he believes that the darkness still has a hold of him and uses the exam to test his worth as a Keyblade wielder. During his exam, Sora is constantly being tracked by Organization XIII through the Recusant's Sigil on his shirt. After defeating Xemnas, Sora has been heavily worn down after diving so far into the dream world. He is captured by Young Xehanort and taken to Where Nothing Gathers. When Riku attempts to save Sora, Young Xehanort tries to stop Riku. Mickey stops Xehanort with a Stopza, but Master Xehanort's consciousness allows him to move in the space. Young Xehanort then summons an unfamiliar Keyblade to do battle with Riku. Riku emerges victorious and Young Xehanort's Keyblade is never seen afterwards.

Upon his materialization, Master Xehanort reveals his intention to clash seven lights and thirteen darkness to forge a χ-blade. He also reveals that it was his intentions to gather the Princesses of Heart to fulfill his old intentions. After discussing his ideals with the new Organization, he attempts to use his Keyblade, No Name, to make Sora his thirteenth vessel. He is stopped by Lea and all of the members of the Organization are forced to return to their respective places in time. Riku dives into Sora's heart using the power of waking, and fights against an Armored Ventus Nightmare, who wields the Kingdom Key in a similar fashion to Ventus's fighting style. After Riku wakes up Sora and returns to the real world, Yen Sid declares that Riku has passed the exam, but due to what has transpired, Sora does not attain the rank of master. It is later revealed that Lea has become a Keyblade wielder, as well.

Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A Fragmentary passage-[edit]

Aqua uses the Master's Defender Keyblade to protect herself from the hordes of Heartless while exploring Dark Realm. She comes across King Mickey, who was looking for the Kingdom Key D Keyblade to close the Door to Darkness. Aqua fights the Demon Tide to save Riku, forcing her to stay on the darkness side of the door. Once Sora saves the worlds, Aqua remains in the Realm of Darkness, though Master's Defender is returned alongside Destiny Islands.

Kingdom Hearts III[edit]

Keyblade wielders[edit]

Roxas from the Ultimania
Roxas often uses Synch Blade to manifest his Oathkeeper and Oblivion.
"Well, you'll find they're picky about their owners."
—Terra to Braig

The Keyblade only lets a chosen wielder hold it, but those with the strength of heart to wield a Keyblade are able to give or take them from others, or take control of them if they have been abandoned. Those incapable of wielding a Keyblade cannot keep it, even if a wielder hands it to them. A wielder is able to summon or dispel their Keyblades at will. In Kingdom Hearts, the Keyblade disappears until Sora starts attacking, while in Kingdom Hearts II and Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep, it reappears as soon as the player approaches an enemy. In Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, the Keyblade appears when Roxas takes damage or begins attacking. In the manga, Sora keeps his Keyblade behind him, strapped to his belt.

However, it is implied that one can only wield a single Keyblade at a time, even if they have possession of more than one. The exceptions to this rule are Sora and Roxas, who can wield two Keyblades at once and channel both their abilities, due to Sora harboring Ventus's heart.[10] It is also possible for a wielder at the level of a Master to choose someone of a strong enough heart as their successor. This is often done through the Bequeathing, but can also be performed informally when the wielder lets a candidate touch their Keyblade, or if their hearts link together.

When some wielders summon their Keyblades, they are accompanied by visual effects specific to the user.

Powers[edit]

"The Keyblade. A truly marvelous weapon... were it only in more capable hands."
—Xemnas during Sora's first visit to Hollow Bastion in Kingdom Hearts II

Mickey retrieves the Kingdom Key D and prepares to close the Door to Darkness.

The Keyblade's signature ability is the power to open or close any lock or door,[11] be it to a physical object, to the heart of a person or world, or to a gate or pathway between worlds. For objects like treasure chests, this merely requires tapping the chest, while for more magical locks, the Keyblade generally operates by emitting a bright, thin beam of light from its tip, or by being thrust directly into the keyhole or person's chest. Tia Dalma implies they can also reverse curses and spells that trap others in different forms; she asked Sora to release her from her mortal form, over trying to persuade the Brethren Court.

They can also be used to travel to other worlds. Keyblade wielders can summon portals of pure light, which allow them to travel to different worlds.

In combat, Keyblades are wielded in the same way as swords, with the specific style varying with the wielder. Despite many Keyblades' apparent frailty or lack of a cutting edge, Keyblades are able to serve as both excellent blunt weapons and supernaturally precise cutting tools seemingly directed by the wielder's intent. Keyblades are especially effective against creatures connected to hearts or darkness, including the Heartless,[12] Nobodies, Unversed and Dream Eaters.

Keyblades can also be used to channel the powers of light or darkness.[citation needed]

A trained Keyblade wielder can also Formchange their Keyblade, changing its size and shape. This can be used to augment its use as a weapon, or to transform the Keyblade into a vehicle form, known as a "Keyblade Glider".

A Keyblade wielder can attach a Keychain or Gear to their Keyblade to transform it into a particular form, affecting both its design and abilities. Equipping a Keychain also changes the effect generated when the Keyblade is summoned; this effect is generally based on the Keychain's symbolism.

Design[edit]

All Keyblades share the same fundamental features, modeled after a key: a guard with a handle, a hilt, and a head at the end of the shaft that resembles the teeth of a skeleton key, with the exception of the Fenrir and Braveheart, which are instead modeled after a pin tumbler lock key.

Other appearances[edit]

Marvel Heroes[edit]

"A heart, a heart, my kingdom for a heart."
—Deadpool

In the MMORPG Marvel Heroes, Deadpool can wield a series of weapons named "Keyblades". However, they do not physically resemble those of the Kingdom Hearts series.

The in-game description of the Keyblades is a reference to William Shakespeare's Richard III, as well as a pun on the Kingdom Hearts series.

Disney Infinity 3.0[edit]

In Disney Infinity 3.0, if players purchase and scan every figure available for that version of the game, they can unlock Sora's Keyblade, which is the strongest collectible weapon in the game.[13]

Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers (film)[edit]

In the Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers film, Chip and Dale stumble upon a vault of items belonged to kidnapped characters, one of the items being the Kingdom Key.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

Sora wields the Kingdom Key in the game. In Sora's reveal trailer, the Keyblade is cloaked in flames as the last ember of the Smash logo, and Mario grabs the Kingdom Key to summon Sora. Kirby can copy Sora's neutral special by inhaling him, but is only able to conjure a translucent illusion of the Kingdom Key to cast spells.

Dragon Ball Heroes[edit]

The Key Sword (キーソード Kī Sōdo?) is a weapon that appears in the manga, anime, and game adaptions of Dragon Ball Heroes. Originally created to seal the Demon Realm, Xeno Trunks uses it to combat the Dark Empire. Its name, design, and function are references to the Keyblade.

 3. ^ Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, Terra: "Well, you'll find they're picky about their owners."
 4. ^ Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, Young Xehanort: "Yes. The boy chosen by the Keyblade—Riku. It was yours first, wasn't it? But you succumbed to the darkness you could not control, and your prize—the Keyblade—passed on to Sora instead."
 5. ^ Kingdom Hearts II Ultimania, Interviewer: "We found out that Riku's Keyblade's name is 'Way to the Dawn' when examining his item slots after he joined your party. Is that Keyblade a transfigured version of Soul Eater?" / Tetsuya Nomura: "I designed it with that image. Since Riku has always been using Soul Eater, he still calls it that even after it changed form. Keyblades aren't something that you can obtain suddenly out of nowhere, so in Riku's case, his Soul Eater was used as an intermediary for that Keyblade." Translation via Maiki.
 6. ^ Kingdom Hearts Re:coded Ultimania, Interviewer: "Data-Sora can newly obtain a legitimate Keyblade during his adventure, but are there changes to the real Keyblade when that happens?" / Tetsuya Nomura: "No, it’s a data version the entire time. However, like with the first Keyblade, it wasn’t created by someone else. It comes from the heart’s connections with the data, hinting towards the story theme, 'Can a heart be born in an existence made of data?'" Translation via Olivia.
 7. ^ Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, Lea: "You know, I was gonna come swooping in, Keyblade in hand! But I just couldn't get mine to materialize. Must be in the snap of the wrist or something. Oh."
 8. ^ Weekly Famitsu, pg. 198; Tetsuya Nomura: "The Master knows about its existence. Using the χ-blade as a model, he creates his own Keyblades. Well, by create I don't mean that in the physical sense, such as forging and tempering them, I mean more along the lines of pulling one out from the depths of a heart." Translation via Saken and Goldpanner.
 9. ^ Kingdom Hearts, Mickey's Letter: "There's someone with a "key"—the key to our survival. So I need you and Goofy to find him, and stick with him. Got it?"
 10. ^ Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Ultimania, p. 617; Interviewer: "Why can Roxas dual-wield?" / Tetsuya Nomura: "Sora can wield two Keyblades at once because he has Ventus's as well as his own. As Roxas is a part of Sora, he also can use two. In Days, Roxas awakened his ability to dual wield after fighting Xion. In KHII, once Sora absorbs him, he can also dual-wield." Translation via Lissar.
