Lock, Shock, and Barrel are Oogie Boogie's costumed henchmen. They are a trio of children in Halloween garbs of a devil, witch, and skeleton, respectively. They are known as Halloween's best trick or treaters, despite occasionally working for Oogie Boogie as his minions.

Story[edit]

Kingdom Hearts[edit]

Hiding in a coffin in the Graveyard, the trio overhear Jack Skellington's plan to create a heart to control the Heartless and decide to report their findings to Oogie Boogie. They proceed back to Oogie's Manor, where they tell him about the heart and tremble in fear as the bag of bugs laughs at the idea of getting a heart to command the Heartless. They break into Dr. Finkelstein's lab and steal the heart, retreating back to their Evil Playroom at the Manor. After sending the heart to Oogie via a chute, the trio engage Jack and Sora's group in a fight, but are beaten. After pinning the blame on Barrel for the idea of telling Oogie, the trio give hints where to find the Torture Chamber where Oogie is found.

They flee before Oogie fuses with the Manor. Following the destruction of their hideout, the trio are watched by the Mayor to ensure they do not cause any more trouble.

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days[edit]

During Roxas's missions in Halloween Town, Lock, Shock, and Barrel often sneak up behind him and yell "Trick or Treat!", then throw a pumpkin bomb in his face when he turns around before running off laughing. Eventually fed up with this, Roxas dodges one of the pumpkin bombs and engages in a fight with the trio. When he asks them why they keep interfering with him, they say it is because pulling pranks is fun, then hit him with another pumpkin bomb to the face.

Around the first time they meet Roxas, Barrel finds the seed of the Leechgrave Heartless and decides to keep it as a pet. However, soon after they plant it in the Manor Ruins, it begins growing out of control and sprouting Tentaclaws to eat other Heartless. Eventually, Lock, Shock, and Barrel are forced to flee to safety, and they are noticed as they pass Curly Hill by Roxas, who is on a mission to restore the Heartless population of Halloween Town. Shock scolds Barrel for being stupid enough to have picked up the Leechgrave's seed, while he protests he did not know it would grow.

Kingdom Hearts II[edit]

Since the defeat of Oogie, the trio have been hired by Dr. Finkelstein as his assistants. Upon their request for a minion of their own to boss around, the doctor decides to create an artificial Heartless to serve them. The trio are carrying back what would be its torso to the operating table when Sora, Donald, and Goofy return. However, because of how heavy it is, they decide to just toss it on the table. This damages the parts, causing them to crackle and explode. Furious, the doctor yells at them, prompting Lock, Shock, and Barrel to flee.

While riding their walking bathtub out of town, they begin plotting how to pull another prank. They are stopped by Maleficent, who Shock identifies as a witch. Seeing potential in them, Maleficent takes them to Christmas Town to cause mischief. However, because Jack brought Sora's group to be bodyguards for Santa, Maleficent disappears and the trio promptly flee back to Curly Hill. Once Maleficent informs them of her intention to get revenge on Sora and co., they think of how Oogie could have done the same and remind her of his demise the previous year. Maleficent uses the power of darkness to revive Oogie, but he is still weakened from revival. Maleficent takes Oogie away to destroy Christmas Town, leaving the Prison Keeper behind to assist the trio in stalling Sora's group. Each of them takes a turn powering the Heartless, but eventually they all board it and cause it to attack randomly. After the Heartless is slain, the trio laugh at the fun they had and unwittingly reveal Oogie is back before running off.

Some time later, the Experiment is brought to life, unknown to the trio. They are later found in the present packaging room of Santa's house, and accused of stealing presents from there. After being captured, the trio explain the doctor was making them a minion. They were just looking for parts, but nothing in Christmas Town was spooky enough for them. After the Experiment is destroyed, the trio can be found on Yuletide Hill with the Mayor.

Designs[edit]

All three children wear Halloween costumes with masks. A peculiarity to note is that the hands of the children appear to be different colors than the facial skin underneath and otherwise concealed by their masks. Whether or not they are wearing gloves is unknown.

Lock is dressed as a devil, wearing a plain, long-sleeved, tattered red shirt, and pants of the same color. His brown shoes have pointed toes that curl upward, and he seems to wear pale orange gloves. His skin is an unhealthy grey color, his eyes are an eerie yellow and his lips are sky blue. His upper eyelids are a pink color, while the lower one is periwinkle. His chin is rather large and the top of his head is quite flat. His ears are set rather low on his head, and his eyebrows are the same shade of red as his clothes, while the rest of his hair is a darker red-brown color. He styles his hair in such a way that he has two "horns" in the front. His nose is pointed, but not nearly as large as Shock's. His mask is a faded red devil's face with horns that curve upward much more than Lock's hair. The mask's mouth is curled into a ghastly smile, showing sharp teeth. Lock's outfit is completed by a red, pointed tail, though it is unclear whether or not this is an accessory.

Shock, the only girl of the group, is the tallest, being only slightly taller than Lock, as well as the thinnest. She is dressed as a witch, wearing a purple witch's hat that is about the same height (perhaps even taller) than her. Her hair is wiry and blue, the same color as the makeup she wears around her eyes. She also seems wear sky blue lipstick (though both Barrel and Lock have lips of the same color, so this may be her normal lip color) and has deathly grey skin, the latter being a trait all three children share. Her face and neck are quite long and her nose is enormous and pointed, taking up most of her face. Shock's mask is a plain grey-green one that sports the same large nose as her own face, and its mouth is set in a deep frown. She wears a pink dress with a dark purple hem, as well as black boots and dark purple gloves.

Barrel is the shortest and most rotund of the trio, sporting the same pale grey skin and blue lips as his friends. His head is spherical and he has short, pale green hair. His nose is very small when compared to Lock and Shock's, and it is upturned. His eyes are quite close together and appear to be sunken in, though this could just be an illusion created by the dark makeup around them. Barrel dresses up like a skeleton, wearing tattered purple pants and a like-colored shirt. Both of these pieces of clothing are decorated with bones roughly corresponding to their locations in the human body. Unlike his friends, Barrel doesn't seem to wear gloves, but his feet are oddly shaped, with three toes of the same length. It isn't clear if they are part of his costume or his real feet. His mask is that of a skull; a simple, round, white mask with the mouth being bare teeth set in a wide grin, reflecting the fact that Barrel himself is usually grinning.

Personalities[edit]

All three of the kids are mischievous, rude and rascally children with no respect for their superiors, taking pride by wreaking havoc and chaos whenever they can. Although they take orders from Oogie Boogie, they obey him out of fear, and are generally content to merely perform pranks unless threatened by him. Although Lock is the nominal ringleader, Shock's cunning and bossiness usually put her in charge. When they get in trouble, both of them are happy to throw the hapless Barrel under the bus and blame all their misdeeds on him.

Origin[edit]

Lock, Shock, and Barrel originally appeared in the 1993 movie The Nightmare Before Christmas, with Lock voiced by the late Paul Reubens, Shock by Catherine O'Hara, and Barrel by composer Danny Elfman. In the movie, Jack, in his mission to take over Christmas, orders Lock, Shock, and Barrel to kidnap Santa Claus. When the trio manages to do that, they bring Santa to Jack. Jack tells the three to take Santa to their lair, but they don't listen to him and bring Santa to Oogie Boogie's lair. Shortly after Jack defeats Oogie Boogie and saves Santa, the trio arrives at Oogie's lair together with the Mayor, whom they have led to the place.

Their names as a whole is derived from wordplay of the phrase "Lock, stock, and barrel," a merism meaning "everything", which, in turn, was derived from the components of a musket.
