"Identify. State your handle, program."
—A Black Guard to Sora

The Black Guards are enemies that appear in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. These characters originated in the Disney film Tron: Legacy. They are vicious computer programs that were reprogrammed by CLU to serve as his main enforcers, so they demonstrate no individuality or emotion beyond following CLU's orders. They appear throughout The Grid as generic enemies.

Story

Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance

Sora encounters four Guards after chasing a Recognizer. They demand that he state his handle, but Sora does not understand what they meant and introduces himself. However, Sora's name is not recognized as a handle, and he is categorized as a stray program. The guards grab him and pull him towards the Recognizer, but Sora breaks free and escapes.

On Riku's side, some Guards find Riku and categorize him as a stray program. They begin to force him onto the Recognizer, but he brushes them off and boards willingly. When Riku is forced by CLU to participate in the Light Cycle races, the Guards attack him, but they are easily defeated.

Appearance

The Black Guards wear black, skintight suits lined with circuitry, and uniform, featureless helmets. The orange hue of their circuits indicates that they serve CLU. They are also equipped with batons which they carry on their arms and are used to expand their armament with various additional weapons such as a sword, or staff, their backs can sprout Tron chutes to allow flight, and can carry grenades which they keep within their thighs.

Personality

Black Guard members do not express much emotion or personality, instead dutifully following any and all orders given to them by CLU, including the extermination of the ISOs and the brutal capture of stray programs, as they did with Sora and Riku.

Origin

The Black Guards debuted in Tron: Legacy. Like Tron, they were all reprogrammed to serve as CLU's army and henchmen, but they can act like normal programs when not on duty, as several guards are seen relaxing in the End of Line club. Many appeared on the Rectifier during CLU's speech about invading the userworld to perfect it. Flynn managed to reprogram one (by tampering with his Identity Disk, then hitting him in the head) to allow him to steal a Fighter Jet. It's unknown what happened to the Black Guards following the destruction of the Portal and CLU.

Strategy

Attacks
  • Stick Bash Attack (スティック打撃攻撃 Sutikku Dageki Kōgeki?)
  • Grenade (グレネード Gurenēdo?)
  • Disc Chute (ディスクシュート Disuku Shūto?)

Black Guards frequently appear in pairs. They drop down suddenly out of nowhere, but if the player can quickly find them, there is a short pause before they can use any of their abilities. The guards cycle between an air mode and a ground mode. In the ground mode, they attack with their staves and by throwing bombs. In the air mode, they sprout Tron chutes and take to the sky.
