Both versions of the song contain reversed lyrics, sung by Utada. The reversed lyrics are in English in both versions. They include; "My heart's a battleground" which is played in English even in the Japanese version of the song. The reversed portion of the songs are "I need more affection than you know"; in the "battleground" section, "So many ups and downs" and "I need true emotions" are the two other examples of the reversed lyrics.
"{{w|Passion (Utada Hikaru song)|Passion}}" was originally released on Utada's ''{{w|Ultra Blue}}'' album and reached #2 in the Oricon Singles Chart in 2006. "Sanctuary (Opening)" was first released on the album ''{{w|This Is the One}}'' as a bonus track.

"Sanctuary" and its Japanese counterpart "Passion" are a pair of songs written and sung by Utada Hikaru. They are main themes of the Kingdom Hearts series.

There are two main variations of the pieces: "Sanctuary -opening version-"[1] and "Passion -opening version-", which are the original versions of the songs, and the softer "Sanctuary -after the battle-"[2] and "Passion -after the battle-".[3]

An instrumental arrangement of the piece titled "Passion -KINGDOM Orchestra Instrumental Version-"[4] was introduced in Kingdom Hearts II, arranged by Kaoru Wada and performed by the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra.

A third vocal version of the piece, titled "Passion ~single version~", was released by Utada. It is an extended arrangement with additional lyrics. This variation has never been featured in a Kingdom Hearts game, although it was distributed with Kingdom Hearts songs on Square Enix Melody and included on the YouTube version of the Kingdom Hearts Official Playlist.

Composition[edit]

"Passion" was originally released on Utada's Ultra Blue album and reached #2 in the Oricon Singles Chart in 2006. "Sanctuary (Opening)" was first released on the album This Is the One as a bonus track.

In both languages, the song contains reversed lyrics, sung by Utada. The reversed lyrics are in English in both versions. They include "My heart's a battleground", "I need more affection than you know", "So many ups and downs", and "I need true emotions".

"Sanctuary (Ending)" and "Passion -after the battle" are very similar to the original versions. These arrangements are much quieter for most of the song until the ending, which uses a faster instrumental than the rest of the song.

Lyrics[edit]

In you and I there's a new land
Angels in flight
A sanctuary, my sanctuary, yeah
Where fears and lies melt away
Music will tie
What's left of me, what's left of me now
I watch you fast asleep
All I fear means nothing
In you and I there's a new land
Angels in flight
A sanctuary, my sanctuary, yeah
Where fears and lies melt away
Music will tie
What's left of me, what's left of me
So many ups and downs
My heart's a battleground
You show me how to see that nothing is whole and
nothing is broken
In you and I there's a new land
Angels in flight
A sanctuary, my sanctuary, yeah
Where fears and lies melt away
Music will tie
What's left of me, what's left of me now
My heart's a battleground
二度と会えぬ人に場所に
窓を開ける
思い出せば遥か遥か
未来はどこまでも輝いてた
きれいな青空の下で
僕らはいつまでも眠っていた
Omoidaseba haruka haruka
Mirai wa doko made mo kagayai teta
Kireina aozora no shita de

When I remember far far back
The future was bright for as far as I can see
Underneath the beautiful blue sky
We were a little afraid
The windows are becoming stained with a nostalgic color
If I face forward will I meet you again?
The future continues on and on
Underneath a large signboard
I want to watch as the times change
Hidden
My heart's a battleground
I open the window
To those people and places I can never go to
When I remember far far back
The future was bright for as far as I can see
Underneath the beautiful blue sky
We would keep sleeping
思い出せば遥か遥か

僕らはいつまでも眠っていた
ずっと前に好きだった人

The rules from the old days

Is the New Year's card with a photo?
What we couldn't do
I miss you very much
