The Counterpoint is a Keychain for Sora's, Riku's, and Player's Keyblades that appears in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance and Kingdom Hearts Union χ.
Design[edit]
The Counterpoint's design varies depending on its upgrades, most of which are only seen in Kingdom Hearts Union χ.
The default Counterpoint has a dull bronze guard, which is modeled after a member of the violin family. The blade is a slightly stylized line of music, colored in light green with two golden eighth notes. The teeth are composed of a treble clef with a light green color scheme that fades to indigo, and is topped with a small version of Yen Sid's hat that culminates into a four-pointed star. The Keychain is comprised of silver stars, with the token being a lime-green to blue stylized eighth note and a silver star.
The first upgrade, also seen in Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance, has a more defined bronze guard. The blade is slightly curved, has three eighth notes instead of two, and is now a deep blue that fades to cyan, with its base being a semicircle with a golden star in its center. The treble clef fades from lilac to yellow, and the star on the hat is now a larger, five-pointed star. The Keychain's links are silver and golden, while the token is purple fading to yellow. Like all Keyblades in Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance, this version adopts a dark grey color scheme with light blue accents while in The Grid.
The second upgrade's guard is indigo with more starry features, much like the Star Seeker. The blade is straightened out and bright yellow, the star near the hilt is replaced by a crescent, and the notes are colored red, purple, and sky blue. The treble clef ranges from blue to magenta, Yen Sid's hat has one of its stars replaced with a crescent, and the hat's star is now a crescent moon surrounded by sun rays. The Keychain is composed of purple stars and a yellow crescent, while its token's color fades from blue to magenta, replaces the star on the center with a crescent, and adds three yellow spikes on each side of the token.
The third upgrade animates the treble clef to cycle through all the colors of the rainbow and cloaks the Keyblade in a pink aura, with multicolored lens flares periodically appearing along its entire length, and tiny multicolored eighth notes floating around the blade, appearing from the hilt and fading away near the tip of the Keyblade.
The Keyblade's English name references a counterpoint, the relationship between voices that sound different individually but are harmonious when played together. The Japanese name alludes to the Sound Ideas found in the Symphony of Sorcery.
