Story
Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep
Terra, Ventus, and Aqua return on separate occasions to the Badlands, where they find a mysterious sphere of dark energy hovering in front of a nearby rock formation. The Keyblade wielders accept the challenge the energy sphere offers, and the Vanitas Remnant takes shape before them, just like when the real Vanitas did when he was born. The Unversed attacks, and after its defeat, it disappears back into the darkness.

Vanitas's Lingering Spirit, true to its name, is a palette swap of Vanitas with his helmet on. Its smooth helmet is completely black with an Unversed insignia emblazoned on it. Its torso and legs are covered by a black bodysuit with nearly glowing white highlights on the chest. The material over its arms shifts in color from black to grey to white, before shifting to black again on the palms of its hands. Its boots are white with black soles. It also wears a white skirt-like garment with black tips around its waist, held up by several grey straps.
The Vanitas Remnant is a black-and-white version of the real Vanitas. It wears a black and white bodysuit, white boots with black soles, a white half-skirt that has torn, black tips and is held in place by three grey straps, and a smooth, black helmet that bears the Unversed insignia. It wields a monochrome version of Vanitas's Void Gear.

Before attacking Terra, Ventus, or Aqua, its battle must first be accessed by interacting with a dark portal with a picture of the charm found on the end of the Keychain to the Void Gear, similar to encountering an Absent Silhouette. After entering the portal, Vanitas's Lingering Spirit forms from a sphere of dark energy, similarly to Vanitas's creation.
The portal from which the Vanitas Remnant emerges from is purple in coloration and has fragments of black rocklike material floating around it. The symbol that appears in the portal's center resembles the Keychain of the Void Gear Keyblade.

Strategy
Strategy
Vanitas's Lingering Spirit uses a skillset similar to the true Vanitas, but with more powerful versions of Vanitas's attacks and the ability to heal itself whenever the player tries to do the same, excluding healing by Potions. Each of these tactics has the potential to instantly drop the player's HP into the "Alarm Zone", thus the boss should be approached with caution. It also has some attacks that Vanitas could only perform with the χ-blade, both complete and incomplete.

Terra, Ventus, and Aqua cannot use D-Links against the Vanitas Remnant. However, they still have access to Command Styles and Shotlocks. While the Vanitas Remnant will avoid most of the damage Shotlocks cause, the brief invulnerability these techniques grant makes them useful for enduring the boss's attacks. For maximum efficiency, the protagonists' equipped Shotlocks should be at their highest levels.

For the most part, Vanitas's Lingering Spirit will start the battle by surrounding itself in a dark ball of energy and sending multiple shadow versions of itself after the player. While these are extremely difficult to dodge, it is not impossible. Hiding behind a pillar may help, but not always. If one of these shadows hits the player, they will be temporarily blinded and left open to further attack, which will most likely finish the player off, as the first hit usually sends them into the alarm zone if lucky. A rather risky way of avoiding this is quickly hitting Vanitas's Lingering Spirit just before it can begin the attack, then dodging away before it begins a different attack. In it's standard moveset, it has two melee attacks: one where it will strike at the player and then send an arch of energy after them, which will follow the player for the next few seconds before fading out.
Depending on the approach to this battle the player wishes to take, their Keyblade of choice will vary. Keyblades with a high Strength stat are best used if one intends to fight the Vanitas Remnant using Aerial Slam. Magic-oriented Keyblades, meanwhile, are recommended if one plans to use Tornado or Seeker Mine.

Beware not to be hit by this, otherwise the player will be confused and very open to another attack. The second one involves the Lingering Spirit striking at the player once, striking the ground, creating a wave of energy in the form of an "X", then striking at the player again, and ending it by leaping into the air and firing an "X" shape of energy at the player, which is easily dodged. This last one will leave the Lingering Spirit open for a couple of hits, but the player must calculate their moves carefully or it can be costly. If the Lingering Spirit is struck one too many times, it will quickly retaliate with an ice-based attack which can defeat the player instantly.
Terra, Ventus, and Aqua should rely on the most basic forms of their respective dodging techniques when fighting the Vanitas Remnant, as their more offensive versions do not grant the same windows of invincibility. The protagonists should also use Potions or techniques such as Heal Strike, Renewal Block, and Renewal Barrier to recover HP, for Cure and Friend Cure spells allow the boss to also rejuvenate itself.

The rest of the Lingering Spirit's moves are not really that hard to dodge; the hard part is finding an opening to attack it. Occasionally but not very frequently, the Lingering Spirit will unleash other attacks like teleporting itself around the player and attacking. Depending on the player's level, this attack can be countered with a guard. Also, if you are a far distance away from the Lingering Spirit, it will teleport at a random interval, leaving an afterimage and perform a direct thrust at the player. Another attack is diving underneath the ground and following the player from below, suddenly bursting out and unleashing fireballs around itself. This can be dodged by quickly dodge rolling just when the Lingering Spirit's mark is underneath the player.
Terra
To compensate for his lack of speed and poor dodging ability, Terra should only use the fastest of attacks when facing the Vanitas Remnant. It is also recommended that he enter the battle against this foe with two sets of Potions, a high-level version of Mine Square or Mine Shield, all three available HP Boosts, and the Second Chance and Once More abilities equipped. To deal as much damage to the Vanitas Remnant as possible, Terra should use the Chaos Ripper Keyblade, as well as the Demolition Finish command.

Another attack is just firing a fireball at the player which will explode into several smaller balls and home in on the player, much like the original Vanitas's attack, only the fireballs will follow the player longer and will hurt more. Probably the easiest attack to dodge and then take advantage of is the Lingering Spirit's "Shotlock", indicated by several red dots appearing on the player and the Lingering Spirit firing a beam of energy. This beam can kill the player if not careful, but the player can use this time to work their way around the Lingering Spirit and strike it a few times before the attack ends. Another lethal but easy to dodge attack is when the Lingering Spirit dashes around in a circle and leave spikes of black energy which will suddenly join and instantly kill the player should they be in the wrong place.
When dealing with the Vanitas Remnant's Clone Burst attack, Terra should use Slide to avoid taking damage. He should not use Sonic Impact, as this technique lacks Slide's temporary invincibility. Terra can also use Keyblade strikes and fast-paced, long-range attacks like Thunder Surge to delay Clone Burst's execution. When the Vanitas Remnant uses Dark Fang, it is recommended that Terra use Slide to quickly reach the boss and then use Mine Shield or Mine Square; it is likely the Vanitas Remnant will walk into the mines and take damage in its attempt to continue attacking. If the Vanitas Remnant uses Dark Cannon, Terra can use Ars Solum to deal heavy damage. Alternatively, he can consume a Vanilla Glitz to gain early access to the Critical Impact Command Style; this will greatly increase the damage of his standard attacks, which can be used until the boss's Shotlock ends.

When playing as Terra, it is recommended that the player equip a deck solely with potions for healing, as using Cure spells will prompt the Lingering Spirit to heal itself as well, making the battle hard for the player, and since Terra is by far the strongest of the trio, especially with the Chaos Ripper, normal attacks will deal damage to the boss.
Ventus
When fighting the Vanitas Remnant, Ventus should use Dodge Roll to avoid taking damage. He can use Superglide to quickly dodge the boss's ranged attacks. It is recommended that Ventus have at least two sets of Potions equipped during this battle, as well as the Second Chance and Once More abilities. Tornado and Mine Square should be his main source of offense, and he should use Renewal Block to defend against the Vanitas Remnant while recovering much-needed HP.

As Ventus, the fight becomes much easier if the player has equipped a mastered Tornado (or even two), one of the very few Magic attacks able to do considerable damage to the Lingering Spirit (but is only available for Ventus). The only problem is finding the right moment to use it successfully. Using the Tornado on the Lingering Spirit twice and then striking it normally will end the battle quickly.
To avoid Dark Fang, Ventus should use Dodge Roll. The temporary invincibility the technique grants him will prevent him from being inflicted with Blind. Ventus's Stratosphere Finish command also bestows brief invulnerability; it should be used in place of Command Styles. Ventus's Tornado spell is most effective at the conclusion of the Vanitas Remnant's Dark Thundaga, Clone Burst, and X-Discharge attacks.

As Aqua, certain Magic attacks can do damage to the Lingering Spirit, such as Mine spells, but the only problem is the possibility of filling up Aqua's command gauge with Mine hits which will trigger an unwanted Command Style and leave Aqua open to a possibly fatal attack from the Lingering Spirit. Using the Hat Trick Ice Cream to get Aqua in the Spellweaver Command Style and using it's finisher twice will end the battle quickly. If the player is at a high level and is using a strong Keyblade, then the same strategy for Terra can be used.
Aqua
When Aqua faces the Vanitas Remnant, she should have Seeker Mine and all three available HP Boosts equipped. Her Keyblade of choice should either be the Stormfall or Ultima Weapon Keyblade, as both are proficient in Strength and Magic. To avoid the Vanitas Remnant's attacks, Aqua should chain multiple Cartwheels together.

It is also recommended that the player complete the "Villains' Vendetta" challenge in the Mirage Arena to obtain the Ultima Weapon Keyblade for the highest Attack and Magic boosts possible. Do not use Shotlocks, as they will have little to no effect and could even leave the player open to attack for even the slightest moment. If desperate, the Shotlock may be used to protect oneself from the Lingering Spirit's shadow attack, although it is very risky, as the end of the Shot Lock will leave the player vulnerable for a moment which could very well be when the Lingering Spirit strikes again, possibly fatally. Synthesizing and equipping Once More and Second Chance can help in sparing the player from the Lingering Spirit's unforeseen attacks.
Strategy 1
In addition to Seeker Mine, Aqua should have three sets of Potions and four sets of Fabracadabras equipped. After three quarters of the Vanitas Remnant's HP has been depleted, it is recommended that Aqua start using Fabracadabras to gain early access to the Spellweaver Command Style, which she can use until the boss is defeated. While not particularly powerful, Spellweaver grants Aqua invulnerability, has great range, and can hit multiple times.

Stick to this strategy and victory will be the player's. The trick is to keep a hit-and-run strategy. While the Lingering Spirit has only one life bar, it is important not to underestimate it, as the fight could take even longer than one against the Lingering Sentiment, so above all, patience is a must.
Strategy 2
A strategy that involves the consumption of fewer items relies on a combination of Seeker Mine and Teleport Spike as its main source of offense. Aqua should use this command until three quarters of the Vanitas Remnant's HP has been depleted. She should then use consecutive Counter Blasts to fill her Command Gauge until Teleport Spike becomes available. It is recommended that Aqua utilize this Finish command until the Vanitas Remnant is defeated to gain temporary invulnerability and the ability to strike multiple times.

The Vanitas Remnant, also called Vanitas's lingering spirit, is an Unversed that serves as a secret boss in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep. It can be fought in the Badlands area of the Keyblade Graveyard after the player clears the Final Episode. True to its name, it is a physical manifestation of the remnants of Vanitas's thoughts, feelings, and will.

Defeating the Vanitas Remnant in the Japanese version of Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep earns the player a Secret Gem. In the international version and Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Final Mix, defeating this boss unlocks the Void Gear and allows the Unknown to be challenged.[3]

Story[edit]

Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep[edit]

Terra, Ventus, and Aqua return on separate occasions to the Badlands, where they find a mysterious sphere of dark energy hovering in front of a nearby rock formation. The Keyblade wielders accept the challenge the energy sphere offers, and the Vanitas Remnant takes shape before them, just like when the real Vanitas did when he was born. The Unversed attacks, and after its defeat, it disappears back into the darkness.

Design[edit]

The Vanitas Remnant is a black-and-white version of the real Vanitas. It wears a black and white bodysuit, white boots with black soles, a white half-skirt that has torn, black tips and is held in place by three grey straps, and a smooth, black helmet that bears the Unversed insignia. It wields a monochrome version of Vanitas's Void Gear.

The portal from which the Vanitas Remnant emerges from is purple in coloration and has fragments of black rocklike material floating around it. The symbol that appears in the portal's center resembles the Keychain of the Void Gear Keyblade.

Strategy[edit]

Vanitas Remnant engaging in combat.
Vanitas Remnant engages in combat in the Keyblade Graveyard.

Terra[edit]

To compensate for his lack of speed and poor dodging ability, Terra should only use the fastest of attacks when facing the Vanitas Remnant. It is also recommended that he enter the battle against this foe with two sets of Potions, a high-level version of Mine Square or Mine Shield, all three available HP Boosts, and the Second Chance and Once More abilities equipped. To deal as much damage to the Vanitas Remnant as possible, Terra should use the Chaos Ripper Keyblade, as well as the Demolition Finish command.

Ventus[edit]

When fighting the Vanitas Remnant, Ventus should use Dodge Roll to avoid taking damage. He can use Superglide to quickly dodge the boss's ranged attacks. It is recommended that Ventus have at least two sets of Potions equipped during this battle, as well as the Second Chance and Once More abilities. Tornado and Mine Square should be his main source of offense, and he should use Renewal Block to defend against the Vanitas Remnant while recovering much-needed HP.

Aqua[edit]

When Aqua faces the Vanitas Remnant, she should have Seeker Mine and all three available HP Boosts equipped. Her Keyblade of choice should either be the Stormfall or Ultima Weapon Keyblade, as both are proficient in Strength and Magic. To avoid the Vanitas Remnant's attacks, Aqua should chain multiple Cartwheels together.

Strategy 1[edit]

After three quarters of the Vanitas Remnant's HP has been depleted, it is recommended that Aqua start using Fabracadabras to gain early access to the Spellweaver Command Style, which she can use until the boss is defeated. While not particularly powerful, Spellweaver grants Aqua invulnerability, has great range, and can hit multiple times.

Strategy 2[edit]

A strategy that involves the consumption of fewer items relies on a combination of Seeker Mine and Teleport Spike as its main source of offense. Aqua should use this command until three quarters of the Vanitas Remnant's HP has been depleted. She should then use consecutive Counter Blasts to fill her Command Gauge until Teleport Spike becomes available. It is recommended that Aqua utilize this Finish command until the Vanitas Remnant is defeated to gain temporary invulnerability and the ability to strike multiple times.

Terra, Ventus, and Aqua[edit]

A flaw in the Vanitas Remnant's A.I. allows for an easy victory against it. Simply lure the Vanitas Remnant to the large rock formation in the corner of the battlefield and retreat to the rock's opposite side. The Vanitas Remnant will be left unable to attack.
