Composition
"Spooks of Halloween Town" is approximately two minutes and fourteen seconds in Kingdom Hearts and the HD remake of Kingdom Hearts Final Mix. In Kingdom Hearts II the piece is shortened to one minute and twenty seconds. However, for the HD remake of Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, the piece is extended to two minutes and eighteen seconds. Regardless of the game, the piece has a time signature of 4/4, and a tempo of 158 beats per minute.
For instrumentation, each version uses the same instruments. However, for games not in the HD remakes, some voices are covered through electronic means- such as synthesizer. In general, the instrumentation includes: a complete strings section- violin, viola, cello, and stringed bass, flute, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, French horn, trombone, snare drum, marimba, crash cymbals, jingle stick, chimes, timpani, harp, piano, and synthesizer.
The naturally faster tempo than "This is Halloween" immediately sets the difference in tone between field and battle themes. "Spooks of Halloween Town" has a relatively simple melody and harmonies that are continuously exchanged throughout the instrument families. Much like Halloween Town's field theme, although the tonality suggests an eerie environment, a sense of playful excitement can also be felt due to the lighter rhythmic passages exchanged throughout the piece. For harmony, part of the ensemble maintains the "twilight" environment by its longer note passages, while the other half- namely, low voices- add a sense of urgency and intensity by playing heavily on the downbeats.
