La Cité des Cloches (Fra: "The City of Bells") is a Sleeping World that is featured in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. It is based on the Disney film, The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The world previously appeared, unnamed, in the non-canon comic El Cetro y el Reino.

Locations

The world's playable areas include inside and outside the Notre Dame cathedral itself, the streets of Paris, the Court of Miracles, the bridge leading to the River Seine and the Miller's land.

Story

Between Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep and Kingdom Hearts

Sometime after Terra-Xehanort's descent into darkness, his heartless, Ansem, Seeker of Darkness, attacked many worlds, including La Cité des Cloches, and swallowed them into the darkness. Though it was restored after Sora defeated Ansem and destroyed the End of the World, La Cité des Cloches remained in a state of deep sleep instead of returning to the Realm of Light, plagued by Nightmare Dream Eaters.

Sora

When Sora arrives, he walks past Claude Frollo, who thinks the boy to be a gypsy because of his strange clothes. Phoebus appears to bring bad news about monsters appearing in the Town Square. Sora overhears this and charges to the square, despite Phoebus's warnings. Frollo becomes angry with the news of the monsters, letting out some darkness from his body.

Sora soon reaches the square, where he encounters a deformed man on top of a Zou Elephant. The man, Quasimodo, is unawhere that he's in danger and refuses to leave because he has been crowned King of Fools. However, Frollo appears, distracting Quasimodo as the Dream Eater throws him off it's back. A gypsy named Esmeralda appears and escapes with Quasimodo back into Notre Dame, with Phoebus and Frollo watching them.

Sora defeats the Dream Eaters, then enters the church to see if Quasimodo is alright, finding him showing Esmeralda the bells, including his favorite, Big Marie. As this happens, three statues behind Sora come to life. Quasimodo convinces Esmeralda to stay with him forever, knowing that she will be safe if she does, but she refuses, because gypsies hate being trapped behind stone walls. Understanding, Quasimodo decides to help her escape, even though all the doors are being guarded, by grabbing her and jumping out the window.

The statues tell Sora that Quasimodo cannot leave the church by the orders of Frollo because of his appearance. When Laverne mentions her fear that Frollo will lock up Quasimodo's heart, Sora runs outside to speak with Quasimodo.

Sora confronts Phoebus outside, but Phoebus explains that he does not want to fight. Sora explains that Esmeralda went outside with Quasimodo, which is bad news because Frollo wants the gypsies exterminated. Phoebus himself has turned against Frollo after disagreeing with him, and mentions that Frollo knows where the gypsy hideout, the Court of Miracles, is located. Quasimodo overhears this and offers help with a pendant, which is the town map.

As soon as the trio reach the Court of Miracles, Frollo appears and kidnaps Esmeralda, announcing that he will burn her on the stake in the Town Square. Sora attempts to attack Frollo to free her, but he is knocked out by Frollo's darkness. When Sora wakes up, everyone is gone. He remembers what Frollo said and hurries towards the square. But by time Sora reaches the square, Esmeralda is already being burned. Quasimodo manages to save her by swinging down and pulling her out of the fire. Frollo, enraged, goes after him. Sora steps in his way, but a Bullet Gargoyle then appears and fights Sora while Frollo gets inside the cathedral.

As Quasimodo fights Frollo to defend the weakened Esmeralda, Frollo spitefully reveals that he was the one who killed Quasimodo's mother twenty years ago. He attempts to strike Quasimodo but the two fall off the balcony. Esmeralda catches Quasimodo's hand, but Frollo climbs up a gargoyle and prepares to kill them both when the gargoyle breaks and sends Frollo falling to his death. Esmeralda loses her grip on Quasimodo but he is saved by Phoebus. The three reunite and Quasimodo blesses Phoebus and Esmeralda's relationship.

Phoebus and Esmeralda prepare to go outside to celebrate their victory over Frollo, and Quasimodo follows after some encouragement by Sora. However, once alone, Sora encounters the young man and Vanitas, who tell him that he has made his heart into a prison, even if he himself is not the prisoner, before leaving. Though stunned, the world's keyhole appears and Sora seals it.

Riku

Phoebus chases Esmeralda towards a bunch of tents. However, Esmeralda soon disappears in pink smoke. She runs past Riku and into town. Phoebus asks Riku if he has seen any gypsies. Riku, unawhere that Esmeralda is one, explains that he has not. Phoebus tells Frollo that Esmeralda escaped, which further angers Frollo, who calls Phoebus "useless"

Esmeralda introduces herself to Riku, thanking him for saving her. Riku questions what a gypsy is and why Frollo and Phoebus are after her. Esmeralda explains that gypsies love freedom, but Frollo has organized a hunt for them all because they refuse to follow his "laws". Esmeralda also mentions Frollo's strong darkness, which interests Riku. She tells him that he can learn more at Notre Dame.

Riku enters the church and meets Quasimodo. Riku asks about Frollo, and Quasimodo explains that Frollo protects him from the outside world because of his deformed appearance. Riku explains that people should not judge people by appearance, but what is important is that their heart show them for who they really are. Riku convinces Quasimodo to go outside and make friends with whoever he meets. Quasimodo explains that he cannot, but Riku convinces him to listen to his heart. Riku then goes outside, saying that it's unlike him to say things like what he said to Quasimodo.

Riku reaches a bridge, where he encounters a Bullet Gargoyle. He attempts to fight it, but decides to flee for the time being.

Phoebus has drawn his sword on Frollo, refusing to let him burn down a house just because they were believed to be hiding gypsies. Soon, the Bullet Gargoyle and Riku appear. Frollo says that the Gargoyle is a judgement of God, thinking He gave him the power to exterminate the gypsies. Riku and Phoebus prepare to fight Frollo, but Frollo walks away calmly as the Gargoyle attacks Phoebus. Riku goes after the Gargoyle, which appears to be heading towards Notre Dame.

Riku meets up with Quasimodo, who had just saved Esmeralda from being burned at the stake, and prases him for following his heart. Inside, Riku meets the statues, seeing them take out a Meow Wow without his help. They soon dispatch more Dream Eaters as Riku runs towards the roof.

Riku reaches the top, only to see Frollo buring all of Paris. Riku prepares to battle him as the Bullet Gargoyle appears. Frollo falls into the inferno below, then "Ansem" and the young man appear to mock Riku, telling him he is afraid of the darkness, but Riku counters that he walks the path to dawn, and they leave. Riku then fights and defeats the Bullet Gargoyle, sending it falling into the inferno.

Riku then speaks with Quasimodo, Esmeralda and Phoebus about imprisoning hearts. He soon finds the Keyhole and seals it.

Other appearances

El Cetro y el Reino

In El Cetro y el Reino, Sora and Riku arrive at La Cité des Cloches by mistake while chasing the villain who had stolen the Disney Fairies' sceptre from Disney Castle, when Donald is unable to send them to their intended destination.

The two boys appear out of nowhere and fall on top of Judge Frollo, who accuses them of being witches. They flee from Frollo and are rescued by Esmeralda, who leads them to the Cathedral of Notre Dame where they meet Quasimodo. Finally, after asking how to find a door to their world, the gargoyle Laverne guides them towards their true destination.
