The Anti Black Coat is a Nightmare Dream Eater that appears in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. It is the physical manifestation of a nightmare that has trapped Sora.

Story

Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance

The Anti Black Coat appears when Riku tries to wake Sora from his deep sleep. It battles the Keyblade wielder and vanishes upon its defeat.

Design

As its name suggests, the Anti Black Coat wears a black coat. Its circular, red eyes are visible from underneath the coat's hood. A Nightmare Dream Eater emblem appears on the Anti Black Coat's back, and magenta flame designs decorate its sleeves and coattails.

Battle

Attacks

  • Wild Arcanum (ワイルドアルカナム Wairudo Arukanamu?): A six-hit melee combo.
  • Poison Arrow (ポイズンアロー Poizun Arō?): Launches a series of homing projectiles that inflict Poison when they make contact.
  • Scissor Bite (シザーバイト Shizā Baito?): Strikes vertically or horizontally with an "X"-shaped mass of red and black energy.
  • Shadow Steal (シャドウスティール Shadou Sutīru?): Knocks the target upwards with a dark red line racing through the ground and depletes the its HP to one the whole time it's airborne. Spirit Dream Eaters only take the former.

Strategy

Riku should maintain a hit-and-run strategy when fighting the Anti Black Coat. He can avoid a majority of the boss's attacks with well-timed Dodge Rolls. To damage the boss, he should rely on a combination of Flowmotion attacks, Balloon spells, and powerful commands like Icebreaker. Curaga is essential during this battle as well, for it can quickly replenish Riku's HP if he is hit by the Anti Black Coat's "Shadow Steal" technique, that can be avoided by either blocking or dodging forward. He may as well combine Doubleflight followed by Firaga Burst and Ice Barrage for a temporary safe spot making him avoid most of the boss's attacks while dealing major damage.

Trivia

  • Much like Ansem, Anti-Black Coat does not have a Secret Portal that allows the player to re-fight them after the main story is comeplete. Until Kingdom Hearts 2.8, which gave more memory space to save boss fights, this proved to be annoyance to those who enjoyed the fight.
