Composition[edit]

"Scent of Silence" is approximately forty-eight seconds long and plays at a tempo of 60 beats per minute. It has a time signature of 4/4 time and is written in the key of G minor. "Scent of Silence" has no introduction nor conclusion, and loops seamlessly. The instrumentation consists of piano and female vocals[KH Re:CoM].

The song consists of a four-measure phrase repeated three times. The first time, the piano is the only instrument-- the texture of the piece is rather thin. The second time, the vocals add depth with background chords. The third time, the vocals hold an i6/4 chord and fade out as the piano continues to play. In the first two versions of the phrase, the melody ends on an unresolved chord, but the third time, the piano melody resolves to the tonic of G minor.
