Origin[edit]
Moana, called "Vaiana" in certain regions, first appeared as the main protagonist of the Disney animated film Moana. A teenage girl from the fictional island of Motoniu, Moana grew up with her grandmother Tala's stories of her people's legends and history, including the exploits of the demigod Maui and his theft of the Heart of Te Fiti. Moana is being trained by her father to become the next chief of the village, but her desire for adventure and special connection to the ocean often puts them at odds with one another, coming to a head when a blight strikes the island. Moana is informed by her grandmother that the story of Maui she was told as a child is the cause of the darkness, and that the ocean had chosen Moana to save it.
After informing Moana of the seafaring roots of her people and giving her the Heart, Tala dies, telling Moana to find Maui and take him to restore the Heart of Te Fiti. After taking off with a canoe, Moana braves the ocean until she finds and recruits Maui, who has been stranded on a small island since he stole the heart. After reclaiming Maui's hook, which he had lost while stealing the Heart, Moana and Maui begin to bond with each other, helping each other with their obstacles.
Eventually, the group confront Te Ka, the Lava monster guarding Te Fiti. Things go awry and Maui's hook is damaged in the battle, leading to him leaving her. In despair, Moana is visited by Tala's spirit, who reminds Moana of who she is and gives Moana the confidence to take the Heart back herself. She confronts Te Ka and with the help of her chicken friend Hei Hei and Maui, sails to Te Fiti. When there, she is unable to find where to restore the Heart, until she realizes that Te Ka is Te Fiti. She redeems Te Fiti and returns to Motonui, now free from the blight, and is finally accepted by her father for who she is and leads her people to a new age of exploration.
In the film, she is voiced by Auli'i Cravalho as a teenager, and by Louise Bush as a child.
