Before Kingdom Hearts χ
Ephemer becomes a Keyblade wielder at an unknown point. Sometime after becoming a Keyblade wielder, Ephemer meets Skuld and joins her party. For a long time it's just the two of them in the party, however more and more wielders gradually join alongside them, and together they spend all their time gathering as much Lux as possible. Due to their busy schedules, Ephemer and Skuld begin talking less and less, until one day Ephemer turns to her and tells her that she'll be all right on her own from there on out; leaving the party shortly thereafter.
At an unknown point, Ephemer is chosen by the Keyblade and joins one of the Unions. Shortly thereafter, Ephemer meets Skuld and joins her party. More wielders gradually join them in their mission to gather Lux, but due to their busy schedules, Ephemer and Skuld begin drifting apart, putting a strain on their friendship. Eventually, Ephemer decides to leave the group to go his own way.Quest 555: Inside the Clock Tower Pt. 10

Ephemer begins to question the secrets of the world and the Book of Prophecies. One day, Ephemer approaches Ava and asks her why the Unions compete against each other rather than work together, and Ava explains that it is because the Master of Masters arranged for things to be this way between the Unions.

Sometime later, Ephemer comes across a depressed Ava sitting alone at the Fountain Square. Ava confides in Ephemer about her doubts about the Master's teachings regarding the competition between the Unions, much to his surprise. Ava approves of Ephemer's desire to solve the mysteries of the world, as she believes that people should question things and think for themselves. Ephemer jokingly tries to get Ava to talk about the Book of Prophecies, but she denies him. Ephemer tells her that he had befriended a Keyblade wielder from a different Union, and Ava is pleased that wielders from other Unions could work together. Before Ephemer leaves, he asks Ava to cheer up, which brings a smile to her face.Quest 401: The Clock Tower Pt. 1

Later that night, Ephemer returns to the sewers to continue his investigation alone. Before Ephemer can enter the Clock Tower, however, he is confronted by Ava. Relocating to the outskirts of Daybreak Town, Ava divulges the final entry in the Book of Prophecies, which details the events of the Keyblade War, and recruits Ephemer to join her Dandelions to ensure the future of the light. Ava selects five people from the Dandelions, including Ephemer, to act as Union leaders in the Foretellers' stead after the war. Ephemer is reluctant about becoming a Union leader, but Ava implores him to rise up to the challenge and provides a book of rules that must be followed once the new Union leaders take charge to prevent future destruction. Moreover, Ava informs Ephemer that the Union leaders must erase the memories of the Keyblade War from their fellow Dandelions and avoid any possible connections between the two worlds, thus the truth about the war must be kept a secret among the new Union leaders. In spite of his misgivings, Ephemer accepts this task and is then sent to another realm to meet the other Union leaders in the Keyblade Graveyard following the war.

From this other realm, Ephemer attempts to reach out to Player by showing them his conversation with Ava in a dream. Around the same time, Ephemer also visits Skuld in a dream and tasks her to seek out Player, warning her about the impending war.

When the Dandelions cross over to the new world, Ephemer is reunited with Skuld, who had accepted Ava's invitation to join the Dandelions. They venture back to the Keyblade Graveyard following the conclusion of the Keyblade War and find Player unconscious on the battlefield. When Player awakens, Ephemer happily reunites with Player and convinces them to join the Dandelions. Ephemer and Skuld bring Player to the new world, where Player's memories of the Keyblade War, along with the memories of the other Dandelions, are erased upon arrival.

As per Ava's instructions, Ephemer goes to the Keyblade Graveyard and is shocked to learn that Skuld is one of the new Union leaders, as the identity of the Union leaders was meant to be kept secret until they all met after the war. They are soon joined by the third Union leader, Ventus.Quest 665: Target: Blitz Spear Pt. 5 While waiting for the other Union leaders to arrive, Skuld and Ephemer bond with Ventus, who admits that he is envious of their close relationship because he has always been alone. Ephemer and Skuld assure Ventus that they consider him a friend.

When the fourth Union leader, Brain, arrives, he asks if Ephemer is their leader, and Ephemer denies this, as the decision must be made once all of the Union leaders are present. When the others begin expressing their discomfort with lying to everyone about the Keyblade War, Ephemer thinks about the pain that Player endured because of the war and states that no one else should have to carry the burden of the past.Quest 675: Master Aced

Later on in Daybreak Town, Chirithy reports to Ephemer and Skuld about Player's persisting nightmares about the Keyblade War. While Skuld encourages that Chirithy to protect Player from the truth, Ephemer mentions that he senses a different darkness that he plans to investigate with Skuld. Once Chirithy leaves, Skuld questions Ephemer's wisdom about telling Chirithy about the darkness, as they likely just made Chirithy worry, but Ephemer argues that it affects everyone. Ephemer mentions that he detects something strange about Union χ, though Skuld reminds him that the rules dictate that they lead the Union χ.Quest 670: Target: Chill Ripper Pt. 5

After the final Union leader, Lauriam, arrives, the Union leaders go to Daybreak Town and enter the Foretellers' Chamber. When Skuld proposes that they begin choosing which Union each of them will lead, Ephemer recommends that they maintain the Union χ in order to prevent the conflicts of the past world, with the other Union leaders agreeing to reconstitute the old system later as stated in the rules. Brain suggests that, while the Dandelions are reliving the events of the past, they collect the necessary ingredients to create new Spirits and sends Ephemer, Skuld, and Ventus to collect the ingredients while he and Lauriam stay behind to make the necessary preparations.Quest 735: The Shiny Hammer Pt. 5

While mulling over the Shift Pride, a friendly competition detailed in the rulebook in which the Dandelions would compete against one another, Ephemer is joined by Lauriam. He reveals his reservations about the Shift Pride, not understanding why Ava would want them to do such a thing. Lauriam suggests that Ephemer take it easy, believing he is pushing himself too hard since becoming a Union Leader. When asking what Lauriam is planning on doing, Ephemer was reminded that the Dandelions are reliving their experiences within data, meaning that they all have data recorded of themselves, admitting that there is someone he's looking for, someone meant to be among the Dandelions, so he's intent on searching the data for her. Ephemer offers his help, but Lauriam wants to do it on his own, as it is a personal matter.

When the time comes to discuss the matter of the Shift Pride, Ephemer calls a meeting between the Union leaders. As Lauriam is absent, Brain informs them that, whatever the agenda is, Lauriam asked to side with Ephemer. He and Brain votes in favor for the Shift Pride, while Ventus and Skuld reject the notion. Ephemer then explains that he intends on having wielders compete against the data versions of their comrades to avoid a clashing of hearts, admitting that Lauriam had given him the idea. The group wonders about who Lauriam could be looking for, but on Brain's suggestion, they decide to wait for Lauriam to come to them rather than pry.Quest 846: More Heartless in Daybreak Town Pt. 1

Soon, Lauriam joins the Union leaders in the Foretellers' Chamber to ask Skuld about his younger sister Strelitzia's whereabouts, as Skuld was last seen going into the same building Strelitzia had entered just prior to the Keyblade War. After listening to their conversation, Brain theorizes that Strelitzia was looking for a Keyblade wielder that was going to fight in the Keyblade War and likely wanted to induct this wielder to the Dandelions. This reminds Ephemer of Player, and so he and Lauriam leave to ask Player about Strelitzia. Quest 851: More Heartless in Daybreak Town Pt. 6

Ephemer finds Player in the Fountain Square and the two reconnect, with Ephemer apologizing for having been so busy lately with his duties as a Union leader. Ephemer then introduces Player to Lauriam, who asks about his sister. After Lauriam departs, Ephemer spends the rest of the day completing missions with Player to take a break from being a Union leader. Quest 856: Daybreak Fun with Ephemer Pt. 1

Later, as Ephemer bids farewell to Player, he notices a glitch circling above the Clock Tower and asks that Player help him investigate it. Quest 861: Trouble at the Tower? Pt. 1 On their way there, their path is blocked by Heartless born from the glitch. Quest 865: Trouble at the Tower? Pt. 5 Ephemer and Player make it to the tower's center where he introduces Player to Ventus after a Heartless attack. Surprised to see that he's here, Ephemer is told by Ventus that he saw an apparition of Ava and went looking for Brain, to which Ephemer confirms that he is in the control room. The trio are then ambushed by Darklings, but they able to fend them off and make their way to the control room to check on Brain. Quest 870: Clock Tower Investigation Pt. 5

Ephemer begins questioning things, wanting to know the secrets of the world and the Book of Prophecies. As such, Ephemer approaches Ava and questions her as to why the Unions fight one another rather than working together - though Ava remains firm in believing that it is simply because the Master of Masters said so, and his word is absolute.
Brain explains to Ephemer, Player, and Ventus that the worlds they have been visiting since the Keyblade War have been data recreations of the same worlds they previously visited. However, a new world that had been previously unconnected to Daybreak Town has appeared, and seems to be responsible for the glitches that Ephemer and Player had been chasing. Ephemer and Player agree to investigate this new world and Brain opens a portal for them to travel to it.Quest 871: The Control Room

Ephemer meets Player one day while in Waterfront Park - where he is bested by an Invisible; with Player stepping in and helping  Ephemer defeat the Invisible. Admitting that he'd gotten a little cocky, Ephemer introduces himself to Player, and the two find that they are from opposing Unions. Even so, since Ephemer had been working on something outside of his Union for the day, he opts to explain his investigation to Player in return for helping him out. Ephemer then reveals to Player how the worlds they visit are merely projections and that they Lux they collect in actually from the world thier in. In order to better explain himself, Ephemer elaborates that the worlds are connected by land, however it's impossible to reach them all, thus the mechanism that creates the projections allows them to collect Lux from faraway lands. Though he's still unsure how it all works, Ephemer assumes that it's the Book of Prophecies that's creating the projections. Furthermore, Ephemer voices his desire to know why wielders are fighting over Lux without knowing why - revealing that he'd come to learn that the reason is because the Unions all have different goals.
Ephemer and Player emerge into a tunnel and chase after a Darkling, leading them to arrive at Game Central Station. They decide to split up, Ephemer trusting Player to investigate the glitches while he chases the Darkling.Quest 876: To a New World Pt. 5 Ephemer later meets back up with Player in Cy-Bug Sector and helps them chase after the Darkling Cy-Bug.Quest 898: Ralph! Pt. 6 Together, they are able to defeat the Darkling Cy-Bug with the help of Calhoun. Quest 905: The Threat Once brought up to speed, Ephemer asks Player to keep looking into the glitches while he heads back to Daybreak Town to inform the others. He assures a disappointed Player that he trusts them and knows they'll be fine on their own, and promises that their hearts will always be connected. Quest 906: Investigating the Glitches Pt. 1

With this in mind, Player explains a dream he'd had the night before in which he saw the Aced, Ava, Gula, Invi, and Ira meeting with a hooded figure in the Foreteller's Chamber. Intrigued, Ephemer suggests that the two of them investigate the room from Player's dream. When Ephemer questions whether or not Player knows where the room is, Player confirms that he does and motions toward the Clock Tower, with Ephemer understanding and explaining that he'd been there a few times before, but he'd never found a way in. The two split up in order to find some way of getting in, with Player eventually finding an entrance through the sewers located in a drained river. As Player and Ephemer proceed through the sewers, they're mobbed by Heartless - with Player getting bested by an Invisible on one occasion. Ephemer is quick to defeat the Invisible and heal Player however, joking that the two of them were now even. A crashing noise from ahead prompts Player to proceed forward - only to be stopped by Ephemer, who suggests that they come back later - reasoning that it had taken them a long time just to get this far, and they still don't know how long it will take them to enter the Clock Tower and find the Foreteller's Chamber - so it's going to look suspicious to their Union Leaders if they're missing for too long. Agreeing to meet the following day, Ephemer parts ways with his new friend.
Ephemer meets up with the others in the Control Room, where he and Brain explain the source of the glitches. Ventus mentions that they've also seen a glitch that looked like Ava, while Lauriam mentions having seen a glitch of Strelitzia as well. Brain concludes that they must be in the data Daybreak Town, to which Ephemer expresses concern over whether the real Daybreak Town still exists.Quest 910: Investigating the Glitches Pt. 5

Ephemer comes across Ava sitting alone in the Fountain Square, asking if he could join her. Taking notice of Ava's stressed demeanor, Ephemer asks if something had happened. Though Ava remains vague, she reminds Ephemer of what he'd asked her before - about why the Unions compete rather than working together and admits that she's always wondered the same thing. Confused, Ephemer voices how he'd thought that it was simply because the Master of Masters had said so. Ava confirms this, but explains that she's started to question things. Bringing up how Ephemer wanted answers in order to solve the mysteries of the world - Ava reveals that she thinks that people questioning things and thinking for themselves is the way things should be. Shocked, Ephemer notes how Ava really isn't acting like herself and suggests that talking about the Book of Prophecies might cheer her up. Though Ava denies Ephemer - he claims that he had been joking, but either way Ava establishes that it'd be best if the Unions could work together and be friends. Ephemer then mentions how he'd met someone from another Union earlier and that he was going to meet them again the next day. Admitting that it sounded like fun, Ava suggests that Ephemer head back home and get some rest in preparation. Before leaving, Ephemer asks that, while he doesn't know what's gotten Ava so down, she cheer up - which makes Ava smile.
Brain asks Ephemer to meet him alone on the hill overlooking Daybreak Town. There, Brain explains that Ava had entrusted him with the Book of Prophecy as well as the list of the Dandelions who were meant to become new Union leaders. Brain shows Ephemer the list, revealing that Strelitzia was supposed to be a Union leader, but has been replaced by Ventus. Brain sends his Chirithy to bring Ventus and Skuld to come talk with them.Quest 920: Chocolate Monster Madness Brain and Ephemer then question Ventus about his memories of meeting with Ava, and Brain reveals that Ventus's name was not on the list that Ava gave him.Quest 925: To the Kart Bakery Pt. 2 Ephemer suggests that it was really Darkness that Ventus has spoken with. Upon further questioning, Ventus grows confused and begins to doubt himself. The four of them decide to return to the clock tower.Quest 935: Heartless in the Hideout Pt. 3

That night, Ephemer ventures into the sewers alone - apologizing to Player before continuing his investigation. Before Ephemer can enter the Clock Tower however, he is confronted by Ava. Relocating to a more private setting on the Outskirts, Ava reveals the final entry in the Book of Prophecies, which details the events of the Keyblade War - an event that will subsequently bring about the end of the world. As well, Ava reveals her role to Ephemer, being to assemble exceptional Keyblade wielders, regardless of their Unions, into a separate faction called the Dandelions, who would not take part in the Keyblade War and instead travel to another realm to ensure that Light would not expire; inviting Ephemer to join the Dandelions. Though skeptic, Ephemer agrees, and Ava proceeds to explain that she intends on choosing five people from the Dandelions - including Ephemer - to act as Union Leaders in the Foreteller's stead following the Keyblade War. This makes Ephemer uneasy - prompting Ava to ask if he feels alright about being a Union Leader. Ephemer tells Ava that he can't handle becoming a Union Leader all of a sudden, claiming that all this talk of destruction is a pretty bad joke. Even so, Ava stresses that they do not have time for this, from now on everything depends on them, because if someone doesn't gather Lux, Light will expire.
After bringing Ventus to rest in his room, Ephemer, Skuld, and Brain return to the Foretellers' Chambers to talk about what happened.Quest 960: To the Race Track! Pt. 5 An injured Lauriam overhears them and enters the room, demanding that Brain tell him what happened to Strelitzia. Ephemer tries to calm Lauriam down, but is knocked away. Ventus enters the room and admits he is responsible for what happened to Strelitzia, causing Lauriam to shift his anger towards him. Ephemer again attempts to stop Lauriam, summoning his Keyblade to block Lauriam from striking Ventus. As he does, Ventus collapses and Darkness emerges from him.Quest 965: Pest Control Pt. 3

Ava implores Ephemer to rise up to the challenge alongside his fellow Union Leaders so that they can lead each of the Unions and show everyone the way; asking if having four more wielders by his side wouldn't make it easier for Ephemer. As Ephemer accepts this, Ava provides Ephemer with a book of rules, explaining that the rules within must be followed absolutely. Thinking of what's transpired, Ephemer mentions that even though they've been talking for a while, he still doesn't buy all that Ava has said about the end of the world and the Union Leaders. However, Ava instructs Ephemer to do as she says regardless, which Ephemer agrees to do. Ava explains that what she's asking of Ephemer will help to prepare him for the other worlds, revealing that soon all the Dandelions will follow. Furthermore, they will experience the same events in the new world that they have already experienced, only without the future of destruction. Ephemer compares this to an overwrite - with Ava adding that the Union Leaders must erase the memories of the destruction from the minds of their fellow Dandelions, while also avoiding any possible connections between the two worlds. When Ephemer asks if this means that, to the Dandelions, it will be as if the end of the world never happened, which Ava confirms - insisting that there is no need for such tragic memories. Thus, the truth about the Keyblade War must be kept a secret among the new Union Leaders; asking that they work with the Chirithy in order to make this happen. Ephemer questions if it wouldn't be better to move forward with the memories of the tragedy within their Hearts. Ava anticipates that Ephemer would say this, asking if he will feel the same way when the Keyblade War is finally upon them. Ava then sends Ephemer into an unchained state so that he can travel to another realm in preparation for what is to come - instructing him to meet the other Union Leaders in the Keyblade Graveyard following the Keyblade War.

The Union leaders discover that Darkness was responsible for replacing Strelitzia with Ventus. Darkness claims that it had acted to fulfill Ventus's desire for power; Ephemer refutes it by asserting that Ventus would never go so far as to steal power from someone else. Ephemer then battles Darkness alongside Brain and Skuld.Quest 970: Pest Control Pt. 8 Skuld and Brain are knocked aside, leaving Ephemer as the last one standing, who admits that even he can't stand up to Darkness alone. However, Skuld, Brain, and Lauriam gather their resolve, rejoining the fight. At that moment, Player returns through a portal and fights alongside them. Darkness tells them that their world is fated for destruction, but Ephemer refuses to believe it, saying that Ava brought them together and wouldn't just throw them away. The five of them fight Darkness, but are unable to defeat it; Darkness claims that it is formless, and thus cannot be destroyed. Ventus awakens and says that he will give Darkness a form that can be destroyed before clashing with it, ending the battle.Quest 977: Darkness Looms

From this other realm, Ephemer attempts to reach out to Player - showing Player his conversation with Ava in a dream. From there, Ephemer meets Player in the Fountain Square as they were originally meant to - apologizing for being late by saying that there was something important that he had to take care of; asking for forgiveness. Ephemer and Player then proceed into the sewers in the dream, where Ephemer leads Player to the location they were meant to continue their investigation from. However, when Player does not appear ready to proceed, Ephemer reveals that he'd had a feeling this might be the case. Telling Player that he'll be waiting, Ephemer disperses into a cloud of Dandelions, allowing Player to wake from their dream - now equipped with clues to lead him to Ava. Around the same time, Ephemer visits Skuld in her dreams as well, instructing her to seek out Player, while also informing her that the end of the world is near.
Afterwards, Ephemer expresses uncertainty about the fate of the world and resolves to save everyone. As the data world begins to deteriorate, he and the others make plans to escape back to the real world using the lifeboats. Ephemer urges Brain to be the first to return, arguing that Brain has the best chance of figuring out how to help everyone from outside. Ephemer also tries to convince Player to take a lifeboat, but they refuse, choosing to stay with him instead. Brain gives Ephemer his Keyblade, Master's Defender, and the Book of Prophecies before returning to the real world.Quest 978: What Comes After

Kingdom Hearts χ [Chi]
Ephemer, Skuld, and Player are confronted by four manifestations of Darkness. Darkness asks that they open a gate for it to leave and infect other worlds, to which Ephemer refuses. As they prepare to fight, Ephemer urges Player to take one of the lifeboats and escape. Realizing the dire situation they are in, Player chooses instead to pretend to be possessed by Darkness in a bid to save Ephemer and Skuld. Player threatens Skuld's life, goading Ephemer into sending them and the four Darknesses through a glitching portal. Ephemer tearfully closes the portal behind them, trapping them.
When the Dandelions cross over to the new world as per Ava's instructions, Ephemer is reunited with Skuld - who had accepted Ava's invitation to join the Dandelions. Together, they venture back to the Keyblade Graveyard following the conclusion of the Keyblade War, finding that Player had survived, but lie unconscious. Waking, Player is shocked to see Ephemer again, reminding him that he’d broken their promise. Accepting responsibility for this, Ephemer voices his happiness over finally reuniting with Player before extending a hand to Player and suggesting that they go together. As Player accepts becoming a Dandelion, Ephemer and Skuld bring Player to the new world, where they rebuilt the Realm of Light with the Light from within their Hearts. Upon Player’s arrival in this new realm, just like the other Dandelions, he forgets everything about the Keyblade War and the world he’d left behind, just as Ava had intended.

Kingdom Hearts Union χ [Cross]
As per Ava's instructions, Ephemer ventures to the Keyblade Graveyard. Though Ephemer looks around, he can't see anyone else - finding that he is the first of the five new Union Leaders to arrive. Just then, a voice rings out from behind him, asking if they are they second? Turning, a shocked Ephemer sees Skuld - who asks if Ephemer is disappointed to see that it's her, mentioning that she'd anticipated seeing him there. Ephemer reminisces about how the two of them had already visited the Keyblade Graveyard together since the end of the Keyblade War, however he didn't think that she'd be chosen as one of the Union Leaders. Skuld reasons that it's in part because the identity of the Union Leaders was meant to be kept secret until they all met at this moment. Skuld then wonders aloud who the other three Union Leaders could be - but Ephemer admits that he has no idea - admitting that, before Skuld showed up, he hadn't put much faith in what Ava had said, so he couldn't possibly think of who could be coming. Skuld then sees someone in the distance.
Ephemer helps Skuld into one of the lifeboats and they return to the real world together. They go outside to witness the destruction of Daybreak Town before returning to take the lifeboats again and escape the collapsing world. As they enter the lifeboats, Skuld thanks Ephemer for being there with her, and Ephemer recalls his memories of fighting alongside Player. The ceiling collapses above their closed pods, filling the room with rubble.

When the third Union Leader gets closer, Skuld welcomes him and introduces herself, while Ephemer asks if he'd been sent by Ava as well. The third confirms this, prompting Ephemer to step forward in order to shake his hand, introducing himself in the process. The third then introduces himself as Ventus, though he asks that Ephemer and Skuld call him Ven. While bonding, Ephemer and Skuld reveal that they had been friends prior to becoming Dandelions. Ven admits that he's sort of jealous of their relationship because he's always been kind of a loner; something which Skuld can relate to. However, Ven claims not to be anyone special either, as he'd never ranked very high, so really he's not sure why he was chosen to be one of the new Union Leaders. Skuld conveys that Ava must have had some reason for choosing Ven - though Ven explains that he'd never really spoken to Ava before so he doesn't know what she was like. Ephemer pipes up, saying that Ava was really easy to talk to - amused Skuld tells Ephemer that he thinks everyone is easy to talk to; though he denies it. Ven voices his jealousy over Ephemer and Skuld's friendship - but Ephemer corrects Ven by stating that he's their friend now too.
Later, Ephemer is seen awakening in the lifeboat, floating in the waters of the ruined Daybreak Town. Sometime after this, Ephemer found the town of Scala ad Caelum.Quest 979: The Final Battle

With that, the fourth Union Leader makes his presence know, commenting on how nice the concept of friends sounds and introducing himself as Blaine. Blaine admits that he'd thought he would be the last to arrive - though surprisingly this isn't the case. When Ephemer confirms this, Blaine asks if Ephemer is their leader - though Ephemer denies that he is the leader and stresses that it hasn't been decided yet, as they first must wait until they've all arrived. Blaine accepts this, asking instead if the rules they'd been provided were absolute. Skuld suggests that the rules would be absolute, prompting Blaine to compare her to Ava because of her diligence; which she notes is the second time that's happened. Hearing this, Ephemer jokes that Skuld isn't as amazing as Ava. Blaine then questions if they can really believe all of this - voicing his discomfort with lying to everyone about the Keyblade War; something that had bothered Ven as well. Thinking about the pain that Player endured because of the Keyblade War, Ephemer firmly states that it must remain a secret, as he doesn't want people to remember the tragedy they'll follow the rules. Blaine, Ven and Skuld all accept this, stating that they all believe in Ephemer. Together, the four new Union Leaders await the arrival of their final comrade.

After founding Scala ad Caelum, Ephemer continued to live on and had a family of his own. His family line would continue until the birth of his descendant Xehanort. At an undetermined period following the Keyblade War, Ephemer's physical body perished. However, part of him remained in the Keyblade Graveyard, likely due to his connection to the place.

Later, in Daybreak Town, Chirithy reports to Ephemer and Skuld about Player's persisting nightmares. Though Chirithy felt guilty about lying to Player initially, he really does want to allow Player to forget. Skuld asks that Chirithy push through it, which Chirithy agrees to do, because Player is his best friend. Ephemer then states that, for Player's sake, he leaves what he'd told Chirithy earlier about the Union Cross up to him. Skuld adds that surely Player's tragic memories within his Heart will be worn away as he goes on adventures with his friends. Unexpectedly, Ephemer mentions that he also senses a different Darkness in the world from that of the old one, being more complex - so he doesn't fully understand it himself - but he senses a strong intention. Skuld interjects however and advises Chirithy to leave it to them and focus on taking care of Player. Once Chirithy has gone, Skuld asks why Ephemer told Chirithy about the darkness, as they likely just made Chirithy worry. Ephemer apologizes, arguing that it affects Chirithy as well, and that the more that the new world differs from its predecessor, the more uneasiness will be generated. Furthermore, the Union Cross results in Ephemer sensing a different kind of malice and Darkness. Skuld then reminds Ephemer that the rules dictate that they start the Union Cross - which Ephemer accepts, suggesting that they'll just have to let their Heart's be their guiding keys.

—Ephemer

Ephemer is a Keyblade Master who appears in Kingdom Hearts χ. He seeks to discover the truth behind the gathering of Lux and the structure of the world.

He claims to be in a Union differing from Player's, regardless of what they choose.[1]

Development[edit]

Prior to the 5.0.1 update of Kingdom Hearts Dark Road, Xehanort is referred to as the great-great-grandson of Ephemer, rather than his descendant.

Story[edit]

Before Kingdom Hearts χ[edit]

At an unknown point, Ephemer is chosen by the Keyblade and joins one of the Unions. Shortly thereafter, Ephemer meets Skuld and joins her party. More wielders gradually join them in their mission to gather Lux, but due to their busy schedules, Ephemer and Skuld begin drifting apart, putting a strain on their friendship. Eventually, Ephemer decides to leave the group to go his own way. Quest 555: Inside the Clock Tower Pt. 10

Ephemer begins to question the secrets of the world and the Book of Prophecies. One day, Ephemer approaches Ava and asks her why the Unions compete against each other rather than work together, and Ava explains that it is because the Master of Masters arranged for things to be this way between the Unions.

Kingdom Hearts χ[Chi][edit]

Ephemer meets Player while in Waterfront Park, where he is bested by an Invisible, and Player steps in to help Ephemer defeat it. Ephemer introduces himself to Player, and the two learn that they are from opposing Unions. In spite of this, Ephemer reveals that he is investigating the truth behind the Book of Prophecies and why the Unions compete against each other for Lux.

When Player tells Ephemer about a dream they had the night before, where the Foretellers met with a hooded figure in the Foretellers' Chamber, he suggests that they investigate the Foretellers' Chamber located in the Clock Tower. Quest 362: To Waterfront Park Pt. 4 Ephemer and Player attempt to sneak into the Clock Tower through an entrance in the sewers, but are mobbed by Heartless along the way and unable to proceed further. Ephemer persuades Player that they should continue their investigation the next day since it would appear suspicious if they're gone for too long.

Ava voices her doubt about the Master of Master's teachings to Ephemer.

Before Ephemer leaves, he asks Ava to cheer up, which brings a smile to her face. Quest 401: The Clock Tower Pt.

Ventus meets Ephemer.

As per Ava's instructions, Ephemer goes to the Keyblade Graveyard and is shocked to learn that Skuld is one of the new Union leaders, as the identity of the Union leaders was meant to be kept secret until they all met after the war. They are soon joined by the third Union leader, Ventus. Quest 665: Target: Blitz Spear Pt.

When the others begin expressing their discomfort with lying to everyone about the Keyblade War, Ephemer thinks about the pain that Player endured because of the war and states that no one else should have to carry the burden of the past. Quest 675: Master Aced

Ephemer mentions that he detects something strange about Union χ, though Skuld reminds him that the rules dictate that they lead the Union χ. Quest 670: Target: Chill Ripper Pt.

Brain suggests that, while the Dandelions are reliving the events of the past, they collect the necessary ingredients to create new Spirits and sends Ephemer, Skuld, and Ventus to collect the ingredients while he and Lauriam stay behind to make the necessary preparations. Quest 735: The Shiny Hammer Pt.

The group wonders about who Lauriam could be looking for, but on Brain's suggestion, they decide to wait for Lauriam to come to them rather than pry. Quest 846: More Heartless in Daybreak Town Pt.

Ephemer investigates the glitches with Player.

Ephemer and Player agree to investigate this new world and Brain opens a portal for them to travel to it. Quest 871: The Control Room

Ephemer and Player go through a glitched portal to the new world.

Ephemer and Player emerge into a tunnel and chase after a Darkling, leading them to arrive at Game Central Station. They decide to split up, Ephemer trusting Player to investigate the glitches while he chases the Darkling. Quest 876: To a New World Pt. 5 Ephemer later meets back up with Player in Cy-Bug Sector and helps them chase after the Darkling Cy-Bug. Quest 898: Ralph! 1

Ephemer meets up with the others in the Control Room, where he and Brain explain the source of the glitches. Ventus mentions that they've also seen a glitch that looked like Ava, while Lauriam mentions having seen a glitch of Strelitzia as well. Brain concludes that they must be in the data Daybreak Town, to which Ephemer expresses concern over whether the real Daybreak Town still exists. Quest 910: Investigating the Glitches Pt. 5

Brain sends his Chirithy to bring Ventus and Skuld to come talk with them. Quest 920: Chocolate Monster Madness Brain and Ephemer then question Ventus about his memories of meeting with Ava, and Brain reveals that Ventus's name was not on the list that Ava gave him. Quest 925: To the Kart Bakery Pt. 2 Ephemer suggests that it was really Darkness that Ventus has spoken with. Upon further questioning, Ventus grows confused and begins to doubt himself. The four of them decide to return to the clock tower. Quest 935: Heartless in the Hideout Pt. 3

After bringing Ventus to rest in his room, Ephemer, Skuld, and Brain return to the Foretellers' Chambers to talk about what happened. Quest 960: To the Race Track! As he does, Ventus collapses and Darkness emerges from him. Quest 965: Pest Control Pt. 3

Screenshot of the Ephemer & Skuld cutscene from KHUX
Ephemer thinks of his friendship with Player.

The Union leaders discover that Darkness was responsible for replacing Strelitzia with Ventus. Darkness claims that it had acted to fulfill Ventus's desire for power; Ephemer refutes it by asserting that Ventus would never go so far as to steal power from someone else. Ephemer then battles Darkness alongside Brain and Skuld. Quest 970: Pest Control Pt. Ventus awakens and says that he will give Darkness a form that can be destroyed before clashing with it, ending the battle. Quest 977: Darkness Looms

Brain gives Ephemer his Keyblade, Master's Defender, and the Book of Prophecies before returning to the real world. Quest 978: What Comes After

Later, Ephemer is seen awakening in the lifeboat, floating in the waters of the ruined Daybreak Town. Sometime after this, Ephemer found the town of Scala ad Caelum. Quest 979: The Final Battle
