"Sanctuary" and its Japanese counterpart "Passion" are a pair of songs written and sung by Utada Hikaru. They are main themes of the Kingdom Hearts series.
There are two main variations of the pieces: "Sanctuary -opening version-"[1] and "Passion -opening version-", which are the original versions of the songs, and the softer "Sanctuary -after the battle-"[2] and "Passion -after the battle-".[3]
An instrumental arrangement of the piece titled "Passion -KINGDOM Orchestra Instrumental Version-"[4] was introduced in Kingdom Hearts II, arranged by Kaoru Wada and performed by the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra.
A third vocal version of the piece, titled "Passion ~single version~", was released by Utada. It is an extended arrangement with additional lyrics. This variation has never been featured in a Kingdom Hearts game, although it was distributed with Kingdom Hearts songs on Square Enix Melody and included on the YouTube version of the Kingdom Hearts Official Playlist.

CompositionEdit
"Passion" was originally released on Utada's Ultra Blue album and reached #2 in the Oricon Singles Chart in 2006. "Sanctuary (Opening)" was first released on the album This Is the One as a bonus track.
In both languages, the song contains reversed lyrics, sung by Utada. The reversed lyrics are in English in both versions. They include "My heart's a battleground", "I need more affection than you know", "So many ups and downs", and "I need true emotions".
"Sanctuary (Ending)" and "Passion -after the battle" are very similar to the original versions. These arrangements are much quieter for most of the song until the ending, which uses a faster instrumental than the rest of the song.

LyricsEdit
- In you and I there's a new land
- Angels in flight
- A sanctuary, my sanctuary, yeah
- Where fears and lies melt away
- Music will tie
- What's left of me, what's left of me now
- I watch you fast asleep
- All I fear means nothing
- In you and I there's a new land
- Angels in flight
- A sanctuary, my sanctuary, yeah
- Where fears and lies melt away
- Music will tie
- What's left of me, what's left of me
- So many ups and downs
- My heart's a battleground
- You show me how to see that nothing is whole and
- nothing is broken
- In you and I there's a new land
- Angels in flight
- A sanctuary, my sanctuary, yeah
- Where fears and lies melt away
- Music will tie
- What's left of me, what's left of me now
