Magic Mirror
- "The Queen is gone, My service done. Adieu, O victorious one."
- —The Spirit's final words to Aqua before disappearing
The Magic Mirror, containing a tortured soul known as the Spirit of the Magic Mirror within, is a mirror that gives the Queen advice and can answer any question, the most common one being "Magic mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?". It first appeared in Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
Story
Kingdom Hearts χ
The Magic Mirror's power was channeled by the Book of Prophecies to form the Magic Mirror Medal.
Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep
The Magic Mirror first appears when the Queen asks the mirror who is the fairest one of all. The mirror replies that Snow White is the fairest.
The Queen later promises that Terra could use the mirror to find Master Xehanort on the condition that Terra kills Snow White and brings the Queen the princess's heart. Terra refuses the Queen's offer, and the Queen, insulted and outraged, commands the mirror to destroy Terra, but the mirror refuses, stating it can only answer questions. The Queen throws a potion at the mirror, causing it to transform into an Unversed (In the Japanese version, she emits a red aura that has the same effect on the mirror). The mirror then sucks Terra into itself and fights him. However, it is defeated, and Terra is released from the world inside the mirror. Terra then demands the Queen to ask the mirror where Master Xehanort is. The mirror responds by telling Terra the Keyblade Master resides at the Keyblade Graveyard. Terra thanks the mirror for its cooperation before taking his leave.
The Magic Mirror later appears before Aqua as she enters the Mirror Chamber, who hopes to find a means to to awaken Snow White from her sleeping curse. Sensing an ominous presence from the mirror, Aqua investigates; the Spirit appears before Aqua, shocking her backwards before drawing Aqua into his realm to conduct battle. After being bested by Aqua, the Magic Mirror releases her. Congratulating Aqua on her victory, the Magic Mirror explains that he is no longer bound in service to the Queen; she has perished, and thus he no longer is needed. With that, the Spirit vanishes back into the nothingness he came from, leaving Aqua without any further clues.
Appearance
The Spirit of the Magic Mirror is a white theatre mask, though the light often falls on it in such a way to give it a two-toned appearance. It has high-set eyebrows and its "eyes" are empty holes, similarly to its mouth. The back of the Spirit's "face" is black.
The actual mirror is surrounded by chiseled tiles representing the twelve signs of the western Zodiac.
Personality
The Spirit of the Magic Mirror is not inherently evil, rather it is an obedient servant who will do whatever it is told. It is shown to have little to no emotion, which is emphasized by the dull, monotonous tone in his voice. Despite its loyalty to the Queen, it has refused her orders, when it's unable to carry them out an example being when it was ordered to destroy Terra. It refused, pointing out it could only answer questions, though it was later given magic so it could draw in people to fight them. The Spirit also has the unusual tendency to talk in rhymes.
Abilities
The Spirit of the Magic Mirror is an agile fighter, keeping its distance from opponents while shooting fireballs from its mouth. It also uses the mirror world to its advantage, creating replicas to confuse and attack opponents. It often slides horizontally across the ground while creating frame-by-frame reflections of its last few positions, inflicting damage to its opponents.
Origin
The Magic Mirror first appeared in Snow White and the Seven Dwarves as the Queen's counselor-of-sorts. The Mirror would appear at the Queen's request and would give her poetic answers to her questions (rather than saying Snow White, for example, he described her to the Queen). When the Queen asked the huntsman to bring back Snow White's heart in a box, the Mirror was able to identify the heart as the "heart of a pig" and so the Queen left to take care of Snow White herself, leaving what happened to the Magic Mirror after that a mystery.
