Story

Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep

"This χ-blade will open a door―one that leads to all worlds! Then, Keyblade-bearing warriors will flock here from each and every one of them, to battle for the light within Kingdom Hearts! And just like the legend says, the Keyblade War will begin!"
Ventus-Vanitas

Ten years before Sora's first journey, Kingdom Hearts appears blue in the sky above the Keyblade Graveyard, the site of an ancient conflict called the Keyblade War. Keyblade Masters affiliated with both Light and Darkness fought to obtain the legendary χ-blade, a weapon capable of summoning and unlocking Kingdom Hearts. The war affected other worlds before ending with the fallen combatant's Keyblades littering the desolate world and the χ-blade scattered into seven lights and thirteen darknesses. Some time after, an aged Keyblade Master named Master Xehanort saw that the current system of light that resulted from the Keyblade War unbalanced a world order that needed darkness. To that end, Xehanort formulated a plan to recreate the χ-blade to cause another Keyblade War from which a new system of darkness would come into being.

As part of that plan, and to prolong his life, Xehanort needed an ideal vessel with an heart of darkness. Though he intended his apprentice Ventus to be that host, the youth's reluctance forces Xehanort to separate Ventus's darkness to create Vanitas. Though he expected Ventus's not to survived, his survival inspired Xehanort to set up events to create a χ-blade by reintegrating Vanitas back into Ventus once the two are of equal strength. Leaving Ventus in the care of his friend Master Eraqus, who knew of his plan yet thought he abandoned it, Xehanort's search for the vessel led him to Terra.

At first, after manipulation of events, Xehanort's plans worked well, as he set the scene for his dreams to come into fruition. In the end, as Kingdom Hearts appears, Xehanort apparently succeeded in creating the χ-blade by Ventus's forced union with Vanitas and transferring his heart into Terra's body. However, as the χ-blade created by the unification of Ventus and Vanitas was unstable, Terra-Xehanort finds himself facing Terra's Lingering Will and is knocked out become being consumed in the χ-blade's explosion that sends him to Radiant Garden. Though eventually losing his memory, Xehanort entrusted a back-up plan to his co-conspirator Braig as the two become apprentices to Ansem the Wise.

Kingdom Hearts

"Behold the endless abyss! Within it lies the heart of all worlds: Kingdom Hearts! Look as hard as you are able, you'll not find even the smallest glimmer of light. From those dark depths are all hearts born, even yours."

After Radiant Garden's fall, the ruins where taken over by Maleficent who rechristened the castle Hollow Bastion. Having been informed by Master Xehanort during his visit to her world, Maleficent searched for the Seven Princesses of Heart, the maidens that possessed hearts of pure light. When brought together, these princesses would reveal the final keyhole and the way to Kingdom Hearts itself. Thus, Maleficent attacked many worlds with the Heartless in her pursuit of them, and managed to capture six by the time Sora arrived. All the while, Maleficent's progress was overseen by Xehenort's Heartless, Ansem, Seeker of Darkness. After "Ansem" possesses Riku's body, he creates a Keyblade constructed from the hearts of the six other princesses and confirmed the comatose Kairi as the seventh. It would only after Sora sacrificed himself to release Kairi's heart back into her body that the path to Kingdom Hearts finally opened. With Ansem forcing Riku's heart to wander into the darkness, he disappeared into the darkness that poured out from the keyhole on the way to Kingdom Hearts.

After Sora was restored from his Heartless self, he once again went to Hollow Bastion, and sealed the Keyhole made by the princesses, holding off the great darkness. Regardless, Xehanort's Heartless remained a threat, so Sora and company ventured to the End of the World, a place created out of the remains of the worlds taken by the Heartless. There, the Heartless thrived, and beyond it, in the eternal abyss, lay the unlocked door to Kingdom Hearts.

After a long battle, Xehanort's wounded Heartless reached the endless abyss, where the Door to Darkness lay, with the Realm of Darkness and Kingdom Hearts waiting behind it. Ansem forced the door to open, hoping for Kingdom Hearts to fill him with the power of darkness. However, Kingdom Hearts was revealed not to be darkness, but light. The light overwhelmed him, destroying him. But even with his defeat, the darkness that surrounded Kingdom Hearts threatened to overwhelm the Realm of Light. In order to stop the Heartless threat, Sora was forced to close the Door to Darkness, trapping Riku and King Mickey on the other side. Nonetheless, the sealing also restored the destroyed worlds, along with the barriers between them, while preventing billions of Heartless from invading the Realm of Light.

Organization XIII worked to collect Hearts by destroying Heartless, in order to create its own Kingdom Hearts. Xemnas shows the other Organization members how big their Kingdom Hearts is and how close they are to finishing it. Large enough, in fact, that the world can be seen outside the windows of the Castle That Never Was's Grey Room as it slowly grows whilst Roxas and Xion gather hearts. The hearts released by Roxas and Xion's Keyblades wander to Kingdom Hearts.

Kingdom Hearts II

"Hear me, Kingdom Hearts! It seems we must begin anew. Ah, but know this: I will give to you as many hearts as it takes. Mark my words. You can no more be complete without me than I without you. Heed me, Kingdom Hearts! Lend me your power, so that we may be complete! The power to erase the fools that hinder us!"

Maleficent, now revived, seeks out Kingdom Hearts once more as its growth continues following Roxas's defection.

However, Organization XIII wants Kingdom Hearts for an entirely different reason: they want to use its power in order to become whole, for they lead an incomplete existence as Nobodies. To fulfill their goal, Xemnas uses Sora to destroy Heartless and complete Kingdom Hearts. When it is finished, the Organization would be able to become complete once more.

Xemnas merging with his broken Kingdom Hearts as promise to make it complete once again.

This plan is nearly realized until Ansem the Wise attempts to digitize Kingdom Hearts and seal it away with a digital encoder. However, the machine is unable to process something as powerful and unpredictable as Kingdom Hearts, and it explodes, sending Ansem to the Dark Margin and restoring Riku's original form. However, the explosion leaves a giant hole in Kingdom Hearts, causing countless hearts to rain down over the world, becoming Heartless as soon as they touch the surface of the Dark City, with other Nobodies, mainly Dusks, attempting to catch the falling hearts. With Kingdom Hearts damaged, Xemnas needs to start all over again, though the threat of Sora forces him to take drastic action.

In order to gain the power to defeat Sora, Xemnas enters Kingdom Hearts, taking its power. Thankfully, a new door, much like the Door to Darkness, appears, allowing Sora and his companions to enter Kingdom Hearts as well. Xemnas had already absorbed Kingdom Hearts' power, and attempts to use it against his opponents. Though he tries his best, and nearly defeats them, the combined efforts of Sora and his friends bring about his downfall. What ultimately happens to Kingdom Hearts after Xemnas' defeat is unknown.

Trivia

  • According to Nomura in Director's Secret Report XIII, the differing colors of Kingdom Hearts imply the nature of its assemblage. The Kingdom Hearts made by Organization XIII, glowing yellow, was assembled from the "hearts of men", meaning people's hearts were compiled into it. In Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, the χ-blade unlocked Kingdom Hearts from "the hearts of worlds", glowing blue, meaning the hearts of entire worlds were assembled for its creation.
