Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep |
A loving grandmother. Kairi could listen to her story about the light a hundred times and never get bored. |
- "With these fragments of light, children rebuilt the lost world. It's the world we live in now. But the true light sleeps, deep within the darkness. That's why the worlds are still scattered, divided from each other."
- —Kairi's Grandma retelling Kairi the story of light and darkness.
Kairi's Grandma is a resident of Radiant Garden, and the only one of Kairi's relatives that appears in the series. She appears in person in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, and within Kairi's memories in Kingdom Hearts. Both times, she is seen telling her granddaughter the story of light and darkness, the tale of the ancient Keyblade War.
Story
Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep
Kairi's Grandma finds Kairi after Aqua and Mickey save her granddaughter from a swarm of Unversed. As they walk away, Kairi asks her grandmother to tell her favorite story about the light and the darkness, as Aqua listens in the background.
Kingdom Hearts
While in Traverse Town, Sora suddenly experiences one of Kairi's memories—a memory of Kairi's grandmother telling the story of light and darkness while reading in Hollow Bastion's library. After Kairi is rescued and taken to Traverse Town's Underwater Cavern, she tells Sora that there is a deeper meaning to this story, and that it was "more than just a fairy tale".
Other appearances
Kingdom Hearts χ
Kairi's grandmother appears briefly in the opening cutscene as a page of the Book of Prophecies. She is telling the story of light and darkness to Kairi while they are picking flowers, with the story serving as foreshadowing of future events.
Design
Kairi's Grandma is a small, elderly woman with thick, grey hair tied into a bun. She is usually seen smiling pleasantly with her eyes closed, though the few times they are seen open, she is shown to have blue eyes like Kairi. She wears a short sleeved, purple dress with a white apron over it. She also wears a dark cloth tied around her neck (which was maroon in Kingdom Hearts and grey in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep), and a white ring on her left ring finger.
