Appearance
Kairi's grandmother is a small, elderly woman with thick, grey hair tie into a bun. She is usually seen smiling pleasantly with her eyes closed, though the few times they are seen open, she is shown to have blue eyes like Kairi. She wears a sleeveless, purple dress with a white apron overtop it. She also wears a dark cloth tied around her neck, and a white ring on her left ring finger.

Trivia
* One line from the grandmother's story, "Even in the deepest darkness, there will always be light to guide you", is a recurring theme in the Kingdom Hearts series. It could very well be an allusion to Kingdom Hearts, which is situated deep in the Darkness. This line was uttered in different words by Sora, Riku, Naminé and King Mickey. Tetsuya Nomura, according to Director's Secret Report XIII, used this same line for the formation of the final scene of Kingdom Hearts II in Dark Meridian, where the shore was situated in the Realm of In Between whilst the sea was situated in the Realm of Darkness. The Door to Light opening in the water is reminiscent of this line.

*The grandmother's name and history remains in the dark, though she is presumably deceased prior to the events of Kingdom Hearts, as she makes no further appearance in the series and is not mentioned after the first game. But, with the inclusion of her character in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, her name may be released. Also, her presence in the Library of Hollow Bastion may or may not indicate some family connection to Ansem, as it may simply have been that no other suitable place for the storytelling existed at the time of the game's production. Though Kairi's status as a princess may be purely metaphorical, it may hint at her, Ansem, and this woman being related.

—Kairi's Grandma retelling Kairi the story of light and darkness.

Kairi's Grandma is a resident of Radiant Garden, and the only one of Kairi's relatives that appears in the series. She appears in person in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, and within Kairi's memories in Kingdom Hearts. Both times, she is seen telling her granddaughter the story of light and darkness, the tale of the ancient Keyblade War.

Story[edit]

Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep[edit]

Kairi walks with her grandmother while Aqua looks on.

Kairi's Grandma finds Kairi after Aqua and Mickey save her granddaughter from a swarm of Unversed. As they walk away, Kairi asks her grandmother to tell her favorite story about the light and the darkness, as Aqua listens in the background.

Kingdom Hearts[edit]

While in Traverse Town, Sora suddenly experiences one of Kairi's memories—a memory of Kairi's grandmother telling the story of light and darkness while reading in Hollow Bastion's library. After Kairi is rescued and taken to Traverse Town's Underwater Cavern, she tells Sora that there is a deeper meaning to this story, and that it was "more than just a fairy tale".

Other appearances[edit]

Kingdom Hearts χ[edit]

Kairi listens to her grandmother recount the story of light and darkness.

Kairi's grandmother appears briefly in the opening cutscene as a page of the Book of Prophecies. She tells the story of light and darkness to Kairi while they are picking flowers, with the story serving as foreshadowing of future events.

Design[edit]

Kairi's Grandma is a small, elderly woman with thick, grey hair tied into a bun. She is usually seen smiling pleasantly with her eyes closed, though the few times they are seen open, she is shown to have blue eyes like Kairi. She wears a short sleeved, purple dress with a white apron over it. She also wears a dark cloth tied around her neck (which was maroon in Kingdom Hearts and grey in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep), and a white ring on her left ring finger.
