Kiara originates from ''{{w|The Lion King}}'' and its sequel ''{{w|The Lion King II}}''. At the end of the first film, Kiara was born and presented by Rafiki to the kingdom as her parents, Simba and Nala, watched on proudly. In the beginning of the film, as a young cub, Kiara was very playful and adventurous, but was annoyed by an overprotective Simba's warnings to remain in the Pride Lands and to avoid the Outlands. On Simba's behest, Timon and Pumbaa follows her to watch over Kiara's whereabouts. Kiara ventures in the Outlands and meets Kovu, an Outsider and Scar's chosen heir. Initially heeding her father's warning, Kiara was wary of Kovu, but after overcoming a near-death experience from crocodiles by working together, Kiara becomes friends with him. However, their playtime was interrupted when her parents and Kovu's adoptive mother, Zira, arrives and forbids the young cubs from meeting ever again. Simba scolds her for her recklessness and lectures her that as future queen, she must be careful. Kiara's expresses her reluctance to the title, but Simba tells her that that they are one and she will understand someday.

Years later, Kiara prepares for her first hunt. Although Simba promised her that she will be allow to hunt alone, he sends Timon and Pumbaa to watch over. However, Kiara discovers them and dashes out in a fit of rage from her father's broken vow. During the hunt, Kiara is trapped in a wildfire set by Zira's other two children, Vitani and Nuka, but is saved by an adult Kovu. When Kiara comes to, she did not recognize him until he references to their first meeting. Their reunion is cut short by her parents' arrival, who were coming to their daughter's aid. Kovu then asks to join Simba's pride, who refuses the request until Rafiki informs him that Kovu saved Kiara's life. In exchange for the debt, Simba agrees to a trial basis to test Kovu's loyalty, allowing Kovu and Kiara to develop a deep relationship while Kovu teaches her to hunt properly. Soon, with some subtle prodding from Rafiki, the two fall in love. Guilt-stricken, Kovu attempts to tell Kiara Zira's plot to take over the Pride Lands, but was interrupted by Simba, who wishes to speak with Kovu. Later, a worried Kiara witness her injured father's return, shocked to hear that Kovu was involved in the ambush that nearly killed him. Kiara pleads with her father to reconsider Kovu's banishment, leading into a heated argument between the two, causing Kiara to horrify her father by reminding that he could never be like her grandfather, Mufasa. Kiara manages to sneak away from Pride Rock and meets with Kovu, where the two agreed that they must unite their clans. Returning to Pride Lands, Kiara and Kovu break a fight between Simba and Zira. Kiara persuades the clans that they are no different from each other, and convinces the majority to drop the feud. However, Zira attempts to attack Simba, but Kiara leaps to defend him and the two lionesses fall off a cliff. Kiara lands on a safe ledge and tries to save Zira, who is clinging to the side of the cliff. After Zira refuses and slips into the river below to her death, Simba leads Kiara back up the ledge and allows the Outsiders to return to Pride Rock. At the end of the film, Rafiki blesses Kovu and Kiara's union, and they are seen roaring across the lands with Simba and Nala.
