Rage Form is a Formchange in Kingdom Hearts III. It allows the user to harness their anger when at critical health and lash out at enemies with dark attacks.
Story
Kingdom Hearts III
During Sora's final fight against Master Xehanort in Scala ad Caelum, Xehanort uses the power of Kingdom Hearts to steal Sora's light and force him into Rage Form. By attacking Xehanort, Sora eventually regains his light.
Design
Rage Form turns Sora's clothes, skin, and Keyblade deep black, with yellow eyes glowing red, an aura of darkness, and a fluorescent white swirling pattern on his pants. It is similar to Antiform and envelops the Keyblade in darkness for quick and powerful attacks. While Antiform represents Sora overcome by darkness, Rage Form represents Sora's anger.[1]
Rage Form also differs from Dark Form in that the latter is Sora using the power of darkness in a more controlled state, similar to Riku, and thus, Dark Form is not quite as dark as Rage Form, and is therefore a lower-risk Formchange than Rage Form, which is a high-risk, high-reward Formchange by comparison.
While in his Kingdom Hearts II attire, Sora's appearance in Rage Form is identical to Antiform.
Mechanics
Rage Form is a Formchange that has a chance to activate when Sora is at critical health. It has a base duration of 30 seconds and a maximum combo length of 5. Sora cannot switch Keyblades or use magic, items, Shotlocks, and Link Summons in Rage Form, though he can still use Team Attacks, which will revert him to normal. Rage Form's combos are aggressive and swift, and consist of Sora combining darkness-infused Keyblade slashes with scratches and kicks. The combo finisher has Sora surround himself with a barrage of slashes before releasing a burst of darkness from his body. Entering Rage Form will also fully heal Sora, but removes all Situation Commands on standby.
While in Rage Form, Sora can use the Riskcharge Situation Command, unleashing a burst of darkness that damages nearby enemies, extends Rage Form's duration by 3 per use, and raises his Strength by 5 at the cost of depleting half of his remaining health. It also adds additional properties to his combos, such as dark pillars to his normal attacks and dark tendrils to his combo finisher. Every time he uses Riskcharge, Sora will be orbited by an additional red wisp of darkness. The Finish command, which will appear after using Riskcharge three times, has Sora plunge the Keyblade into the ground and submerge the area around him in darkness. Orbs of darkness surround Sora before generating spikes and spinning around, delivering massive damage.
The Rage Form command may appear at or below 25% HP. The odds of the command appearing depend on the remaining HP, with a base chance of 10% at 25% HP, increasing by 1% for each % of HP lost and maxing out at a 34% chance at 1% HP remaining. If Rage Form was previously entered in the battle the odds are reduced by 2/3, with a base probability of roughly 3.33% that maxes out at 11.33% at 1% HP remaining. Certain conditions will prevent the Rage Form command from appearing:
- Sora is using a Team Attack, Attraction, or Link Summon.
- Rage Form has already been entered twice in a given battle.
- It has been within 90 seconds of exiting Rage Form. This timer continues outside of battle.
- Sora is in the final battle against Master Xehanort.
During the final fight against Xehanort, Ascension will force Sora into a version of Rage Form that has no time limit and cannot use Riskcharge. Instead, Sora must attack Xehanort to make him drop orbs of light that can fill the situation meter. Obtaining enough orbs will unlock the Return to the Light Situation Command, in which Sora repeatedly rushes at Xehanort before diving at him and regaining his light.
Abilities
When guarding in Rage Form, Sora will use a shadowy form of Barrier that causes him to back up when successful.
Strategy
Rage Form is the only Formchange available that replenishes Sora's HP upon activation, making it useful when in low health situations. However, as it locks the use of magic, Links, and items, be sure to quickly activate all three Riskcharges when a healing party member such as Donald has sufficient MP, thus ensuring that the most power is gained from Riskcharge while negating the risk of low HP.
Against humanoid foes, Rage Form's combos do not trigger a retaliation from them as quickly from other combos. This means it is possible for Sora to land a nearly full second combo on them before they retaliate.

- ^ Dengeki Playstation Interview; Interviewer: "There's a form that appears called "Rage Form," which reminds us of the "Anti Form" from KH2. What is the setup behind that?" / Tetsuya Nomura: "The forms in this title are very different from that of KH2, so we decided to change all the names. Rage does indeed have characteristics that are reminiscent of Anti, but it's basically a separate thing setup wise. Anti is based on Sora getting completely stained in darkness, but Rage doesn't go quite that far. It's based on him going into a rampage state, controlled by feelings of anger."
