- "Defeat the Heartless in magic duels and prove who is the best Keyblade bearer in the Organization VIII!"
- —Instructions
Kingdom Hearts Magical Puzzle Clash, stylized as Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days Magical Puzzle Clash, was an online flash game released to the Disney website by Square Enix and Disney. It has since been discontinued and is no longer officially accessible. The game was made to promote Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days and is not canon to the series in any way.
There are three playable characters – Roxas, Xion, and Axel – although the gameplay is largely the same regardless of which character is chosen. There is no story to the game, aside from a brief plot summary of Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days: as members of the Organization, Roxas, Xion, and Axel must defeat Heartless and release captured hearts.
Upon clearing the game or losing all three lives, an advertisement for Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days is displayed.
Gameplay
Kingdom Hearts Magical Puzzle Clash is an arcade style puzzle game similar to Bejeweled. There is a 7x7 game board made up of different colored tokens. The goal of the game is to swap two adjacent tokens to form a row of at least three of the same color. After a valid match is made, the tokens disappear, and more fall from above the game board. The game boards start with four different colors of tokens, with two more being added to the player's board as the game progresses. The player is given a score throughout the game based on how many matches are made and how many tokens are cleared.
While the player is matching tokens, an enemy Heartless is making matches in a game board of their own. Each token cleared deals damage to the opponent, depleting their HP. Although normal enemies begin the level with the same amount of HP as the player, the player deals 2HP of damage per token cleared[1], while enemies deal 1HP of damage. To compensate, both sides are given certain special tokens whose powers can give an edge in the match.
There are two types of special tokens: spells and power ups. Which spells and power ups appear is determined by character selection and the current level. Spells cannot be matched; instead, they must be allowed to drop to the bottom row of the game board, where they will be automatically collected (if a spell token is on the sixth row, it can be swapped down to the bottom row to be collected, which counts as a valid move even if no match is made). The player can store up to five types of spells at once; multiple casts of the same spell will stack in the inventory. At any point, a reserved spell can be cast, either inflicting a negative effect on the opponent or negating a negative effect placed on the caster.
Power ups, on the other hand, can be activated anywhere on the game board, even without a proper match. When the player makes matches of four tokens or greater, the Row Destroyer or Crossroad Destroyer power up will spawn at the bottom-rightmost token of the match[2]. Each character's individual power up will naturally spawn if enough of the regular power ups are used.
If the player waits too long without making a match, a pair of adjacent tokens will flash, indicating a possible match. In the event that no matches can be made, there are no power ups on the board, and the player is not under the effect of an enemy spell, "No More Moves" will be declared after a short delay. All tokens on the game board are rearranged, guaranteeing at least one possible match. When this happens, it is possible that spell tokens are placed on the bottom row or that colored tokens are rearranged into rows of three or more (the latter can also happen as a result of the Randomizer spell being cast on the player). In either case, no matches are made and no spells are collected until the player makes their next move, which is carried out regardless of if the swap would usually result in a successful match.
There are five worlds which can be played in: Agrabah, Wonderland, Olympus Coliseum, Neverland, and Beast's Castle. Each world has five levels, for a total of 25. The last level of each world is a boss fight. If the player is defeated a total of three times, the score is reset to zero, but progress through the levels is not lost.
