A piscine horror lurking beneath the crystal waves of The Caribbean.

A glutton for the greedy, it lures prey in by posing as a treasure chest. An unusual adaptation, but it sure worked on Sora…

The Lightning Angler is an Emblem Heartless that appears in Kingdom Hearts III. It acts as a boss in The Caribbean, where the battle takes place underwater.

Story

Kingdom Hearts III

While Sora, Donald, and Goofy are exploring an underwater cave system, Sora spots a treasure chest with two glowing pieces of "kelp" next to it and attempts to open it with the Keyblade, alerting the Lightning Angler that prey has arrived. It springs up and swallows Sora along with the chest, but immediately spits him out due to the Keyblade hurting it.

Upon its defeat, it spits the chest out and crashes into the wall of the chamber, revealing a new path forward into the cavern.

Design

The Lightning Angler is an electric Heartless with the appearance of an anglerfish. It is blue, has electricity patterns spread across its body, and whiskers with lightning bolts at the end. Along with that, at the end of its tail it has what resembles a pirate ship's wheel and other pirate accessories such as hooks and anchors in the design. The aquatic Heartless has blue, spike-esque teeth with a Heartless emblem on the head.

Strategy

Since Sora is underwater during this boss battle, he cannot swap Keyblades or use Formchanges, Shotlocks, Team Attacks, or Link Summons. He still has access to magic and items, and his currently equipped Keyblade should be balanced in Strength and Magic since he can only use physical attacks and magic.

When attacking the Lightning Angler, it is recommended to wait until it stops attacking and then get one combo in at a time while attacking its sides to allow for better reactions to its attacks, which can come suddenly as the Lightning Angler generally will not be staggered by attacks. It will always use the Swing Rush or Bite Rush attacks after using its Thundaga attack, and its Bite Rush attack cannot reduce the health of party members to 0 HP.
