I haven't quite got the fine points down, like...when, or where... It just kinda kicks in whenever it wants to.

Kingdom Hearts IV is the upcoming title in the Kingdom Hearts series. It is part of the Lost Master Arc and was officially announced at the Kingdom Hearts 20th Anniversary event on April 10, 2022.[1]

Development

Kingdom Hearts IV's existence was leaked as part of a list of games on September 12, 2021, when a user was able to access Nvidia cloud gaming service GeForce NOW's internal database.[2] Nvidia would acknowledge the leak list of games, however the games presented in them were speculative titles, used only for internal tracking and testing and not an actual confirmation or announcements of the games. [3]

The game was officially announced at the Kingdom Hearts 20th Anniversary event on April 10, 2022 with a teaser trailer of the game being in development. Following the event, in an interview with famitsu, series director Tetsuya Nomura stated the trailer was rendered in real time in Unreal Engine 4. However, the game's development would be moving to be developed in Unreal Engine 5. Nomura stated that Kingdom Hearts IV takes place after the events of Kingdom Hearts Melody of Memory and world selection is currently in progress. After the conclusion of the Dark Seeker Saga, Nomura was torn between Verum Rex or Kingdom Hearts IV as the next continuation and discussed it with series co-director Yasushi Yasue. In the end, Nomura decided Kingdom Hearts IV to be the next game in development because it'd be difficult to develop two big console games at the same time.[4]
