Master Terra?[edit]
Just because Master Xehanort called Terra a "Master" doesn't make him one, Terra would have to undergo another Mark of Mastery before any master could give him the tittle of Master. LightoftheDarkness 01:06, January 11, 2011 (UTC)
We undid the edit, it was an anon who stated that Terra was an official master. Chitalian8 01:09, January 11, 2011 (UTC)
Terra is actually a master of the keyblade he was only denied the title of a Master because Eraqus feared the dakness in his heart.Xehanort used the power of darkness during his time as a keyblade wielder and he was given the title of master.Terra doesn't have the title because of Eraqus prejuiced. The Dark Master 20:33, January 28, 2011 (UTC)

In a Q & A session with Tetsuya Nomura he stated that Sora is a Keyblade Master: "Q: Sora became a Keyblade Master in KINGDOM HEARTS 3D [Dream Drop Distance]. Like Aqua and the others, their Keyblades have changed?" "A: Yes. During the Mark of Mastery Exam, their Keyblades have already changed." I read it on the ultimania and I was just wondering if it could be trivia worthy or should we include it in the main article

That is completely and utterly false. Sora clearly failed the MoM exam in KH3D.

This interview confirms that Sora is not a Keyblade Master:
• In KINGDOM HEARTS 3D, Sora does not become a Keyblade Master. Because Sora is one of your favorite characters, was it difficult for you to put him in this position or choice due to KINGDOM HEARTS III? And with Kairi, will she and Sora ever achieve the Mark of Mastery?
Nomura : I thought a lot about whether Sora was to become Keyblade Master or not. But because I always wanted Sora to relate to the players, if he became Master, it would have meant he would have really reached a very high level and it is not yet ready for it, and we do not want that to happen. The decision to not make Sora a Keyblade Master was not really difficult, but I thought it was better that he remains an ordinary boy to be closer to the players.

What evidence is there that the symbol warn by Eraqus, Terra, Aqua, and Ventus is the Keyblade Master symbol? Xehanort, Mickey, and Yen Sid are not seen wearing it, Terra and Ventus wear it besides not being Masters, and Aqua wore it before becoming a Master. If anything, I would see it as Being Eraqus's symbol, seeing as only he and his pupils are seen wearing it, it is the token on his Keyblade's Keychain, and Ventus didn't wear it until becoming his apprentice.

Since Xehanort struck out on his own, he could have simply elected to not wear it after becoming a Master. Because Yen Sid "doffed" the mantle of Master he could choose not to wear it as well. Mickey being his apprentice wouldn't wear it either. It's also possible that the Mark of Mastery is a mark exclusive to the Land of Departure and its masters and apprentices.

So basically, there is nothing to say that it is that it is the mark of a Keyblade Master, considering Terra and Ventus wear one despite not being Masters (Ventus hasn't even gotten to the point of taking the test) and Aqua wore it long before she became a Master

Successor[edit]
The Xehanort's Report mentions the "Successor" term in his letter and in VIII. So from this, is the Successor the person in change of Land of Departure, making Aqua the current Successor? TheFifteenthMember 21:27, 14 August 2015 (UTC)
- Yes, if I recall correctly, that's correct. Yen Sid and Xehanort went their separate ways, and the one who remained in the LoD would be tasked with guarding it. Aqua could have had the choice to go her own way or become Successor, but technically, she's done both. LoD fell to darkness before she could bring back Ventus and resume her task of guarding it, which meant her task of Successor involved changing the world to what she wanted it to be, and in her case, it would be to keep Ven safe. TRSNX 21:39, 14 August 2015 (UTC)
Is someone going to add all of the Fortellers, Luxu, and the Master of Masters? They should all be added.69.143.204.123 09:43, 3 February 2017 (UTC)
- This may be a weird question, but do we know for sure that the Master of Masters can wield a Keyblade? He's never seen using one, except when he gives Luxu his Keyblade, and his journal entry doesn't mention it either. TheSilentHero 18:32, 3 February 2017 (UTC)
- According to a Nomura interview that I am FAR to tired to look up right now, he's called the Master of Masters because he is a Keyblade Master, whose disciples are also Keyblade Masters. A Master of other Masters. Rex Ronald Rilander (talk) 03:38, 4 February 2017 (UTC)
- The quote was placed in the code for the No Name (xehanort) at one point, but basically -- the Master explicitly created Keyblades based on the X-blade, we're just not 100% confirmed which ones he wield. With the retcon taking us back from "everyone can wield Keyblades" to the KH1-style "there's a chosen lineage", my money's on him having attuned with the X-blade itself, at least temporarily."We're werewolves, not swearwolves." (KrytenKoro) 14:53, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
- Even if MoM is master of the Keyblade variety, do we have any material confirming Luxu is? The Foretellers' entries in Back Cover state their status explicitly, but Luxu's doesn't. TJF588 (talk) 10:47, 23 February 2017 (UTC)
- In KHX, he's called "Master Luxu" by Chirithy, if I recall correctly."We're werewolves, not swearwolves." (KrytenKoro) 14:48, 23 February 2017 (UTC)
- Master Obviously, SE changed its mind as to what "Keyblade Master" meant by BbS, but this is all retconned in-universe in the Ultimania -- get those citations too. It's unclear if after retcon, the references to "Master Yen Sid" are meant to refer to the Keyblade.
- KH script
- Yuffie: "The Keyblade chooses its master. And it chose you."
- Sora: "Oh, come on! I’m the Keyblade master."
- Goofy: "Oh, and guess what? Sora’s the Keyblade master."
- Riku: "But it all ends here. There can’t be two Keyblade masters."
- Riku: "Let the Keyblade choose...its true master."
- Riku: "It’s up to me. Only the Keyblade master can open the secret door...and change the world."
- Cinderella: "We’ve been waiting for you, Keyblade master."
- Snow White: "We’re counting on you, Keyblade master. In the meantime, we’ll do what we can, too."
- Cinderella: "A worthy answer, Keyblade master. We offer this power to aid your battle."
- Seeker
- Riku: "It is I, Ansem, the seeker of darkness."
- KH journal
- Riku was actually the rightful master of the Keyblade, but once he chose darkness over light, the weapon chose Sora instead.
- Now he must confront Ansem, the seeker of darkness.
- CoM script
- Master
- ????: My show now, Keyblade master. Who am I? Oh, my name's Axel. Got it memorized?
- Axel: Good answer. Just what I'd expect from the Keyblade master. But be forewarned... When your sleeping memories awaken, you may no longer be who you are now.
- Vexen: If you remain bound by the chain of memories and refuse to believe what is truly found inside your heart... ...then throw it away. You are not a Keyblade master---just a slave to twisted memories. Yes... Exactly like my Riku.
- Larxene: Oh, you do get it! Lies, lies, all lies! Just Naminé's illusions, nothing more. Binding you in the chains of your own memory was central to our trap. It makes me tingle to think how easily you were duped. So close to it---we were almost there. This was our only chance to turn the Keyblade master into our puppet, but--- That jerk Axel---he used Naminé to betray us!
- Marluxia: Why let Naminé go? If it weren't for your needless meddling--- We could have turned the Keyblade master to come and serve us.
- Vexen: It seems he desperately wants the Keyblade master for himself--- What a foolish plan, indeed. Sora's is not such an interesting existence. The entity that holds true value---is Riku, the hero of darkness.
- Zexion: The keeper of this castle, Marluxia, has just been felled by the Keyblade master.
- KH2 script
- Master
- Riku: It's up to me. Only the Keyblade master can open the secret door and change the world.

- TWILIGHT THORN: "A giant Nobody who Roxas fought at the Station of Awakening. Although it tried to capture Roxas with its thorns, it was overpowered and defeated by the strength of the Keyblade master."
- Donald and Goofy knew the fellow at the tower entrance - Pete, who was never up to any good. The King had banished him to another dimension, but the sorceress Maleficent freed Pete, who served her now. He was gathering an army of Heartless and had his eye on making a Heartless out of the King's teacher, Master Yen Sid. The tower was overflowing with Heartless. Master Yen Sid was waiting for Sora and his friends when they finally made their way to the top: "Chosen wielder of the Keyblade! You are the key that will open the door to light."
- "All that was left was to set sail in the Gummi ship Master Yen Sid had prepared. If they opened the gates as indicated by the beam of light streaming from the Keyblade, new paths should appear one after the other, connecting the worlds once more. Yes, everything is connected, even hearts that are far apart and out of reach. A new adventure awaits!"
- Seeker
- "My friends' struggle to protect the realm of light from the threat of Heartless is now over, with Xehanort's Heartless - going by the name Ansem, Seeker of Darkness - defeated at last."
- "We had already defeated Xehanort's Heartless in battle once before, when he went by the name "Ansem, Seeker of Darkness." After his defeat, however, he latched on to Riku's heart and began drawing him into the darkness."
- BbS script
- Master
- Aqua: Oh yeah. Terra, you and I have our Mark of Mastery exams tomorrow.
- Eraqus: Today you will be examined for the Mark of Mastery. Not one but two of the Keyblade's chosen stand here as candidates... but this is neither a competition nor a battle for supremacy-- not a test of wills, but a test of heart. Both of you may prevail, or neither. But I am sure our guest, Master Xehanort... did not travel all this way to see our youngest prospects in years fall short of the Mark. I trust you are ready.
- Ven: No way! I've been looking forward to this--seeing you two become Masters. I'm not gonna miss it now!
- Eraqus: We have deliberated and reached a decision. Terra, Aqua, you both performed commendably. However, only Aqua has shown the Mark of Mastery.
- Eraqus: Terra, you failed to keep the darkness within you sufficiently in check. But, there is always next time. That is all. Aqua, as our newest Keyblade Master, you are entitled to certain knowledge. Please wait here for further instruction.
- Xehanort: And yet...how frustrating that Eraqus refutes its power. Why, you could train with him forever and still... you'd never be a Master in his eyes.
- Eraqus: That was my dear old friend Yen Sid. As you know, he is Master no more... but he still keeps a close eye on the tides of light and darkness. His counsel serves as signposts on the road we wielders of the Keyblade must walk. All the more reason, then, for concern--for he tells me the princesses of heart are in danger. Not only from the forces of darkness, as you may assume... but also from a new threat--one that feeds on negativity. Fledgling emotions that have taken monster form--Yen Sid calls them the "Unversed." As wielders of the Keyblade, you are tasked with striking down any who would upset the balance of light and darkness. The Unversed are no exception. I tried to pass this news on to Master Xehanort, but my repeated attempts to reach him have failed. I doubt there is any connection, and yet... This all troubles me.
- Eraqus: You must know, I care for you like my own son. If I could have my way, I would name you Master in a second. But, how can I, when you are so obsessed with power? Terra, you mustn't be afraid of losing. Fear leads to obsession with power, and obsession beckons the darkness.
- Yen Sid: I am no longer a Master. I doffed that mantle.
- Braig: Ha, if I heard the old guy right, you're what they call Keyblade Master material. So if I defeat you, that makes me the real keyslinger, if you catch my drift. Not the most polite way to go about it...but what can you do?
- Braig: Hmph. For a Keyblade Master, you're not very--what's the word--good?
- Xehanort: Master Eraqus, you see, is so afraid of darkness, that he too, has succumbed--not to darkness, but to light. It shines so bright, he forgets that light begets darkness. And Aqua and Ventus, their lights shine too bright. It is only natural that they cast shadows on your heart. Eraqus... He is such a fool! Light and darkness, they are a balance--one that must always be maintained. Terra...you are the one who shows the true Mark of Mastery, but he refuses to see it. And I know why. It is because he fears you. Join me. You and I can do the worlds much greater good, by wielding light and darkness in equal shares.
- Xehanort: Behold... These lifeless keys used to be full of power--united with the hearts of their masters. On this barren soil, Keyblades of light and darkness were locked in combat...as a great Keyblade War raged. Countless Keyblade wielders gave up their lives, all in search of one, ultimate key. And it will soon belong to me...
- Eraqus: You will not heed your Master?
- Terra: In your hand, take this blade. And so long as you have the makings, then through this simple act of taking, it's wielder you shall one day be made. / Aqua: What's THAT about? Who went and made you Master? / Terra: Being a Keyblade Master is all I've dreamed about.
- Ven: Funny... I'd never really thought about it--at least until you asked me. My dream is to become a Keyblade Master.
- Ven: Aqua... Now that you're a Keyblade Master, you've let it go to your head. I'm gonna go find Terra.
- Eraqus: ...and insomuch as you are now Keyblade Master, you must always be conscious of--
- Eraqus: I told Terra this could be a second chance to show the Mark of Mastery...and I meant it. However, that flicker of darkness he displayed during the examination--I can sense it runs very deep. If he were to-- If those powers were to prove too much for him to handle, I want you to bring him back to me at once. It's for his own good. I could not bear to lose any of you to the darkness. / Aqua: Of course. I would never let that happen. I promise you I will bring Terra back. Only this time, you'll see he has what it takes to be a Master.
- Eraqus: Now that you are a Master, there is one secret in particular you must know. Should anything happen to me, and you find the legion of darkness at our doorstep...I ask that you take my Keyblade and use it to lock this land away. / Eraqus: Generations of Keyblade Masters have been charged with keeping this land safe. Light and darkness exist in balance here, and there are those who would abuse such neutral ground. This is why our predecessors devised a certain...trick.
- Yen Sid: There was a time when I walked the path of the Keyblade Master alongside Eraqus and Xehanort. But the three of us have gone our separate ways.

- Master
- Terra, an aspiring Keyblade Master, had been training diligently under Master Eraqus along with his best friends Aqua and Ventus (whom they called Ven). The night before the Mark of Mastery exam that would determine his future, he joined his friends on the summit for one last practice, and received a good luck charm called a "Wayfinder" from Aqua. But during the exam the next day, when he and Aqua fought and she gained the upper hand, part of the darkness within Terra emerged unbidden. The consequences: Aqua passed the exam and was recognized as a true Keyblade Master. Terra, however, was not.
- At the Mark of Mastery exam the next day, Aqua passed the test and was recognized as a true Keyblade Master. But Terra, Master Eraqus decided, was not ready for the same honor.
- Cinderella was delighted with the lovely pink dress they had made for her. She thanked them and got ready to leave for the palace. Dreams do come true, Ven thought, as he remembered his and his friends' own dreams of becoming Keyblade Masters.
- He remembered the talk the three of them had that night. "Being a Keyblade Master is all I've dreamed about," Terra had said. "Well, you're not the only one," replied Aqua. They were all of one mind, working toward a single goal.
- Aqua, an aspiring Keyblade Master, had been training diligently under Master Eraqus along with her best friends Terra and Ventus (whom they called Ven). The night before the Mark of Mastery exam that would determine her future, she joined her friends on the summit for one last practice, and gave Terra and Ven good luck charms called "Wayfinders." The next day, Aqua passed the test and was recognized as a true Keyblade Master. But Terra, Master Eraqus decided, was not ready for the same honor.
- Please accept my deepest gratitude for the invitation to witness your pupils' accession to the office of true Keyblade Master. It was a heavy mantle our Master placed upon your shoulders naming you Successor, but you have nonetheless persevered and raised two Masters yourself. I know it cannot be easy.
- Our Master chose his heir wisely. Ours is a bizarrely ironic task---to watch over the light from the shadows---but in the face of that, the warmth in your heart and unfailing dedication to the light impress me to no end.
- And on the topic of darkness: we must speak of another matter that concerns me, one related to the upcoming ceremony. When I visited several years ago, your pupil Terra drew my attention. His power is immense, to be sure, but within his heart I could see darkness just waiting to be awakened. I know this is none of my business, but I have reservations about welcoming Terra as a true Keyblade Master without taking certain precautions. The traditional examination, perhaps, to see if he has the Mark of Mastery? The choice is yours, and I will humbly respect your decision.
- Upon reflection, my life underwent the most considerable sea-change when I arrived at that place. Yes, it began when I found a Master, and another I would later call my brother---when I found a new home.
- Our Master instructed us to don armor while traveling between worlds, so that we might shield ourselves from the darkness. But there, in the Lanes Between, I could feel the force of it---the power---and from then on, I forwent my armor's "protection." I had been told the darkness would devour me, but what terrors could it possibly hold, so long as I found the strength to control it?
- Eraqus and I did not see eye to eye. I left, and wandered the World. This was perhaps the first time I felt truly free since that day I departed my boyhood home. But free to do what? I had already shown the Mark and become a Keyblade Master---but having been passed over as a Successor, all that remained to me was the road of teacher. Ordinarily, Keyblade Masters take pupils under their wings, malleable minds in which to impress the precepts of the Keyblade wielder and keep our profession alive for generations to come. Was my time drawing to an end, then, after all I had accomplished since casting away the place of my birth? Surely waiting for a quiet death would not do, not when there was still so much I needed to see for myself. Powers help me, I thought, my body is so old...
- We Keyblade Masters have a special gift. We can extract a heart, be it our own or that of another. By continuing this cycle, it is possible to remain in the world of the living forever.
- The time has come. I have received word from Eraqus that his pupils are to become true Keyblade Masters. Terra and Aqua...They will be easy now to lure into the outside world. But Ventus! I will get nowhere without him.
- A young man in training to become a Keyblade Master. He and his fellow pupils Aqua and Ventus share a healthy rivalry and strong bond of friendship.
- The only one of Master Eraqus's pupils to have been recognized as a true Keyblade Master. A healthy rivalry and close friendship bind her and her training mates Terra and Ven together.
- One of the true Keyblade Masters, and also Terra, Aqua, and Ventus's teacher. He has a strong aversion to darkness, and believes it the duty of every Keyblade Master to rid the world of it.
- One of the true Keyblade Masters, and a longtime acquaintance of Master Eraqus. He is connected with the masked boy, and harbors a hidden agenda.
- many references to "Master Xehanort" and "Master Eraqus"
- Successor

- Days journal
- --Secret Report: Axel-- Another mission with Roxas today. Is he seriously my responsibility? At least he's starting to talk like a normal person. Maybe that means his memory's coming back. Still, this kid's supposed to be the Keyblade master's Nobody? I don't see it.
- --Secret Report: Larxene-- Ugh! How DARE they shut me out of monitoring the Keyblade master! And then to send me off to teach that half-baked Nobody basic magic!? I should've had him light ME on fire. It won't be long now, though. Once I'm over at C.O., our plan goes into action. No more playing nanny. Ever.
- --Secret Report: Zexion-- Marluxia has succeeded in leading the Keyblade master to the castle. I sense multiple threads at work, but details on each of the projects are scarce. I suspect some alleged Organization projects are secretly private machinations. Marluxia seems especially suspect.
- --Secret Report: Axel-- The longer you know someone, the less you need to speak in clear terms. Everything gets across with a wink and a nudge, a little reading between the lines... When it comes to what befell our late comrades at Castle Oblivion, ambiguity suits me just fine. But the Keyblade master and Roxas come out and say every little thing that comes to mind. Maybe that's human, or maybe they're just special.
- --Secret Report: Axel-- Xion regained her ability to wield the Keyblade. I don't know how or why. Maybe there's more to the Keyblade master they're not telling me about. I feel like I've been spending more time talking to Roxas and Xion lately than my old friend, Saïx. This has to have been what it was like, friendship.
- Day 9 - Saïx Xion is being monitored. Roxas, meanwhile, has begun his training exercises. It is imperative we keep Xion from having undue contact with Roxas until we are certain it will perform as expected--which will take another 10 days, if Vexen's convictions are to be trusted. As for the Keyblade master, Marluxia will no doubt be keeping an eye on him.
- Day 28 - Axel I've uncovered most of what I need to know about the Replica Program, but where's the other one? I can't find any trace of it. ...Vexen was caught in the middle. Pitiable, but unavoidable. I could not risk his Program falling into their hands. Of greater concern are the traitors. Not the obvious turncoats, but the ones who will get in his and my way. The Keyblade master is not our enemy.
- Day 52 - Axel I've lost track of the Keyblade master and the other intruders. I'm the only one left in the castle. Everybody else has been destroyed. My orders were to end the traitors, but I think by this point, I fit that bill better than anybody. There's one last thing I need to look into while I'm here.
- Day 322 - Xemnas Be they a puppet or the hero's Nobody, we merely need a functional Keyblade master. The details are unimportant. The puppet has developed to a point where the hero of the Keyblade may be entirely redundant. Indeed, perhaps we ought never allow Sora to awaken. He cannot be controlled. He will rise up against us. We must move our agenda ahead with that firmly in mind.

- Mickey: Well, it doesn't matter what he cooks up. Me and Sora, we'll be ready, and Riku, too! / Yen Sid: Yes, they are indeed strong. But...not true Keyblade Masters, like you.
- Yen Sid: Mickey, please summon Sora hither. Riku as well. / Mickey: Of course, but...why? / Yen Sid: To show us the Mark of Mastery.

- As a Keyblade Master, Xehanort had a gift like few others. But such great minds are often plagued by a single great question. What is the essence of the human heart that weakens us, or empowers us? The answer, he believed, would be found in the "Keyblade War." What if the challenges of our past were, in fact, a map to the light and darkness that battles within us all? Xehanort had to know, so he renounced his duties as master and chose the seeker's life. Since then, in many a guise, he has clashed with protectors of the light--Keyblade wielders like yourselves. And mark my words--he will trouble us yet again. We must be ready. Which is why you, Sora and Riku, are to be tested for the mark of a true Keyblade Master. No doubt you fancy yourselves masters already, but it takes years of training. Only a true master can teach you the proper way. Both of you are self-taught Keyblade wielders--an impressive feat. However, the time has come for you to let go of preconceived notions, forget what you know about the Keyblade, and begin your training again with a clean slate.
- Master Xehanort: Yes, he did. That dull, ordinary boy--a Keyblade wielder so unlike any I have ever seen. However, I have not abandoned my ambitions--the seven guardians of light and the thirteen seekers of darkness.
- Yen Sid: One dream is connected to another, which means we must choose in which "Sleeping World" you will begin. I will return you to the Destiny Islands just before they were swallowed by the darkness and plunged into sleep. Once dreams take you, you must let them guide you to the Sleeping Worlds. As there are seven pure lights, there are seven "Sleeping Keyholes." Unlocking these will both grant you new powers, and free the worlds from their wakelessness. Complete this task, and return here safely, and I will name you both...true masters.
- Yen Sid: You must understand, this examination is in no way how the Mark of Mastery is usually found. However, in light of what they must do next...it was a necessity. If Sora and Riku complete their test, by finding the seven doors corresponding to the seven pure lights, they will return home with a new power. At that point, they will both be true masters. However, the dangers make this more trial than test.
- Riku (thinking): This place... Did I finally make it out of the dream? Sora and I have been split up since the start of our journey, because Ansem--no, because Xehanort planned it. And that means...we're a long way off course from the Mark of Mastery exam Yen Sid gave us.
- Yen Sid: In your Mark of Mastery exam, you were to unlock seven Sleeping Keyholes. By doing so, you would awaken those worlds from their prison of slumber, and also acquire the power to free a heart from its sleep. Riku, you unlocked those Keyholes within Sora's dreams. Therefore, it stands to reason that you now have the power to awaken Sora's heart.
- Riku: Look at his face. Sleeping like nothing's wrong--like there's nothing to even worry about. He's always been like that. The three of us would agree to work on the raft, and then this guy would go and take a nap on the beach. You see, it's my job to keep him on his toes. Besides, what kind of Keyblade Master sleeps through his test?
- Yen Sid: More than anything, I am grateful to have you both back from Xehanort's deception unharmed. And I am grateful to Lea, whose spontaneous actions turned the tides. I am also deeply sorry, for failing to percieve the danger and throwing you headlong into a perilous test. This experience has revealed many hidden truths, and we must gird ourselves for the great clash with darkness that lies before us. I believe we need a new Keyblade Master, one with a new kind of power. Sora and Riku, you both deserve the honor. However, one of you braved the realm of sleep again to unlock the final Keyhole and save a friend. Riku, I name you our new true Keyblade Master.

- [Keyblade Masters] Guardians of the balance between light and darkness. Through the "Bequeathing," they choose the next generation of Keyblade wielders, training their bodies and tempering their hearts so that they, too, might one day be Keyblade Masters. While the word "master" might be tossed around, only an existing Keyblade Master can pass on the title and its associated powers. They often elect to test candidates for the Mark of Mastery. Among the Keyblade Masters is one true "Successor" who is tasked with protecting a hallowed ground known as the Land of Departure.
- Sora would require great power to rescue the individuals King Mickey mentioned in his letter and wake them from their sleep, so he agreed to take the Mark of Mastery examination.
- Having welcomed darkness into his heart, was he still worthy of the Keyblade? Riku decided to take the Mark of Mastery examination and find out.
- No sooner had Riku bested the youth than time started to flow again, and Master Xehanort appeared in the highest seat. He told Riku and King Mickey about the "seven guardians of light" and "thirteen seekers of darkness" who were destined to clash and forge the X-blade. They were too late; Master Xehanort's heart was snaking its way toward Sora, and Xemnas and Ansem were barring the way...
- Riku passed the exam. He had shown the Mark of Mastery, and so Yen Sid dubbed him a true Keyblade Master. Sora was happy to see his best friend receive such an honor. Lea, however, was still trying to get the knack of summoning his own Keyblade.
- Arguably the most powerful Keyblade Master in history, and a staunch advocate for a world where light and darkness are equal. In his thirst for knowledge, he allowed his heart to succumb to darkness. While attempting to reproduce the Keyblade War, he was thwarted by three young Keyblade wielders, and his body was seemingly destroyed. However, Keyblade Masters have the power to remove hearts and transfer them to other "vessels." Master Xehanort has leveraged this power of recombination and clashed with Sora under a number of identities.
- Now, he has agreed to take the Mark of Mastery examination in order to retrieve a new power.
- Now, he is braving the Mark of Mastery examination to find out if he is still worthy of the Keyblade.
- The king of Disney Castle and one of the Keyblade Masters. He was among the first to notice something amiss in the worlds and take action. Mickey watches over Sora and Riku anxiously as they complete the Mark of Mastery exam.

- Right now he, the king, and Donald are keeping an eye on Sora and Riku as they take the Mark of Mastery exam.
- With a new threat looming ever closer, he has decided Sora and Riku must be examined for the Mark of Mastery.
- Several years passed, and Ventus forgot what had happened. He had found a new home in the Land of Departure, a sacred ground defended by a long line of Keyblade Masters. There, he met two other youths named Aqua and Terra, and together they trained with Master Eraqus to become Keyblade Masters. Both Aqua and Terra should have been named Keyblade Masters, but Master Xehanort intervened, convincing Eraqus to test his pupils with a "Mark of Mastery" examination. While Aqua passed the test, Terra did not, creating a rift between him and his friends.

- Phantom Aqua: Are you really worthy of being a Keyblade Master? Is there any point in continuing this fight? You'll never see the realm of light again. Your bonds of friendship only tie you down. Just let go of everything and fade into the darkness.
- Yen Sid: Your Mark of Mastery exam was conducted in the hopes you would acquire the power to wake them.
- But first, you must regain all the strength you have lost. Perhaps it is foolish to expect a complete recovery, but it is absolutely vital you perfect one power--the power of waking, which you failed to master during your exam.
