The Wayward Wind is the default form of Ventus's Keyblade which appears in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep. Fresh Breeze is a notably peculiar Keyblade, with the hilt and guard positioned off the shaft, rather than aligned with it. The shaft, head and teeth are dark grey and have golden lines embedded into it; three just above the guard and one curving around the base. The shaft itself is rounded and becomes thicker around the guard. The teeth are more mechanical, resembling the teeth of Two Become One, and the hilt and guard resembles that of the Kingdom Key, which may have a connection between Ventus, Sora, and Roxas. The keychain is made up of figure-8 links and the charm appears as two feathers swirling around a green sphere.

Due to its unique construction, Fresh Breeze is designed to be wielded in reverse. It should be noted that in the secret movie, he held the Keyblade teeth-forward, but recent videos have shown him using the blunt side. This is due to the recent re-design, relocating the hilt and guard to the same side as the teeth.

Due to a late development change, the final design of the Wayward Wind differs from most of its depictions; although the teeth and the hilt are on the same side in the game and on the boxart, they are on opposite sides in Ventus's concept artwork, in his D-Link icon, and in the Birth by Sleep video. In Deep Space, Ventus is shown to be riding a board with similar properties as Fresh Breeze while wearing his armor shown in "Birth by sleep". It is later revealed that Ven can turn Fresh Breeze into a skateboard and ride it to other worlds like a Gummi Ship.
The Wayward Wind's English and Japanese names, as well as certain aspects of its design, reference Ventus's name, which means "wind" in Latin. "Wayward Wind" may also reference how Ventus runs away from the Land of Departure.

* The skateboard-style riding of Fresh Breeze may imply a further connection between Ventus and Roxas, as Roxas frequently used a skateboard while in Twilight Town. (Sora is also seen to know how to use a skateboard in Kingdom Hearts II.)

* The keychain on Fresh Breeze appears as blowing wind in a conical shape. This is notable as Ventus means "Wind" in Latin. The same can be said of Aqua's water-themed keychain (Aqua meaning "Water") and Terra's earth-themed keychain (Terra meaning "Earth").

The Wayward Wind is the default form of Ventus's Keyblade which appears in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep. Like most Keyblades in the series, it is a Keyblade of the Realm of Light.[citation needed] Ventus uses this Keychain in order to form his Keyblade Glider.

Design[edit]

Wayward Wind is a peculiar Keyblade that is designed to be easily wielded in reverse. The black handle is offset from the Keyblade as opposed to being aligned with it, and the guard is equally misaligned. The guard is a dull gold color and joins with the shaft of the Keyblade to fully enclose the handle. The shaft is grey, thin, and has a very slight curve outward. There are three thin, dull gold lines that decorate the middle of the shaft. Two short bars connect the main blade to the teeth. The Wayward Wind's teeth are grey like the blade and have a wing-like shape. They are comprised by five curved bars that decrease in size the lower they are on the Keyblade. The Keychain token is a green gem with two silver flurries of wind spiraling around it.

Due to a late development change, the final design of the Wayward Wind differs from most of its depictions; although the teeth and the hilt are on the same side in the game and on the boxart, they are on opposite sides in Ventus's concept artwork, in his D-Link icon, and in the Birth by Sleep video. In particular, the Wayward Wind's design in the video was significantly simpler. In addition to the location of the teeth, the Keyblade was also much less smooth and more block-like, appeared more rusted and faded, and did not have a clearly defined color scheme. The gold tone of the handle simply faded into the dull silver tone of the rest of the weapon. It also lacked a Keychain.

The Wayward Wind's English and Japanese names, as well as certain aspects of its design, reference Ventus's name, which means "wind" in Latin. "Wayward Wind" may also reference how Ventus runs away from the Land of Departure.
