The Body gives the heart and soul a vessel to live in, giving a person a physical appearance and a form.
The heart controls the body, much like the brain in the real world, so when someone becomes a Heartless or otherwise loses their heart, their body and soul usually wither away to nil. However, if that person's heart is strong enough, their soul will take control of the now empty body, which will start to act on its own, becoming a being called a "Nobody."
When someone becomes a Heartless, they leave behind their body and their soul, a shell. Usually, the body/soul fades away. These shells become Nobodies however, if that person's heart was strong enough. If the heart of a person is strong, their shell becomes strong also, in longing for a heart, with the body giving the Nobody form.

It should be noted that the empty shell that becomes a Nobody is actually a combination of the body and the soul. It is presumed that when a person dies, it is the body without the soul.
While the heart is the deciding factor as to whether or not a person can wield the Keyblade, the body can be used in a loophole for acquiring the Keyblade, as seen with Ansem, Seeker of Darkness and Riku in Kingdom Hearts. Ansem possesses Riku's body, thereby controlling his heart and giving him access to Riku's Keyblade-wielding powers.

It should be noted that the body is one of the three things that make up existence of a living being. The other two are the 'heart' and the 'soul'.
Should a Keyblade wielder discard their body to transfer their heart into a new vessel, it vanishes from existence. It will return after the destruction of the Heartless and Nobody that comes from the vessel, as is the case for Xehanort. Because he wasn't able to absorb Terra's heart into his own, Xehanort is revived as his older self, instead of as Terra-Xehanort, the body that actually split into Ansem and Xemnas. Through unknown means, Luxu can completely dominate his new host, making the body his own permanently.

KH series
A Body can become complete on one of two conditions. The first is to  meet up with the heart that has created a new body (Special to Sora and Kairi) and willingly join to it. The other way is to call forth Kingdom Hearts, the entity of all living things, that would have the power to giva a body back it's heart. This was the goal of Organization XIII for the entire length of Kingdom Hearts II

A Nobody, a body with no heart.

The body (肉体 nikutai?) is a recurring factor and philosophy in the Kingdom Hearts series; along with the heart and soul, it is a part vital to the complete existence of any living thing. The body gives the heart and soul a vessel, granting a person a physical appearance and form. The body is a medium for a person's heart and feelings to be expressed in the physical world.
