Opening
The awesome opening you just witnessed is a recap of the original Kingdom Hearts game and its GBA sequel Chain of Memories. If you played trough those games you will recognize everything that happens in it. If not ask yourself why you are playing this games first instead of the other two.
Now after that begins the games, to be more specific. THE TUTORIAL!
Roxas
Roxas |
SPOILERS STARTS HERE: READ AT OWN RISK! Roxas is the Nobody of Kingdom Hearts protagonist Sora but thankfully did not get his lame fashion sense, which was apparently inspired by Mickey Mouse himself... Roxas was created when Sora stabbed himself with the Dark Keyblade to release Kairi's heart but at the same time his own which led to his creation along with a fellow Nobody, Naminé. SPOILER ENDS HERE Roxas's story which begins as soon as he is born actually starts in Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days and his two friends. But this is KHII and happens just a few days after 358/2 and I really should not be saying much more soooo... Personality wise Roxas is a somewhat generic happy go-lucky protagonist but as you will find out inside Roxas's head it's not all sunshine and rainbows, prepare for the angst Square Enix oh so proudly has been dishing out in its character in the past years. Roxas happens to be one of my two favorite KH characters so I will be mentioning his greatness every 10 lines.... well, not really. While playing as Roxas you will have a limited amount of abilities and commands to use. But stat and gameplay wise you can get by, Roxas will have all around good stats but early in the game that is of no concern. He hit's hard enough to get the job done even with his basic combos, magic is unavailable so his magic stat is useless and if you play correctly you will forget there is a defense stat. Overall I think most people will like Roxas, enjoy using him while you can. |
Day 1: The _____ Thieves
So we meet Roxas's friends Hayner, Pence and Olette, apparently pictures have been stolen around Twilight Town and a character named Seifer a character from FFVIII is blaming our Klepto Club (name by Hayner) for all the thievery. Roxas decides they should find the real thieves. Pence finds out that their _______ are gone along with the word _____ - yeah, that makes a lot of sense.
Anyway continuing on... now you have control of Roxas so walk to the store right in front of you and talk to the clerk. Then you have to go to the accessory shop, finally go to what looks like a candy shop in the middle of the place, the old lady will ask you to find her cat. Simply press which activates Lock On to find it, Lock On is perhaps one of the most important aspect of combat in Kingdom Hearts as it allows you to see where your enemy is at all times.
After that our little club goes to the Sandlot to confront Seifer. Once the cutscene is over you get a choice of three weapons: the Struggle Wand, Struggle Guard Bat and the Struggle Bat.
Depending on which you chose you get a 1+ to a stat, so if you want to be more powerful in magic even though you don't have any, pick the wand. If you simply want defense pick the guard bat. And if you want attack power chose the Bat. I personally chose the bat as I have always as I use magic rarely and defense can sometimes be completely useless if you know how to avoid every single attack the enemy your are fighting has, more on that later.
Now you learn the battle mechanics. Simply press the while on the Attack command three times for a combo. After the combo you will enter a real boss battle with Seifer. It's BOSS BATTLE TIME!!
Seifer Boss Battle
Boss Battle : Seifer |
Seifer is always on his guard. His normal stance is guarded, so when you hit him you'll be deflected. However, if you continue to hit him immediately after he lets down his guard (which is once you've hit him the first time), you can chain at least three attacks. Seifer's main attacks are a basic slash and spin attack. Both are easy to parry, so attack when you have the chance. You should easily be able to deflect his attack and return with a combo. After several combos, he is likely to jump high into the air, saying "Isn't this romantic?". He will then come down with his bat outward. The best way to avoid this is to run toward him, as the attack has limited range. You can also simply walk behind him as he descends, so his attack passes right over you without danger of being hit. Do not jump into the air whilst Seifer is performing this move, because he will hit you and send you flying regardless of whether you are parrying or not. The only way to recover from this is by using the Aerial Recovery technique which you currently don't have. If you'd like a foolproof method, just run to the side when he comes at you with his bat - you're bound to avoid him, and you can always leave him open for battle. |
More photo thieves...
After the battle a circus freak in a white jumpsuit will steal a photo from Pence which he took of Roxas after defeating Seifer. Follow the freak to the woods all the way to the Mansion on the other side of the woods. The freak will be standing there wiggling around in an strange way; press to enable a cutscene. Seems you have to fight this mysterious creature. Try using the reaction command (Reversal) against it, attack and dodge. You know the pattern: if he walks in the air, watch out! If you hit him thrice and he lunges at you, jump to evade the attack, and you're well on your way.
After a little while another cutscene will come and your Struggle weapon will turn into a weapon called the Keyblade in a very matrix like fashion! Now you can actually hit the circus freak until it releases quite some amount of munny for that enemy's kind (not like they drop munny anyway). After the battle you find all the stolen pictures and Pence notices that they all have Roxas in it, showing how popular he is... although there is one I would like to burn.
Day 2: Minimum Wage
One identity confusion with Sora and Roxas later...watch a cutscene with a man with the red bandages again and the guy in the Black Coat.
After another batch of fresh dreams of a kid in big dorky clown shoes, a talking duck and a ....dog?? Along with Squall/Leon Seifer's rival from FFVIII, Aerith and Yuffie from FFVII and the Keyhole??? Roxas wakes up muttering to himself showing some confusion other than Sora's mindless gibberish so far.
Roxas goes to the Usual Spot to meet up with the club... oh and they are going to the beach. On the suggestion of self-proclaimed genius Hayenr the club decides to get jobs...no wait YOU have to get a job.
We need about 800 munny each to go to the beach and get some pretzels. We need to do some odd jobs to get the munny. There are six odd jobs but I only use two: Mail Delivery and Poster Duty...hehe, duty.
The Mail Delivery for me at least takes about 10 seconds and gives me 50 munny but the Poster Duty takes me a minute and gives me 100 munny so its about 6x times more time then Mail Delivery for 2x as much munny you do the math (oh wait...damn it) although you should try all six jobs to see which one you like. You can also skip this but we get an extra AP or 2 (if you get 1000+) for doing this so start working until your palms are bleeding.
There are in total 6 jobs and I recommend you try each one to see if you perhaps like one, some are tedious, boring, quick, rewarding or not. But if you want an easy way out of this just check the formula above.
After about 2 minutes and 40 seconds - 8 minutes later you can go to the Station Heights and talk to Hayner to get your AP boost and to get a cutscene to find out from Olette that we have 5000 munny (no)thanks to these guys.
Inside we find out that apparently Roxas lost the 5k we made, I wonder how?
Now the scene switches to the man in red robes named DiZ and the mysterious man in the black cloak, and look that guy took our money, I wanna kick him in the nuts! DiZ seemed to mention some "enemy" but lets not worry about that.
Day 3
Yet another freaky dream goes by in Roxas's mind but this time with DISNEY characters (yay Disney, I love Disney). And then yet again the scene flashes to DiZ for a few seconds and then to a girl so close to being albino - I could see her from 10 miles away she's shining so bright. Roxas also has a weird morning there.
Back at the Usual Spot there is a note from Hayner telling Roxas to go to the Station Heights.
On the way we run into Pence and Olette who then suddenly freeze up (Freeze Count: 1) in the middle of walking and that blond girl appears again for a tiny bit, we do find out her name tough. As Naminé walks away time starts anew and Pence and Olette start walking and talking again. Hmm we are supposed to go the Station Heights? But just for fun lets follow Naminé to the forest shall we? But once again we are attacked, Roxas runs to the Sandlot and meets Seifer and gang. The freaks followed us and Roxas, Seifer, Rai and Fu fight the freaks while Vivi runs away.
This is just like the battle back at the mansion as in you can't damage your enemy in anyway, so just dodge and run until Roxas finds that its no use and suddenly time freezes again (Freeze Count: 2) and Roxas is warped to some strange place with creepy opera.
The Opera creepers
As I said last time we suddenly arrive in a creepy dark place with a Very familiar opera hmmm must be my imagination.
Yet again a familiar scene. A sword, a shield and a staff with hidden mickey's are floating in the air and you have to pick one. This is like the struggle bat dilemma back in Day 1 but has a deeper meaning. If you want to gain combat-improving abilities and just strength overall chose the sword. Want support abilities, pick the shield. Want to have powerful magic and magic boost abilities pick the staff. Since I rarely use magic and like to stick to attacking like a madman I of course picked the sword put you are free to chose what you want.
When you have chosen your weapon it transforms into the Keyblade but not like at the mansion this time it appears in a stream of light. Now you may or may not have noticed but there were circus freaks wiggling around in the background while you were deciding your weapon who now will walk up to you begging to get they're ass's kicked. This is simply the battle with the first circus freak plus 2 more. It should not be hard just stay alert always use Reversal and hit them with your Keyblade.
Once that annoyance is over a chest will appear again in a stream of light. Go to it and stare at it hard for 5 minutes and it will burst into flames.....well not really just open it and get the first Potion of the game.
Since that is done with a very familiar and sinister door appears yet again in a stream of light. Simply go trough it to appear at...the same place no wait this time there are pillars and a Multi-color road. Now during the way up the pillars more circus freaks will appear and attack you. Either run past them or fight them I recommend fighting them to get the EXP from them it, should not be hard as they only appear in a group of three but you might need to use a Potion this isn't just one battle. Along the way you find a chest with a Potion, open it.
If you are lucky, after defeating a circus freak it might drop a Potion, in this game enemies randomly drop items, they don't all drop the same ones or in the same frequency which makes hunting for certain items in the future a long task.
Another door is at the last pillar go trough it.
A cutscene ensues and a giant circus freak appears but it has a somewhat different look and...a scarf. Anyway this is our SECOND boss battle. DING DING DING BOOOOOSS BATTLE TIIIIIME!!!!
Twilg...giant circus freak
Boss Battle : Giant Circus Freak |
Be ready this battle is somewhat hard and you might lose if you are on easy you will lose 1-2 times in standard and you will lose 5-15 times in proud (if you are new of course). Only attack its head, as that is the only weak point. It begins by tossing Roxas into the air to hurt him - use the Reaction Commands at the right time - Key Counter and Lunarsault in particular. Then follow up with Break Raid, when on the ground do a combo. It will get up and begin to spam Tendrils of Darkness. Many of circus freak's attacks can be reflected. When it fires thorns use the Reaction Command, Reversal to get close to attack. But if it continuously fires thorns, even if you are close to its head, prioritize safety. Keep on using Reversal until it is safe to attack. The circus freak has a tendency to shift its shape, and sometimes you may see it upside down. Again, it will fire thorns. Keep on using Reversal, then attack his head twice and begin avoiding again. When on low health it will summon Creepers (this time its the actual name the game developers gave it, it fits so I'm leaving it unchanged) to fight. Avoid the Creepers and continue to attack but if you can try to kill 1 or 2 for the extra EXP.
