Monstro is a sperm whale from Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Final Mix, and Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, and Disney's 1940 animated film, Pinocchio.

Monstro is a unique character in that in his first two appearances, he is not only a character, but also a "world".

Story

Kingdom Hearts

After the destruction of Monstro's homeworld, Monstro is left wandering the Lanes Between. At some point, Monstro swallows Geppetto, and later swallows Pinocchio.

While Sora, Donald, and Goofy are flying away from Agrabah towards their next destination, they encounter a whale in the way of their Gummi path. Jiminy Cricket recognizes the whale as Monstro. The group tries to avoid Monstro, but do not make it out of the way in time, and are swallowed whole by the giant whale.

After much commotion goes on inside Monstro, the whale spits out the Gummi ship containing Sora and friends, while Pinocchio and Geppetto leave later through unknown means.

Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories

A memory-based version of Monstro appears in Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, although only the inside of Monstro is shown. Sora, Donald, and Goofy fight several Shadow Heartless inside Monstro, as per Pinocchio's suggestion that a big enough struggle will cause Monstro to sneeze.

A simulation of Monstro can be fought within the "Monster of the Sea" battle in the Mirage Arena, in a digital copy of his homeworld.

Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance

Monstro is slated to return in the upcoming Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, in his homeworld Prankster's Paradise. He was briefly shown in the Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance Jump Festa trailer, swallowing Pinocchio and Jiminy. Riku has been shown battling a Dream Eater boss inside Monstro's belly, so it is possible Monstro will once again be playable in.

Appearance

Monstro is a gigantic sperm whale. He is blue and has a large row of teeth.

Origin

Monstro first appeared in Disney's 1940 film Pinocchio, which is based on the story The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi. Monstro is a sea creature feared by not only those in the water, but also those on land. Monstro swallows Geppetto and his pets, and later swallows Pinocchio while he is searching for Geppetto. Pinocchio finds a way to make Monstro sneeze, releasing Pinocchio and company. Monstro is enraged, and attempts to chase them. However, he fails and smashes into giant cliff. Monstro's fate is unknown at the end of the movie.

In the original novel, Monstro is called the Terrible Dogfish, and is a great white shark rather than a sperm whale.
