Since mobile viewing is less than the preferable way to see the site, we have the following message at the top of the main page:
Welcome to the KHWiki's mobile port! To browse the Wiki in its entirety with all features enabled, visit the desktop site.
The question is should we make this message appear on all pages through a site notice (for mobiles only). This would reach people who enter the site through a specific google search and other sorts of links. Thoughts?

I'm not sure how that might work. Personally, I do half of my internet browsing through a tablet, which by default would trigger most mobile sites. (I prefer desktop sites on the tablet, but that's just me.) Trouble is, a number of us who are seasoned enough to know which link goes where, would type the link directly into the browser.
It's a bit of a mixed bag... I feel fine if it were to go straight to desktop mode by me typing direct links, but others might not feel the same way.

As someone who browses the wiki on his phone sometimes, like now for example, I think the message would take too much space. I personally don't visit the Main Page that often, so I don't think the message will be seen a lot there. If possible, a pop-up message could work, like the ones that slide in from the bottom of the screen and disappear after a few seconds. And I think this will not be possible, but it would be really useful if registered users could turn off the message.

Currently, the wiki is automatically set to mobile view on mobiles. The problem is the mobile view is quite a clunky way to view the wiki and I think most people would prefer using desktop (if they're anything like me and you). Personally, I have experiences on mobile sites where I really want to use the desktop version (because it's just better) but finding the desktop link is a long-winded process and sometimes I lose my patience and give up on the site.
The site message would get this link across to everyone instantly, no matter what article they came in from. Also, to answer TSH's query, I presume site notices will be able to be dismissed like they are on desktop.

Can we test it? I have not spent enough time on the mobile site to know about how the site notices are affected.

Thanks to Porple, we've run a mobile site message test which you can see here. It takes up little space (a lot less than the banners other sites have at their tops...) so I advocate for it to stay. Others?

Looks fine to me. I dismissed it on my phone and it's not coming back, even if I go to another site and back. I haven't been able to check this myself, but when you click the link, will you go back to the page you were on or the Main Page?

Good question, it goes to the main page but I think that can be fixed. Isn't there a template that inserts the name of the page? It's something along the lines of {{PAGENAME}} but I can't find it.

It is {{PAGENAME}}. Also, should we have a reverse link (from desktop mode to mobile)?

Oh right! Do we have a template that also includes the namespace of the article too? {{PAGENAME}} does not, so for example Forum:Mobile Site Message only becomes "Mobile Site Message".
Also, there are links at the bottom to change view.

I gave it a go originally (and the extra E formats the page name as a URL) but it didn't work due to caching. It took me to MediaWiki:Sitenotice every time. --Porplemontage (talk) 02:15, 16 May 2015 (UTC)

Correct. The difference is that the footer is generated on each page load by the theme and the site notice content is saved once you save MediaWiki:Sitenotice. --Porplemontage (talk) 20:05, 18 May 2015 (UTC)

If that's the case, do we want to keep the site notice, knowing that the link may prove a hindrance, or should we scrap it and possibly look down other avenues? I'm wondering whether it'll be possible to add the Desktop link to the collapsed, tap-in sidebar, which is slightly bare at the moment. Thoughts crew?

Ok, I got the site notice and link working as originally intended by incorporating it into the skin. I hid it for logged-in users since I figured the notice is really for new visitors but I can make it permanent or dismissible for logged-in users as well (the dismiss link made it look worse). --Porplemontage (talk) 23:43, 18 May 2015 (UTC)
