"Sanctuary" is the theme song of Kingdom Hearts II and Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, and is used as the ending theme in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. It's also kingdom hearts melody of memories. It is sung and written by Utada Hikaru. Its Japanese counterpart is called "Passion", and it reached #2 in the Oricon Singles Chart in 2006.

Composition

Both versions of the song contain reversed lyrics, voiced by Utada herself. The reversed lyrics are in English in both versions. They include; "My heart's a battleground" which is played in English even in the Japanese version of the song. The reversed portion of the songs are "I need more affection than you know"; in the "battleground" section, "So many ups and downs" and "I need true emotions" are the two other examples of the reversed lyrics.

Variations

"Passion" is the original, Japanese version of "Sanctuary"; it was originally released on Utada's Ultra Blue album. "Sanctuary (Opening)" was released on the album This Is the One as a bonus track.

At the end of Kingdom Hearts II, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, and Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, two different versions called "Sanctuary (Ending)" (English) and "Passion ~after the battle~" (Japanese), are used. These versions are much quieter for most of the song until the ending part of it, which use a faster instrumental than the rest of the song.

There is an instrumental version of the song that is used for the menu trailer of Kingdom Hearts II called "Passion -KINGDOM Orchestra Instrumental Version-".

Lyrics

In you and I there's a new land
Angels in flight
A sanctuary, my sanctuary, yeah
Where fears and lies melt away
Music will tie
What's left of me, what's left of me now
I watch you fast asleep
All I fear means nothing
In you and I there's a new land
Angels in flight
A sanctuary, my sanctuary, yeah
Where fears and lies melt away
Music will tie
What's left of me, what's left of me
So many ups and downs
My heart's a battleground
You show me how to see that nothing is whole and
nothing is broken
In you and I there's a new land
Angels in flight
A sanctuary, my sanctuary, yeah
Where fears and lies melt away
Music will tie
What's left of me, what's left of me now
My heart's a battleground
二度と会えぬ人に場所に
窓を開ける
思い出せば遥か遥か
未来はどこまでも輝いてた
きれいな青空の下で
僕らはいつまでも眠っていた
Omoidaseba haruka haruka
Mirai wa doko made mo kagayai teta
Kireina aozora no shita de
Bokura wa sukoshi dake obiete ita
Natsukashī iro ni mado ga somaru
Mae o mui tereba mata aemasu ka
Mirai wa doko e demo tsudzui teru nda
Ōkina kanban no shita de
Jidai no utsuroi o mite itai na
Hitoshirezu
My heart's a battleground
Nidoto aenu hito ni basho ni
Madowoakeru
Omoidaseba haruka haruka
Mirai wa doko made mo kagayai teta
Kireina aozora no shita de
Bokura wa itsu made mo nemutte ita
When I remember far far back
The future was bright for as far as I can see
Underneath the beautiful blue sky
We were a little afraid
The windows are becoming stained with a nostalgic color
If I face forward will I meet you again?
The future continues on and on
Underneath a large signboard
I want to watch as the times change
Hidden
My heart's a battleground
I open the window
To those people and places I can never go to
When I remember far far back
The future was bright for as far as I can see
Underneath the beautiful blue sky
We would keep sleeping

Underneath the beautiful blue sky
We would keep sleeping
Someone I liked a long time ago
It seems that a child will be born in winter
The rules from the old days
Sometimes I want to doubt
I've never forgotten
Is the New Year's card with a photo?
What we couldn't do
I miss you very much
