Forum:Shifts
We need shifts for the admins. At these times, almost all admins aren't available, save for Maggosh and Kryten, they did appear at these times but not most of the times. And at these times, we are vulnerable to vandals. Last night there's a UC that vandalizes about 5 of our articles, luckily me, Sovereign, and Organization13 is present to stop him/her and give him/her 3 warnings. So please, we need an admin that is active at these times, we either do shifts or make someone reliable an admin. What mattered most was remembered least 13:24, December 20, 2010 (UTC)
- While it takes an admin to block users, everyone else is perfectly capable of reverting vandalism, issuing warnings, and in the case that they don't stop, leave us admins messages so that we can deal with it when we get back online. It isn't necessary for us to be here 24/7, and it's not really realistic to expect it, since life tends to get in the way. What was the vandalism? --Neumannz, The Dark Falcon 17:23, December 20, 2010 (UTC)
- I think what he means is there should be an admin present at all times in case a vandal did not acknowledge warnings, and just continued to vandalize pages. Sure, they can revert them all they want, but that gets tiring after a while. I don't necessarily think that we need shifts, but I do think it might be a good idea to take some sort of precaution against surprise vandal attacks. (Not that I really have any ideas for it). -- 17:29, December 20, 2010 (UTC)
- An admin using the recent changes can monitor all edits in at least the last 24 hours. For the time being, I show up here every day, or at least often enough to cover every single edit, so shifts are not necessary."We're werewolves, not swearwolves." (KrytenKoro) 17:32, December 20, 2010 (UTC)
- Like Kryten said, we have reliable admins and/or mods on all the time. DTN, Neumannz, Maggosh, Kryten... I think we're good. Not to mention regular users can undo edits, too. --Ag (Silver) - 47 107.8682 amu ~Crono 17:37, December 20, 2010 (UTC)
Also, making someone an admin just to revert edits? That's like making someone a commander just to clean the barracks. That's more of a moderator thing.. Chitalian8 17:39, December 20, 2010 (UTC)
Oh, right, not admins, more like a moderator, huh? Sorry. And I don't mean a mod that stays up 24/7, what I mean is someone that is... online at those times before. And JFH is right, other than tiring, what if the UC decided to ignore the warnings? What if he/she continues to vandalize the pages until most of the active users gave up? What I'm saying is, we need someone that is able to block users at the times when most of you are at school or doing something. Only few of us are from Asia and we're normal users. TNE is no longer in Malaysia, too, so we're pretty much vulnerable at those times mentioned. But if you guys think we don't need any changes, then it's okay, it was just a suggestion. - Even if this actually manages to pass it wouldn't work for long, we would soon see "could you cover me for this day" etc. and then the system collapses. --Sove 20:20, December 20, 2010 (UTC)
- I'm here everyday too, albeit a day here and there, maybe one a month. Neumannz, Kryten, and myself are all able to handle bans pretty well over our time schedule. In addition, Azul81677 is a frequent IRC-goer who can be queried for administrative purposes. Also, what is this call for shifts? Has there been a spike of vandalism? Has a new game been released that causes a lot of false or misnomer information to appear on the wiki? No to neither of these. I've hardly had to ban any users at all, aside from a certain ten sockpuppets. Besides that, I can't remember the last time I had to ban someone.
- Also, forcing admins to only work certain shifts? That's preposterous and could never be organized to prevent the other admins from working during those shifts. It seems to me these "times of weaknesses" in our schedules are also times when editing goes down as well, so the wiki is not in an incredible, or perhaps even noteworthy amount of danger during the absence of admins because that we need to sleep.
- Next time there is a vandalism emergency and now admins, you can kindly contact Wikia in a multitude of ways, one of the best being #wikia on the IRC. Talk pages messages for Wikia staff also work. Therefore, your problem is solved; you do always have an admin, because you can always contact Wikia, who have universal bureaucrat rights. --DTN 22:11, December 20, 2010 (UTC)
- Everyone, stop. The Wiki has had two (count 'em) TWO staff elections this year with IRC/Wiki talk about an election at least ten times this year. Also, look at this. You guys see what I'm seeing? Nine active admins, five moderators, and six inactive/retired admins; the problem isn't the amount of staff. Now, I ask all of you, to please be patient with the staff. Yes, we are not always on as often as you (or ourselves, for that matter) would like to be, but that does not mean we don't check in on this place; we might not edit, but I promise you, we watch over the Wiki. Even in my inactivity, I check this place at least four times a week . Like I said here, this season is one most of us fill with down time with close friends and relatives, and lazy days. But, regardless of who's on, a staff member or a non-staff member, there will always be vandals and reverting edits that make you want to pull your hair out and ban all those with one negative edit. If we host a staff election for everytime we get an increase of vandal edits, heck, everyone would be a staff member. At the present time, the Wiki has not seem any vandal activity that is staff election worthy, or gone through any dramatic decrease in active staff. In short: Just give it time. After the holiday season is over, staff activity (as will user activity) will be up. Note: Xion4ever does not mean to say "No staff election" or shift ideas to be greedy, mean, and so on. Xion4ever just believes that this is just a phase like we've seen and the past, and will fade after a while, like it has in the past.--Xion4ever 22:16, December 20, 2010 (UTC)
I've read all of your messages and I'm sorry if I have offended you. And thank you for replying, I'm satisfied with the answers. I'll just try and fight the vandals at "the time of weakness." And btw DTN, I have never seen Azul81677 on the IRC. Or does he goes by a different nickname? What mattered most was remembered least 04:45, December 21, 2010 (UTC)
- I see him all the time at #FFWiki . --Ag (Silver) - 47 107.8682 amu ~Crono 05:07, December 21, 2010 (UTC)
