Fianl Mix... Not the final unfortunately

Can someone please tell me why Square Enix keep releasing Final Mix titles? It's not like the additional content couldn't have been programmed into the game from the start. To me, it just feels like an attempt to sell more games more than anything else, since the original games don't tend to sell as well as they should.
