Forum:Discord Channel
https://discordapp.com/channels/272088543478677516/272088543478677516 I just made a Discord Channel for the KHWiki considering the IRC channel is mostly inactive and that this might be a suitable replacement. 19:48, 20 January 2017 (UTC)
- I....don't know if this'll work out. I mean, you have to make an account for it. IRC, on the other hand, was literally just click on the link and type in a username. And even that was too difficult for some people. I whipped up an account, but I'm not seeing anyone in here. --Ignis (talk) 22:57, 20 January 2017 (UTC)
- Well discord allows you to change your text and have voice and video conversations. Byzantinefire - There are no strings on me (talk) 23:45, 20 January 2017 (UTC)
- Like I said, this is highly unlikely to work. But if you're content to try it out, then why don't you put up a front-page notice. It's definitely not going to work if this forum thread is the only place people will see of it. --Ignis (talk) 00:05, 21 January 2017 (UTC)

- I can't guarantee it will get every user on, but good on you for the initiative."We're werewolves, not swearwolves." (KrytenKoro) 13:50, 24 January 2017 (UTC)

- I wonder about the uses it has to offer. However, as Ignis pointed out, I'm not too sure/fond of the whole extra account idea.. I dunno. Call me old, but I'm still a fan of the IRC. Xion4ever 03:50, 25 January 2017 (UTC)

- Well, I got dragged into this first, so I might as well pitch in. I'm in agreement with Xion-chan. I honestly don't see the benefit of having a Discord Channel for the KHWiki when we have a fully operational IRC channel of our own. I think having the IRC is better for the wiki. I said this on my talk page, but I'll post it here, as well:
- A.) For the IRC, you don't even need an account to sign into it. Even users don't have an official account on the KHWiki are able to sign into it. The Discord Channel forces users who want to use to make an account to use it.
- B.) As it's on-site, you don't have to leave the wiki to go to a different site just to talk to other users.
- C.) The Discord Channel allows users to change their text, but I think that's one of the down sides of it. IRC channels are typically disabled from other wikias because how much they are abused by users. Changing text when a conversation gets out of hand can eliminate evidence of a user's wrongdoings. Our IRC doesn't, which preserves all evidence of a user's misbehavior as long as someone screencaps it.
- Hypothetically speaking, if the KHWiki were to do come to an agreement about using the Discord Channel, there's also the matter of assigning mods to watch over the channel. We also need to consider the possibility that if the KHWiki agrees to use the Discord Channel, then what will happen to the IRC? Should we get rid it? And what about the users who don't want to create an extra account to just to talk to users that we are perfectly capable of talking to on our on-site IRC, like Xion-chan and myself?--NinjaSheik 23:26, 25 January 2017 (UTC)
- Can you at least try it out first? Byzantinefire - There are no strings on me (talk) 23:43, 25 January 2017 (UTC)
- One thing I do prefer about discord is that it preserves the conversation indefinitely -- it's not wiped nightly, so you can get missed messages -- and that you can set it up to give notifications on your phone."We're werewolves, not swearwolves." (KrytenKoro) 13:48, 27 January 2017 (UTC)
- I'm neutral on this decision, but I just want to say that not needing an account for the IRC can also be a disadvantage, since every random person can log in with your username. TheSilentHero 18:46, 27 January 2017 (UTC)
- The IRC has been around for so long that we've figured out how to deal with nearly every type of attack (courtesy of sove). The reason for the IRC's inactivity is not the platform, it's because of the general inactivity of the community. Changing to a new platform probably will not change that and runs the risk of alienating older members and splitting the community chat into two different channels. That said, the Discord channel may surprise us and interest new users so I'm not against a trial. (TheFifteenthMember) 81.104.143.27 18:55, 27 January 2017 (UTC)
- I use Discord a lot, but I can see why people would be against it and in favor of the IRC, personally, I think both ways are okay, but if one sits unused for long, it's best to nip it in the bud as early as possible. Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I cannot accept, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of those I had to kill because they pissed me off. - Erry 03:22, 16 February 2017 (UTC)
- Can you visit the channel anytime soon? Byzantinefire - There are no strings on me (talk) 03:31, 16 February 2017 (UTC)

I have tried the Discord Channel and I don't see a reason why we shouldn't use it. Sure, we already have the IRC, but Discord seems to be pretty popular, and the IRC seems a little out-dated compared to it. I'm not saying we should abandon the IRC channel, but we can simply have both. Some people will prefer the IRC and some the Discord, and maybe some will check both. That's why I suggested to Byzantinefire to create a draft of a KHWiki:Chat page (to replace KHWiki:IRC) and cover both channels. (Here's the draft.) Does anyone have any objections to this?
