Other appearances
Kingdom Hearts
Cloud often uses this attack as a boss, where he performs a simple triple slash combo (a downward slash, followed by a right-handed outward slash to an upward lifting slash to his left). Any part of the combo can be deflected with Guard to have Cloud rear back a bit, allowing Sora to get a free combo in.
Kingdom Hearts II
The attack appears the same as in the prior game, only it is slightly sped up in animation.
Origin
Cross Slash is a recurring attack in the Final Fantasy series, debuting as one of Cloud Strife's initial Limit Breaks in Final Fantasy VII. It is often a prominent ability in his moveset, making appearances in most games in which he appears. Despite that, Cross-slash's attack movements are actually taken from Cloud's first three attack patterns when he attacks an enemy with the Double Cut Materia that has been mastered to allow him to use 4x-cut.
In several appearances since its debut in Final Fantasy VII, the kanji for 凶 (wicked/bad luck) is visually drawn by the slashes performed. However, its appearance in the Kingdom Hearts series is one of the few instances where the kanji is not visually shown. In other instances, it can also be used in midair, such as in the Dissidia games.
