Cross-slash (凶斬り Kyougiri?, lit. "Ominous Cutter") is a technique that appears in Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. It allows the user to assault the enemy with a three-hit combo. It is a signature ability of Cloud.

Cross-slash+ (凶斬り・改 Kyougiri: Kai?, lit. "Ominous Cutter: Revised") is a variation that allows the user to warp next to an enemy before continuing with Cross-slash.

Mechanics

In Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, Cross-slash is a Summon Sleight. Using Cross-slash summons Cloud to the battlefield, whereupon he executes a three-hit combo. The card combination for Cross-slash is:

Cloud (card).png + Cloud (card).png

Cross-slash+ is also a Summon Sleight. It summons Cloud to the battlefield, whereupon he warps next to an enemy before using Cross-slash. The card combination for Cross-slash+ is:

Learning Cross-slash

Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories

Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories

  • Sora learns Cross-slash once he obtains the Cloud card by clearing the Olympus Coliseum Room of Truth.
  • Sora learns Cross-slash+ after clearing Veggie Panic.

Other appearances

Kingdom Hearts

Cloud often uses this attack as a boss, where he performs a simple triple slash combo (a downward slash, followed by a right-handed outward slash to an upward lifting slash to his left). Any part of the combo can be deflected with Guard to have Cloud rear back a bit, allowing Sora to get a free combo in.

Kingdom Hearts II

The attack appears the same as in the prior game, only it is slightly sped up in animation.

Origin

Cross Slash is a recurring attack in the Final Fantasy series, debuting as one of Cloud Strife's initial Limit Breaks in Final Fantasy VII. It is often a prominent ability in his moveset, making appearances in most games in which he appears. Despite that, Cross-slash's attack movements are actually taken from Cloud's first three attack patterns when he attacks an enemy with the Double Cut Materia that has been mastered to allow him to use 4x-cut.

In several appearances since its debut in Final Fantasy VII, the kanji for 凶 (wicked/bad luck) is visually drawn by the slashes performed. However, its appearance in the Kingdom Hearts series is one of the few instances where the kanji is not visually shown. In other instances, it can also be used in midair, such as in the Dissidia games.
