"Arendelle is safer with me staying up here. Please, go away!"
—Elsa to Sora

Elsa is the queen of Arendelle who appears in Kingdom Hearts III, and originally from the Disney film Frozen. She is the older sister of Anna, both of whom are two of the New Seven Hearts.

Story

Kingdom Hearts Union χ

Elsa's power is channeled by the Book of Prophecies to form the Supernova - Elsa and the Anna & Elsa Medals.

Before Kingdom Hearts III

When Elsa was little, she used to remain close to her younger sister Anna, but one day, she shut her off for an unknown reason.

As the years passed, Anna and Elsa barely saw each other until the day of her coronation, making Anna excited as she thought she finally got a chance to speak with her sister again. Unfortunately, at the party, Anna got into an argument with her sister, resulting in Elsa unleashing her magic to push her away. This resulted in Elsa running away from Arendelle, feeling frightened she might hurt others.

Kingdom Hearts III

Upon arriving in Arendelle, Sora notices Elsa fleeing across the bay, transforming the water into ice as she runs feeling scared. Curious if something happened to her, Sora, Donald, and Goofy go after her to the North Mountain and speak with her. When they meet, Elsa hesitantly asks who are they, to which the trio introduces themselves. Elsa tells the trio to return to the village and needs to be left alone. Feeling concerned, Sora tries to ask her about her troubles, resulting in Elsa unleashing her magic at the trio, much to their shock. Eventually, this attracted the Heartless, leading to the trio to take care of them while she seeks cover.

Elsa tells Sora that her powers hurt people.

After defeating the Heartless, Elsa thanks them for protecting her and apologizes for getting upset. When a Winterhorn prepares to attack the trio from behind, Elsa uses her magic on to destroy it. Sora is impressed by her ice powers, but Elsa believes that her magic only hurts people. Sora then tells Elsa to return home before more Heartless show up, but she tells him she plans to isolate herself in the mountain to keep Arendelle safe from her and creates a wall of ice to prevent Sora, Donald, and Goofy from following her.

Later, the group sees Elsa sing "Let It Go", a song about casting off her inhibitions, as she brings Olaf to life and creates an ice palace for herself. Anna visits her, informing her of Arendelle's condition, hoping that Elsa can unfreeze Arendelle's eternal winter. Elsa becomes frustrated and emotional as she does not know how to thaw the town, resulting in Elsa accidentally cursing Anna with an icicle. Elsa's bodyguard Marshmallow then throws Anna out of the palace. Elsa is later knocked unconscious somehow and abducted by Hans, who tries to return her to Arendelle.

Hans attempts to slay Elsa.

While on the frozen lake, Hans tries to murder Elsa in front of Anna, but Anna blocks his way and freezes in place. Elsa weeps, thinking her sister is dead, but it turns out that this was an act of true love, saving Anna. Elsa realizes that the power of love has the power to thaw, and as a result, her feelings of love stops the eternal winter and saves Arendelle.

Sometime after Xehanort's defeat, Anna, Kristoff and Olaf go sledding. Elsa watches them launch off a mountain and uses her powers to create a ramp.

Appearance

Elsa is a young woman with blonde hair and blue eyes. When Sora first encounters her, she wears a teal-and-black dress with a magenta cape and a gold tiara on her French braided crown twist bun. Eventually, Elsa switches to a blue dress, wearing her hair in a loose French braid that is swept over her left shoulder.

Personality

"Love... will thaw. Love... Of course. Love!"
—Elsa realizes the neutralizer to her ice powers

Elsa is much more mature and reserved and introverted compared to Anna. She has poor self-esteem and wants to be left alone and views herself as a danger to Anna and society due to her ice powers. Sora posits that this is her away of caring for and protecting people, comparing her to Riku. However, when she realizes that love is the answer to unfreezing her ice powers, she begins to open up to Anna and everyone else.

Origin

Elsa first appeared in the 2013 Disney film Frozen, voiced by Idina Menzel. She is a composite of two characters from Hans Christian Andersen's The Snow Queen: Kai, one of the story's protagonists, and the titular Snow Queen herself.

In Frozen, Elsa and Anna were orphaned at a young age when their parents King Agnarr and Queen Iduna died in a seastorm. Elsa was born with the power to control ice and snow, although it is never explained why. Due to her powers, Elsa developed shame and guilt after almost killing Anna in their childhood. Years later, on the day of her coronation as queen, Elsa accidentally reveals her powers and flees Arendelle in fear after being called a witch. While fleeing, Elsa accidentally puts Arendelle in an increasingly dangerous snowstorm. She builds a castle with her powers, creating Olaf in the process. Anna takes it upon herself to locate her sister and find a way to save Arendelle.
