Hey, guys! It's that time of year, the Wiki's Annual End-of-Year Event. Chainoffire and I have been planning a Mirage Arena-style tournament, which can be seen here. Basically, we have a competition in various categories to determine the best of the best in each, according to the fandom. It's a great ending to the year, a celebration of the 15th Anniversary, and a lead into Kingdom Hearts III. We're planning to start this off next week (that way, it's a 13-week event, the final week being the last week of the year), with a nomination-style window for a couple of the larger pool categories (Disney Characters, Heartless, etc.), and most of the brackets would start either mid-October or November. We could even open the rest of this week and next week to other ideas for categories. Finally, the tournament would be duplicated on The Keyhole, and we'd count the votes on both sites at the end of each battle to determine the winner. We'd like to know what you all think, especially since we plan to start next week.

While this idea sounds fun, I have some concerns:
- It's similar to the Mirage Arena, and while this isn't a problem, the MA hasn't been getting a lot of votes lately, so I'm not sure this will.
- Spreading it out over 13 weeks is fitting for a KH event, but it may cause people to lose interest after a while.
- Comparing to previous EoYEs, it doesn't seem to require much activity. One EoYE I personally really enjoyed was when we had to figure out which trivia belonged to which users. For me, the fun in that was that we had to discuss and do research to find the correct answers. In this event, you only need to vote, which doesn't really sound very exciting to me.
That being said, I have no problem against doing this event, I'm just not sure if it will be a success. If we're doing this, we might want to put the MA on break, so we don't have two tournaments running at the same time. I actually have an idea of my own, though. Something I've been wanting to do for a while.
Basically, it's a quiz with questions about all aspects of the series (games, manga, novels, TCG, etc.), similar to the trivia contests held on Bulbapedia every year. A small group of editors, maybe 2 or 3, will choose the questions, with the answers being on either of the wiki's. The questions should be tricky of course, so the participants will have to search the wiki's to find the answers. We could even promote the event on facebook and twitter (and maybe on KH13, since the Unchained wiki is part of KH13), and let all people join, even if they don't have accounts. Not only would this increase the traffic to the wiki's, but people might actually start using them if they haven't already. The only problem is that, unlike Bulbapedia, we can't give away any real prizes, they actually give out games to the winners, so I'm not sure if it will be very appealing to people. If we're doing this, we should start early, though, so we have enough time to sync the information between wiki's. And we need to keep an eye on the edits to see if people aren't changing the pages that contain the answers to change it so that they're correct.
So what do you think? We can always use the other event to count down to the release of KH3, or something.

So, in response:
- We definitely run the risk of no one playing, just like with the Mirage Arena. However, the idea is to, just like your plan with the trivia, we were planning on opening up the contest to everyone. And we'd promote the tournament on Facebook and Twitter. The only reason we're requiring an account is to keep track of who is voting. Definitely, we'll need to suspend the Mirage Arena for a time if we do the Tournament.
- Certainly spreading it over 13 weeks is a bit of a stretch. That's part of the reason why it's fragmented into multiple brackets that can run simultaneously or at different times, and this first month is more of a loose prep/nominations thing. I haven't figured out all the timing yet, but for sure there are some brackets that are I can span over just one month (Best Female/Male Protagonists) and some that stretch out to two months (Best Heartless, Best Dream Eater).
- True, there isn't a lot of engagement involved. At least not inherently. My hope is that, with opening it up to more than just the regular us-es, we can have more people who engage in the discussion sections, meaning we have more debate and engagement on why one subject is better than the other and more effort to swing votes during "battles".
I really like your idea of a trivia contest, too, though. The only issue is, like you said, the prizes. I remember early on when I got here, there was a trivia contest on the wiki for Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX. The prize, as I recall, was an art commission, and I don't think there were many entries. And I still didn't win.... The only work-around I've come up with is a sort of on-site award of sorts for stuff like Most Influential or Most Voter or something like that, kinda like what I've noticed KHInsider does on their forums. Small little image to start decorating a userpage or something. So far, that's the only thing I've come up with.
Another inherent issue with both ideas is that both encourage more people on the articles. Mass reading and editing is what we're envisioning. Which means constant checking of the IRC to make sure everything's still under control. Eagle-eye reviewing to make sure, on the one hand with the tournament, that the edits are quality and don't ruin the article, and on the other hand with the trivia, like you said, so no one is changing the pages to fit their answers. It'll be a lot of work on the part of those of us who actually know what goes on on-site. It's not that I don't want all these people here, but rather a forewarning that we'll need to be vigilant.
We could, of course, do both. Have one of the events here and the other on The Keyhole. It doesn't solve the prize issue, though, but, the more excuses to get people on-site, the better in my opinion.

So, I propose a vote on the matter, seeing as no one is commenting any further. We can either have the tournament, the trivia contest, or both.
Just a quick update on the tournament. I've been mapping out the whole thing on an Excel document, and let me tell you, things will definitely be different than the Mirage Arena. So far, with the expectation of some brackets starting as early as October 16, there will be weeks where there will be around 25 different battles in order to get all of them finished by year's end. So things will definitely not drag out like the Mirage Arena has lately, because we would have multiple battles on different topics at the same time. Of course, each battle will only go for a week, and I'm thinking of making it just the five weekdays (it would allow for time to count the votes and change out for the next battles). I was also working on a code snippet that would make changing the subjects at battle easier. There are currently some brackets that we're going to be merging or nixing for the sake of time. As for rewards, the only thing I've come up with is, like I've noted before, site awards like those found here on KHInsider. I'm working to make some based on the HD Trophies. I'll show you guys if/when I finish it.
We really need to determine if we're going to do this, though, since the Disney Character and Enemy brackets have to be determined by the 23rd in order to have a chance to have it finished by the end of the year if we get the 32 characters per bracket I'd like to have. Also, if we do the trivia, we need to start figuring out the details, like the trivia questions, so that it's ready by December.
