Story

Kingdom Hearts II

Role in the Organization

Demyx's role in the Organization's plans is minor. He is sent after Sora on suggestion by Xigbar to find him and "liberate his true disposition", that is, to keep Sora on the path Organization XIII wish him to take. He also contacts Hades, but no deal was made and Demyx promptly flees, saying "Run, run away!", passing by Sora and co. and leaving them puzzeled at his outburst. Later, Demyx steals the Olympus Stone, and soon encounters Sora within the Underworld once more. Although Sora doesn't understand the meaning of Demyx's objectives, which he reads aloud, nor why Demyx calls him "Roxas", Demyx is unable to fulfill them and took the next ordered step, which is to attack Sora. Demyx at first only summons "forms" of water - water shaped into himself and musical notes, which then attacked Sora, Goofy and Donald - which he controlled with his sitar. He is unsuccessful in defeating Sora with his water forms, however, and escapes instead of continuing the fight.

Death

Demyx confronts Sora later in Hollow Bastion during the War of 1000 Heartless, again greeting Sora in a rather friendly manner. However, Sora and his companions' response is hostile, even claiming that Demyx is unable to fight. Demyx still maintains his personality despite the insult, with only a "You shouldn't judge anyone by appearance" in a slightly deeper tone. But when Sora and co. claim that the Nobodies do not have hearts, Demyx's normal carefree air vanishes, and he silences them with a much darker tone and attacks the "traitor" again with all his strength. In the end, however, Demyx is defeated again and fatally wounded. After lamenting his loss, he fades into darkness, the first Organization member to do so in Kingdom Hearts II.

Personality

Demyx, unlike the other Organization members, has a very casual, friendly, but also cowardly demeanor. In spite of the fact that he holds great power as a member of Organization XIII, he runs from many encounters, including ones with Hades and Sora.

Demyx is much less serious and more carefree than the other Organization members, and seems to take his task of pursuing Sora lightly. He doesn't hesitate to read his orders aloud in front of Sora, nor complain about his distaste for fighting. His cries in battle after being hit are also more characteristic of "yelps" than those of the other members, and are exclamations rather than reactions. In his final battle against Sora, however, his true nature as an emotionless entity is revealed, proving that his light attitude is a farce; like other Nobodies, he merely puts on an act of having emotions to hide the fact that he has no heart.

Fighting Style

Demyx playing his sitar

Demyx, being a musician, uses music to control the water around him and to summon water "forms", objects shaped out of water into musical instruments or copies of himself, which move about the battle area to hit Sora, forcing him to defeat the forms in a certain amount of time to avoid an automatic loss. To this effect, he uses a "sitar", a guitar-like string instrument, which is shaped into the symbol of the Nobodies.

The aforementioned water forms are defeated by simple attacks but are aided with a reaction command that lets Sora grab one of the note-shaped forms and uses to destroy other forms, both the note-shaped and Demyx-shaped ones. However, in the Data Rematch within the Garden of Assemblage in Final Mix+, the time to defeat the forms is constantly 30 seconds and Demyx only summons the Demyx-shaped forms, meaning the reaction command no longer appears and Sora has to destroy the forms manually, even if the number of forms summoned reaches 99. Most players, however, compensate for the loss of the reaction command by using Firaga in normal or Wisdom Form, depending on the number. Demyx also does this continually, often saying "Dance water, dance!" and starting the whole process again after Sora destroys all of the forms.

Along with that, Demyx can also create giant pillars of water, erupting from the ground of nowhere. He uses this technique in various forms: forming behind him as he jumps through the air, becoming a wall of torrential water that slowly moves towards the opponent, or even forming wildly and rapidly as Demyx swings his sitar about. Demyx can whack Sora with his sitar, but Sora can counter this move with a Reaction Command. He can also attack Sora with a barrage of bubbles, like a cannon as well as from the air directly above him. He also has a habit of playing in battle, initially causing an easy or difficult counter. Despite being hestiant to fight, Demyx is shown to be a very capable and strong fighter. His water pillars that he uses frequently can easily knock out Donald and Goofy and take chunks out of Sora's health, leaving Sora to fight alone, and make hitting Demyx difficult. His water clones must be destroyed within the time limit or the player faces an instant game over. Unexperienced or unprepared players can probably expect to lost either by loss of health or failing to destroy his water clones on time.

Trivia

  • In the Japanese version, Demyx was voiced by popular seiyuu Kenichi Suzumura, whose last involvement with Square Enix was to voice Gippal of Final Fantasy X-2 and Zack Fair of the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII series (as a bit of trivia, both characters are voiced by the exact same Japanese and English voice actors, the latter actor being Rick Gomez). The English dub had Demyx voiced by Ryan O'Donohue, who voiced Randall in Disney's Recess and had a short role on the Lion King 2 as young Kovu.
  • Demyx is also one of the most popular members of Organization XIII, along with Axel, Roxas, Zexion and Xemnas, in spite of appearing in very few scenes.
