Matthew, yes, people need to have some care and not be needlessly crude. However, on the talk pages, when we are trying to get our point across, people will use swearwords to indicate their emphasis. It is not worth policing on the talk pages.
Symbol Character - Mickey.png
FA icon.png To add on, I really think a line needs to be drawn. True that some people will end up swearing just to get their point across. But where it verges on the lack of civility, then we will have to take action. Same applies for the IRC.

Polls solve nothing. N O T H I N G. While it is important that we stay civil towards one another, a ban/limit on cussing is just preposterous. We keep the cursing out of the articles. That's the best we can do. Just because the games include Disney characters, does't mean the people working hard on the articles have to act like them. People curse everyday in real life as well as on the internet, you can't stop it. And people, lay off the kid. While it was a bit funny at first, I'll admit, he seems really serious about this. Speaking your mind is one thing, but angering/making fun of him is immature.

Keyblade-Blk.png I agree with every word Azul81677 just said. While we would ideally all be perfect, respectful people on here, you absolutely cannot expect that of everyone, or anyone. Most people on here have used even the lightest of curses, admins and mods included. None of us are perfect, but what we can do is just treat each other with respect. While debate can get intense, most situations can be handled without dropping the F-Bomb.

Also, I'll just say this right now, it's a justified opinion of mine: cussing shows unintelligence. Using the same set of six or seven terms to express anger or negativity shows that you do not have knowledge of more proper, expressive, extensive vocabulary. In debate and when I read an argument, the argument that shows a higher degree of vocabulary and does not require cursing to make a point is very often the prefered one. Remember guys, this is the Internet. Specifically, this is a wiki about a silly, whimsical video game. It should never get so serious to drop F-Bombs when arguing about the grammar of an article. That is all.

I agree wth both Azul and DTN. Curses sure do show unintelligence. Yet, we are not supposed to expect that people won't curse. I hate curses... but I curse too when I'm really angry or hit my toe against a rock.

But one thing about the internet is that we can think before saying, so i'ts easier to control the curses. This is somethign everyone should have in mind. Think before say.

Wikia is about sharing information about the subject that we like in a civil manner with good faith in mind. If everyone keeps that in mind there shouldn't be any problem. If there are problems users are recommended to report to the elected staff for further action. BLUER一番 06:07, September 5, 2010 (UTC)

It's a chat room for the Wiki. You can find a way to access it here.

Symbol Character - Mickey.png
FA icon.png Now, I was told that a wiki doesn't embody its subject. Whilst we're all torn on the subject of liberty and policing, I honestly believe :
  1. The wiki should embody its subject.
  2. There should be at least a level of decency.

Denying these two would mean giving leeway for people to behave as they wish, which of course, can in some instances lead to a severe lack of civility.

Just to cite a case in KHFR which I witnessed, we initially didn't embody our subject because you know, all we did was edit, chat, and that was it. This changed when one of our users actually asked for hentai.

No seriously, that was a slap on our faces.

Unbirth's response was this is a wiki on Kingdom Hearts. We don't just put in the official stuff, we put in the good stuff. And with this, the user who did it was sanctioned.

I'm not advocating for us to be as strict as he was. No. But the point is, there are some things which should be accepted and some things which should not be. This having been said, we're aware that KHW is frequented by minors and adults alike. There needs to be a level of respect. And that's what we should embody.

SilverCrono Well, I can tell who you are. "Looks like you're prepared."

"What is with you and picking up stray puppies?"

Isa_bbs.png This is getting serious. We can end this all in one fell swoop.

Be civil towards others.

Yes, this means a lot of things. But it boils down to what your definition of civil is. Honestly, to me, it's being nice to one another so far as to where you can both work together without problems. This in no way means you have to kiss up to anybody. No, not at all. Just tolerate them until you guys can work together. All I ask. Then, we can all work together and get our main goal done: have fun and work on the wiki. That's what we're all here for, anyway.

So, in conclusion and for you troglodytes people who didn't read my rant, just be nice enough to edit with them. Cursing is not neccesary, and neither is a huge flame war about cursing or not. Get it? Got it? Good.

A little mini-rant here. Bear down...

Words are funny things. They can be powerful tools to build and inform, and they can also tear down and destroy.

Here's the deal with curse words. I'm actually not against them for the most part, believe it or not. I use them, probably more often than I should. They are not bad things in and of themselves. But there is definitely a time and a place for them. Saying something like, "If I have to try and beat Sephiroth one more 'damn' time..." is fine. That's what the word is there for, to express frustration. Even Pixar has put the word "hell" into G-rated movies (Cars & Ratatouille), because it beautifully summed up how a character was attempting to express themselves. Used correctly and cleverly, cursing is not a bad thing.

On the other hand: those who feel the need to curse every other word to make a point. Perhaps they think they're coming off as more grown-up or edgy. They're not. They come across as immature, careless, and not putting real thought into the issue. Cursing to express yourself offends me not so much because it's offensive as it's just plain lazy. Make a point if you must, but if you drop the f-bomb every other word to try and make it, you've pretty much lost, because you've just proven yourself unable to make an argument in a reasonable manner, and it's just not worth the time to pay attention to it.

I think, though, as SilverCrono said, the real issue here is this: if you are disrespecting another editor here at all, stop it. You might use every single one of George Carlin's legendary seven dirty words in the process, or you might use words we'd consider perfectly acceptable in every day language, like "worthless," "stupid," or "terrible". Either way, the goal of the writer is the same when directing them against an individual: you are belittling another person with the goal to make them feel bad about themselves. You are not providing constructive criticism, or telling them what they can do to fix the issue. And while it's slipped through in the past, it has not gone unnoticed. Any editor, any staff member, veteran writer or brand new gnome, should be called on it if it's seen happening. It is there, in black and white, one of the most fundamental rules of the wiki. Disrespect is not tolerated.

Cursing is a tool to be used wisely. But so are any other words you use, and especially those you direct at others.

Bad word are never to be used. They are BAD.You can never use them properly because they are ALL BAD.You really can get your point across without using any of them.Oh,and BebobKate,I suggest going into my talk page to hear my speech about how everyone can be happy if bad word aren't allowed. And I know they had hell in Ratatouille.I have never heard it in Cars though. But my point is hell isn't a bad word.Just if used wrong it is inappropriate. For example when the chef uses it in Ratatouille,he is trying to say how bad it will be in the kitchen, that it will be as bad as or close to hell itself. The times you don't use it is by itself or with an "oh" before it.And when saying "what the 'h word' ".In either of those occasions you say heck instead.WHEN to use it is when just saying it as the word.Or when referring to a place that you think will really be as bad as hell(aka when referring to the place hell it is ok).One more thing for me to mention, you used a bad word but since it has to be there to be the example it needs to be,I replaced it with 'd word'.Don't worry,I am sure people know what word it is.Matthew26 06:57, September 7, 2010 (UTC)

I beleve that bad words should be banned, like what TNE and the others ment! If you said a bad word at the Pokemon wiki, you are banned for life. I am sick of people wanting bad words in our pages. UxieLover1994 07:17, September 7, 2010 (UTC)

TALK - I'd rather we just skip the formalities.
Curse words are just words, like teapot or heartless. In my opinion, so called curse words are fine when they are used as an expletive or to convey a particular emotion; sparingly, curses can make a very nice sentence. As BebobKate said, they are a tool to be used wisely, just like any other word. However, as almost everyone has pointed out, disrespect is completely out of the question for a wiki. When used to insult someone, it should not be tolerated in the same way a non-curse would. It's all a matter of just acting civil around eachother.

There are downsides to having curse words banned. For one, Mod's and Admin's would have to police the comments and take the time to remove them, detracting from the time they could be doing something useful. Second, people are going to get frustrated if the words they can use are limited, as seen with ZexionFan321's comment as well as have their time wasted having to check for any possible Curse Words (which I should point out, varies from country to country, hell isn't a curse word here in the UK, but bastard is). Why should everyone put themselves through this constant censorship just to keep a small minority from getting offended?

I'd also like to reiterate BlackSoulBlade's comment. Editing other users comments, no matter how small the change, is against the rules.

Symbol - Magic Hat.png
FA icon.png The Recent Changes aren't a huge globe. We can track them. But the question is not about policing. Don't even BRING IN the policing part. We have enough on our side.

The question is people's respect. To be honest, if anyone's going to go ahead on a swearing spree just to prove his point, my immediate impression would be that he hasn't enough vocabulary for his age. Just like what BebopKate says.

Before anyone even thinks of swearing, remember a few things :

  1. The age policy has been lowered to allow kids on. Also, there are kids mature for their age (I will not cite names) who know better than to go into a swearing spree.
  2. The intention of the writer was to talk about respect. We banned a previous user for her counts of swearing, among others. WHY ARE WE ALLOWING THIS NOW ?
  3. You may cite freedom of speech, but I don't really care. Because your freedom of speech can only exist when our rights are respected, and vice versa. It's not subjective. On KHW, it's pretty absolute. There are lines to be drawn. Live with them or just drag your trunk around complying.

Pardon the snide tone, but I'm actually saying this because the people who have used these words have also been shown not to be civil. And just like other users, I don't want a repeat of what had happened in the past.

There are some things even the stars cannot tell me. TroisNyxÉtienne — 08:21, September 7, 2010 (UTC)

BlizzardRCOBlue.png In my opinion, bad words are only words. It won't change your life if you hear/read it. Sometimes, I use those words to express my emotions to the readers and I don't use it properly here. Friends and I curse a lot in real life! But, those happen only when we're joking or playing, not when we're serious and only when we know each other.

When I'm super angry, I curse a LOT more than usual. I don't even care who'll hear it at that moment.
Everyone knows when to curse and when to be polite. We're all grew up.

Look, Matthew, you can't control what other people say. You haven't got the right to rewrite other people's words at your whim.
However, you do have a right to respect, and for all the rest of us, if you can't somehow find a way to get around swearing at every opportunity (*cough* NeutraVega *cough*), then you're either mean-spirited or you have a really bad imagination.
We still have the practice of placing rules on our own personal talk-pages at our disposal, but for the rest of the time, we need to strike a balance between being accommodating to each other's sensitivities, and lightening the frakk up.
