Melody Catcher is a technique that appears in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. It allows the user to follow along with the music to damage enemies or change the surroundings.

The ability's Japanese name "Fantasmic" references the Disney nighttime show Fantasmic!.

Development

Two unused music tracks are present in the data of Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. One track was based on Trepak from the Nutcracker Suite, and the other was based on The Sorcerer's Apprentice. These tracks were later implemented in Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance HD.

Mechanics

Melody Catcher spirte

In Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, Melody Catcher is the Reality Shift in Symphony of Sorcery. When activated, the player must use the touchscreen and stylus to tap out the beat of the notes given as well as follow the directions that the notes flow. Both Sora and Riku use their own specific music during their respective visits; music is based on the Pastoral Symphony for Sora, and Waltz of the Flowers from the Nutcracker Suite for Riku. The bottom screen is black with the notes appearing for the Reality Shift.

In Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance HD, the player instead must press or hold the respective buttons in time with the notes. This time, the music used includes Trepak from the Nutcracker Suite and the Sorcerer's Apprentice. Instead of a black screen, the Reality Shift shows the landscape of the area where it is initiated with the notes and buttons appearing on a line instead.
