Items (アイテム Aitemu ) are a recurring mechanic in the Kingdom Hearts series. They are used in battle, in synthesis, and in story progression.
Battle items
Battle items (バトルアイテム Batoru Aitemu ) are consumable items that can be equipped to party members and used in the field. They typically restore a party member's HP or MP. In Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts II, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, and Kingdom Hearts III, equipped battle items can be used by selecting the Items command in the Command Menu. In Kingdom Hearts II, 358/2 Days and Kingdom Hearts III, equipped items can be set to shortcuts for easy access.
In the items menu, battle items are represented by the icon of a vial partially filled with a green liquid.

Key items (キーアイテム Kī Aitemu ) are typically used to trigger scripted events or advance the story. They cannot be manually consumed or spent, although some key items are removed from the inventory after particular cutscenes or events.
In Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts II, and Kingdom Hearts III, key items are symbolized by a purple orb icon, along with synthesis materials, and are listed in the "Stock" tab of the "Items" menu.
File:MiscRCO.png In Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, Kingdom Hearts Re:coded, and Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, key items have their own tab in the "Items" menu, represented by a unique icon.
Key items are not present in Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories and Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days.
Materials
Materials are used as ingredients in the synthesis of various items, commands, and consumables. They are typically dropped by enemies, but can also be obtained from shops, chests, and event rewards.
Synthesis materials
Synthesis materials are used for Item Synthesis in Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts II, and Kingdom Hearts III; and for Command Meld in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep.
In Kingdom Hearts, synthesis materials are classed as key items and therefore represented by the purple orb icon.
In Kingdom Hearts II and Kingdom Hearts III, synthesis materials are represented by the icon of a cyan gem. They are always deposited from the stock inventory to the synthesis workshop whenever it is visited and the collected materials can be viewed in the synthesis menu. Collecting synthesis materials results in the completion of Collector's Goals, which yields rewards and perks. Synthesis materials are divided into four ranks:
- Rank C: Shard (かけら Kakera )
- Rank B: Stone (しずく Shizuku , lit. "Droplets")
- Rank A: Gem (魔石 Maseki )
- Rank S: Crystal (結晶 Kesshō )
Higher rank items are typically rarer and used to make more powerful items.
In Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, synthesis items are represented by the icon of a white orb.
Material panels
Material panels are used for panel synthesis in Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. They cannot be installed into the Panel System.
Flavors
Flavors are used to make Ice Cream in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Final Mix. They are dropped by Prize Pods. Flavors have their own tab in the "Items" menu and are represented by the icon of a blue pot. They are always deposited from the inventory to to the Ice Cream Shop whenever it is visited in return for the appropriate Ice Cream commands.
Dream Pieces
Dream Pieces take the place of synthesis materials in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance and are used to create Spirits. They are represented in the "Items" menu by a unique icon. There are three classes of Dream Pieces:
- Figment (幻想 Gensō , lit. "Illusion")
- Fancy (空想 Kūsō , lit. "Fantasy")
- Fantasy (夢想 Musō , lit. "Dream")
Ingredients
Ingredients are used to cook cuisine at Le Grand Bistrot in Kingdom Hearts III. They are typically obtained by breaking props or purchasing from the Moogle Shop, but some can only be received from the Flantastic Seven. Ingredients are listed in the "Materials" tab of the "Items" menu, alongside synthesis materials, and are represented by the icon of a mushroom.
Other items
The following may also appear in the Items menu, but they can be considered separate categories:
