Rapunzel first appeared in the 2010 Disney animated film ''Tangled'', inspired by the protagonist of the original Brothers Grimm fairy tale. Rapunzel is the lost princess of Corona who was kidnapped as a baby from her parents Queen Arianna and King Frederic by a greedy woman named Mother Gothel, who seeks to use the magical powers of Rapunzel's hair to live as long as possible. Having been imprisoned by Gothel for eighteen years in a secluded tower with only her pet chameleon [[Pascal]] for other friendship, Rapunzel has developed a strong desire to explore the outside world, but Gothel tries to end this desire by saying it is a cruel and dangerous place. On her eighteenth birthday, Rapunzel encounters a young man named Flynn Rider who enters the tower looking for a place to hide after stealing a tiara. After locking Flynn up and convincing Gothel to go on a three-day journey to find paint for her birthday, Rapunzel blackmails Flynn into helping her to find the lanterns that have appeared on her birthday.
