Items (アイテム Aitemu?) are a recurring mechanic in the Kingdom Hearts series. They are used in battle, in synthesis, and in story progression.

Battle items

Item icon Battle items (バトルアイテム Batoru Aitemu?) are consumable items that can be equipped to party members and used in the field. They typically restore a party member's HP or MP. In Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts II, Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A fragmentary passage-, and Kingdom Hearts III, equipped battle items can be used by selecting the Items command in the Command Menu. Starting from Kingdom Hearts II, equipped items can be set to shortcuts for easy access.

In the items menu, battle items are represented by the icon of a vial partially filled with a green liquid.

Item slots

In Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts II and Kingdom Hearts III, only a certain amount of battle items can be taken into combat at once, as each party member is restricted to the amount of item slots that they have. Each character begins with a certain amount of item slots, while Sora, Donald, and Goofy can gain more by progressing through the game.
