On occasion in Kingdom Hearts II, Sora often unintentionally shows somewhat of a disrespect towards people of higher authority than himself upon meeting them. For example, when meeting Yen Sid, Donald and Goofy respectfully bow to him, while Sora greets him by simply saying, "Hey there!". Goofy is clearly shocked by this, and Donald shouts at him to show some respect. When meeting Queen Minnie, Sora simply asks, "Where's the King?". This leads to Donald grabbing him by the ear and asking Minnie to excuse him. When Sora and King Mickey were disputing about Ansem's identity, Sora, thinking that he has forgotten who Ansem is, drags King Mickey by the arm in order to show him the portrait of Xehanort in Ansem's study. However, when meeting Princess Jasmine again in Kingdom Hearts II, he actually does bow to her, along with Donald and Goofy. He, Donald, and Goofy also bow in respect to Simba as the new king during their second visit to the Pride Lands.

It has been hinted that Sora harbors strong romantic feelings for Kairi, and vice versa. This is first shown when Riku teases him by threatening to share a paopu fruit with Kairi if Sora does not, which obviously makes Sora uncomfortable. Even so, he draws himself giving Kairi a paopu fruit on the wall of the Secret Place. Throughout the series Sora's affection for Kairi is hinted numerous times, notably when Sora sees other couples (such as Jack Skellington and Sally, William Turner and Elizabeth Swann, and Mulan and Li Shang) interacting, as well as the fact that Donald and Goofy often points it out. Saïx refers to Kairi as "the fire that feeds Sora's anger", while Naminé refers to her as Sora's light, Xion resembles Kairi due to Sora's strong feelings for her, and Roxas refers to her as "the girl [Sora] likes". When Kairi is apparently saved by Ansem, Sora's feelings for Kairi have become so strong that he is willing to forgive Ansem for all his past wrongdoings, unaware that it is a disguised Riku. At the end of Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, Sora visibly has difficulty explaining to Kairi that he has to leave to find Terra, Aqua and Ven.

Their relationship reached confirmation in Kingdom Hearts III when on the day before their final battle with Xehanort, Kairi hands Sora a Paopu Fruit stating that she wants to be a part of his life no matter what. They then proceed to share a Paopu fruit while promising to keep each other safe. Sora makes good on his promise by immediately running to Kairi and embracing her for protection against Terra-Xehanort. When all of the guardians are defeated, Sora finds himself on a plane between life and death known as the "Final World". Sora soon discovers that it was Kairi who kept Sora from fading away, believing that he would pull through without any doubt. Upon their reunion, Sora and Kairi happily join hands. When Sora realizes that Kairi was responsible for saving his life, he tells Kairi he feels strong with her. She looks away in embarrassment and holds his hand as they proceed to join the others to redo their fight. Near the end of their fight with the 13, Xemnas takes Kairi away from Sora before he fights Saix with the newly returned Roxas and Xion. Once Sora rejoins Riku and Mickey, when he sees Xemnas, the first thing he does is demand the location of Kairi. After defeating Xemnas, Ansem, and Young Xehanort, the present Xehanort summons Kairi and strikes her while Sora is desperately running to her location to save her. When Kairi's body disappears Sora screams her name in anguish and strikes Xehanort while asking why would he target her, with tears rolling down his face. When Xehanort pushes Sora back and he lands back on the ground, all he can do is continue to cry while asking Xehanort why he would do that. Upon Xehanort's defeat, Mickey tries to announce it's finally over, but Sora corrects him while looking depressed. Sora then tells his friends how he wants to be together with her, and refuses to let her be alone for another second. He then departs using the Power of Waking to find her, despite Mickey's pleas not to and Young Xehanort's previous warnings about misusing this power. Soon after that, while everyone is having fun on Destiny Islands, Sora sits alone with Kairi holding her hand. He then looks at her one last time before suddenly disappearing.

The relationship between the two is also evident enough that Xemnas uses Kairi as motivation for Sora. After defeat of Xehanort, Sora refuses to wait around before attempting to find and restore Kairi. Later, while everyone is having fun on Destiny Islands, Sora sits alone with Kairi holding her hand.
