Moana first appeared as the main protagonist of the Disney animated film ''{{w|Moana}}'', voiced by Au'li Cravalho. Eventually, Maui sets off to battle Te Ka, the Lava monster guarding Te Fiti. Things go awry and Maui's hook is damaged in the battle, leading to him leaving and Moana to sulk in despair. At her lowest point, Moana is visited by Tala's spirit, who reminds Moana of who she is and gives Moana the confidence to take the Heart back herself. She confronts Te Ka and with the help of her chicken friend Hei Hei and Maui, sails to Te Fiti. When there, she is unable to find where to restore the Heart, until she realizes that Te Ka is, in fact, Te Fiti. She redeems Te Fiti and returns to Motonui, now free from the blight, and is finally accepted by her father for who she is and leads her people to a new age of exploration.
