Battle Strategy
Battle Strategy
Sephiroth is the hardest boss in Kingdom Hearts by far and it takes a lot to beat him. The abilities you need are Strike Raid and Second Chance. Equipping Ars Arcanum, Sonic Blade, and any other support abilities you have would also help. However, some players choose to just use normal attacks; these are more than sufficient for defeating him and sometimes you will never use any abilities in the whole battle. Sometimes, you are too busy concentrating on what your lethal foe will do next, without worrying about your abilities at your disposal. I did not use any abilities - it is more important to watch closely at what he is doing rather than fiddle about with your interface. Put all your Elixirs in all of your item slot - these are crucial;especially when he deploys his heartless angel attack later in the fight. Your level should be at least 65 or higher, but this is considered a low level when challenging Sephiroth - however, it can be done at a very low level indeed. Take heed though, even if a player reaches level 99, they can still be defeated within seconds at the hands of Sephiroth. When the battle begins, get very far away from Sephiroth, as his sword attacks have an insane range. Sephiroth's attacks at this point are basic sword slashes and a flame pillar which he will use throughout the battle; he is still dangerous though. This can be avoided by staying away from him or alternatively dodge rolling when he teleports. Once you've reached safety, begin unleashing Strike Raid combos on Sephiroth. This will not work well if he is in the air. Also, don't worry if his health seems to not move an inch when attacking. He just has more health than visually allowed (similar to Hades), and it may take a while before damage can be seen. At the end of combos, Sephiroth will teleport and attack you from behind after disappearing for a few seconds, but you can see where he is before he attacks by locking on. Continue unleashing Strike Raid combos until his health bar reaches the orange section. At this point, Sephiroth gets faster, he teleports more often, and he gets a new attack, Heartless Angel which takes away all your MP and HP, instant KO. He will begin the attack after teleporting, so locking on before he reappears is essential. However, if you have Second Chance equipped, you still have a chance. This attack can be seen when he stands in place and waves his hand with an orange glow. You will also hear him say, "Descend Heartless Angel" If you manage to reach him before you get an orange halo above your head, the attack will be stopped; alternatively, you can execute Strike Raid and chain as long as possible when you see his traits of executing Heartless Angel, since Sora is invincible during connecting Strike Raid's combo. However, if you receive a orange halo, go to your Items and  select an Elixir as the halo closes in. That way you'll have all your HP and MP back before Sephiroth attacks again and defeats you. After the attack, Sephiroth will begin running and slashing a lot faster. At this point, manual combos are preferred, since Strike Raid will most likely miss. Also, Sephiroth has another new attack. It can be recognized by the screen getting darker and Sephiroth beginning to fly, leaving small black feathers behind. He will begin slashing at you rapidly, and getting caught in his combo could mean certain death. You can dodge it by using Superglide to get away, by rapidly using Dodge Roll or by using the Guard command; either way it is almost certain that you will take heavy damage here, so make sure you have cure spells on shortcut. Continue hacking away at Sephiroth's health while watching out for Sin Harvest and his aerial combos. When his health reaches the yellow bar, Sephiroth will begin using Meteor - his most powerful and most dangerous attack;a long spell that can easily kill you. The spell begins with many meteors falling down from the sky, with each collision causing energy shockwaves on the ground. Just jump and you'll be fine. Don't glide though, as you may hit one of those meteors as they fall. The meteors will begin circling Sephiroth, and getting hit by them WILL cause damage. This could be dodged by running over to Sephiroth and standing next to him. Don't  waste your time attacking, as he is invulnerable at the moment. When the meteors  disappear, Sephiroth will unleash a giant white sphere of energy in your direction, but you'll easily avoid it if you are standing next to him. After the spell, Sephiroth will go berserk. He will become even faster and will teleport more often. When he reappears, he will either rapidly slash at you in a spiral or explode black spheres of energy surrounding him. At this time, Sonic Blade can be used to cause some serious damage after dodging or guarding his attacks. Ars Arcanum should be used if you manage to get very close to him. However, make sure you don't find yourself fumbling around for your special moves when Sephiroth begins going nuts. Manual combos are encouraged though. Just keep attacking until you finally defeat Sephiroth.

Preparation
Sephiroth is easily the hardest boss in the original Kingdom Hearts and a great deal of prepation is needed. First, Strike Raid, Second Chance, Dodge Roll and MP Rage are absolutely essential. If possible, equip two MP Rage, meaning, unless you chose the staff, you'll have to be at Level 66 to earn the second MP Rage. Also, do not equip any other special abilities like Ragnarok or Sonic Blade. Equip any other abilities to boost Sora's power like Berserk and Critical Plus. Scan is especially useful, as it lets you see Sephiroth's HP and know when he's about to enter the next phase of the battle. If possible, equip the Ultima Weapon keychain, but otherwise equip weapons to boost Sora's MP and magic abilities. Oathkeeper, Lionheart or Fairy Harp work for this. Also equip as many Elixirs as possible, or Megalixirs if you are out of Elixirs, and be sure to get Curaga from Aerith in Hollow Bastion. Finally, equip accessories to boost Sora's defense and HP. Gaia Bangles or Omega Arts work for this.

Phase One
For the first part of the battle, Sephiroth walks around the arena performing his Horizontal Slash and Stigma attacks, usually using the former and when you come close. It is possible, by leaping towards him to avoid the attack, to hit Sephiroth with a combo, although you should Dodge Roll after hitting him to avoid his Teleport Slash. At this time, simply chip away at Sephiroth's HP with normal attacks, and heal when needed as MP Rage will restore your HP when you are attacked. Once Sephiroth's first (purple) health bar is depleted, he holds out his hand and says "Come on", signaling he is entering his second phase of attack.

Phase Two
Sephiroth begins dashing around the arena very quickly, frequently using Teleport Slash. His first move in this battle and cast Heartless Angel. It is vital to hit him with Strike Raid at this time. The casting animation for Heartless Angel involves a halo appearing around Sephiroth. If you can attack him before the halo completes, you can stop the casting. Otherwise, still hit him. If hit while casting Heartless Angel, Sephiroth will go into a Stigma right away, giving you enough time, it he cast the spell successfully, you use an Elixir and heal yourself. If you can't hit Sephiroth in time to stop him, you're finished, as he runs towards you and attacks right afterwards with no time for you to heal. Sephiroth uses Heartless Angel periodically during this phase, so listen carefully for him to call the attack and stop him.

Sephiroth's other tactics are to simply run around the arena using Teleport Slash frequently. His other new move Omnislash hits very quickly and can be difficult to survive. You can cast Curaga during the attack, but he'll likely attack you and stop you before you can cast it. A better option is to hit him with Strike Raid when he calls out the attack, as you are invincible during Strike Raid and thus can become immune to his many slashes. After using Omnislash, Sephiroth immediately teleports and uses Heartless Angel.

In general for Phase Two, always have at least two MP so you can use Strike Raid, and keep your HP high. With MP Rage, Sephiroth will be causing your so much damage and restoring your MP quickly, so keep your MP up should not be a problem. When Sephiroth is down to his third (orange) health bar, he will summon a green and black aura, signalling the final phase of the battle.

Phase Three
Sephiroth's final phase begins with him casting SuperNova. The meteors can be dodged with moderate difficulty. When Sephiroth begins the attack's end, target him and use Strike Raid - this will not damage him as Sephiroth is invincible while using SuperNova, but will make you immune to the attack's final hit. Sephiroth also begins using Shadow Flare quite often and using Teleport Slash meanwhile. Although this is daunting to avoid, you shouldn't even try, as during this time Sephiroth is vulnerable and you should use Strike Raid, both avoiding damage and hitting him at the same time. This is perhaps the best time to hit Sephiroth, when he is using Shadow Flare.

Sephiroth also retains all the attacks from his previous two phases. He still casts Heartless Angel but no longer calls out the name of the move, making it vital to keep him targeted to know when he's casting it. Sephiroth also still uses Omnislash, and may even use it twice in a row, so be wary. He also still uses Stigma and when interrupted while casting Heartless Angel.

Although this is easily Sephiroth's most dangerous form, the damage all of his moves can be minimized with deft dodging and usage of Strike Raid to exploit its temporary invincibility. Since he will still be hitting you quite often, your HP should be high throughout the phase and healing yourself and attacking should be no trouble. As long as you can react to Sephiroth's moves quickly and with the appropriate counter, you can defeat him. Just focus on getting in hits when you can and surviving his attacks with Curaga and Strike Raid and he will be defeated eventually.
