As Heartless are technically the manifestation of darkness within hearts, they are capable of possessing other objects and beings; such as the Possessors, Marionettes and Ansem, Seeker of Darkness. When possessing something immovable such as stone, it results in Gargoyle Warriors and Knights along with Thresholder. In contrast, vessels that are designed to move do not show any signs of corruption beyond glowing eyes and a Heartless Emblem manifesting. In Ansem's case, he was able to reshape Riku's body to resemble Terra-Xehanort and even manifest an outfit like Master Xehanort's; all due to retaining his mind allowing him to go further for customizing his vessel.
