The Schwarzgeist is a Gummi Heartless that appears in Kingdom Hearts III. It can be fought in the Misty Stream using a Gummi Ship with 200 or more Speed.

Design[edit]

The Schwarzgeist is based on the SS-01 Schwarzgeist from Einhänder. In both appearances, the metallic ship is a satellite-like shape with two wings on the head, and three leg-like structures on the bottom. Defending it are a maximum of four gray, disc-shaped Shields. These will regularly have an electrical blue aura around them when they are preparing to attack. After the Schwarzgeist's HP is depleted, the Monitor will emerge from it for a shorter second phase. The Monitor, much smaller and quicker than its predecessor, is a beige-colored ship with a similar build to the Schwarzgeist, but much skinnier; its three legs are much more flexible and move similarly to tentacles.

It has a unique battle theme among Gummi bosses; an arrangement of "Thermosphere", the theme played while fighting it in Einhänder. When fighting the Schwarzgeist with the Endymion Special Blueprint, the original version of "Thermosphere" will play instead. Regardless of the ship used, the original version of the Monitor's battle theme, "Afterimage", will be played while fighting it.

Origin[edit]

The SS-01 Schwarzgeist, meaning "black ghost" in German, originated from Einhänder, a scrolling shooter developed and released for the PlayStation in 1997 by Square, as the boss of the 6th stage. If beaten in a certain way it would send out the 'MS-01 Monitor' enemy upon defeat, something it does regardless of tactics in its appearance in Kingdom Hearts III. Its attack patterns in Kingdom Hearts III, most notably its laser-spread attack, are all derived from its appearance in Einhänder.
