In some story mode missions in Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, being defeated several times can sometimes result in a third option to face the mission on a lower difficulty level. In Kingdom Hearts Re:coded, the game over screen may display a hint which appears above Data-Sora, and Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A fragmentary passage- and Kingdom Hearts III show a hint in the bottom or bottom right in game over screens respectively.

Kingdom Hearts[edit]

When Sora's HP is depleted, the screen flashes white as the camera swivels around Sora losing his heart. Afterward, he is shown floating supine in the darkness holding his Keyblade as his heart hovers above his body.

Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories and Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories[edit]

When Sora or Riku's HP is depleted in Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories, the screen flashes red and the camera slows as the character is shown being thrown back. In Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories, the flash is white, and the camera also swivels around the character while blurring. Afterward, he is shown floating supine in the darkness as his heart hovers above his body. In Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories, Sora and Riku are also holding their Kingdom Key and Soul Eater, and their heart only appears if they are defeated by a Heartless. Riku's Dark Mode remains active if he is defeated while using it.

In Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories, when the Continue option is selected, the game resumes where the character was before the battle started with no lost progress in the room. In Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories, the player appears at the start of the room instead and the progress is still not lost.

Kingdom Hearts II[edit]

When Sora or Roxas's HP is depleted, the camera slows down and focuses on the character as he shouts in pain. Afterward, he is shown floating supine in the darkness. If he simply fails an objective, such as losing an Underworld tournament, letting Minnie Mouse be defeated or failing to defeat Demyx's clones in time, he will be shown standing with his arms crossed and a defeated look on his face.

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days[edit]

In Story Mode, after Roxas's HP is depleted, he is shown floating supine in the darkness.

In Mission Mode, every character has their own defeated position, which they will show when they fail or withdraw from a mission:

  • Xemnas: Xemnas holds both hands in the air.
  • Xigbar: Xigbar bends down, hitting his leg occasionally.
  • Xaldin: Xaldin crosses his arms.
  • Vexen: Vexen bends down.
  • Lexaeus: Lexaeus bends down.
  • Zexion: Zexion rests his head on his hand with an arm below.
  • Saïx: Saïx puts his hand to his head, shaking his head occasionally.
  • Axel: Axel faces sideways with his arms crossed.
  • Demyx: Demyx puts his hand to his head, moving his head up and down.
  • Luxord: Luxord puts his hand to his head, moving his head up and down slightly.
  • Marluxia: Marluxia puts his hand to his head with an arm below.
  • Larxene: Larxene faces the side, stamping her foot.
  • Roxas: Roxas bends down. (Identical defeated position for Dual-Wielding Roxas)
  • Xion: Xion bends down.
  • Riku: Riku puts his hand to his head.
  • Donald: Donald jumps up and down on one foot, angry.
  • Goofy: Goofy bends down, putting his hand on his eyes.
  • The King: The King bends down.
  • Sora: Sora bends down.

Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep[edit]

When Terra, Ventus, or Aqua's HP is depleted, the camera slows down, blurs, and focuses on the character as they shout in pain. Afterward, they are shown floating supine in the darkness. If they merely fail an objective, such as not achieving first place in Rumble Racing, they will be shown with expressions of disappointment. Ventus, for example, will be shown with one hand on his knee, and the other hanging loosely in front of him as he pants.

The only exception to this rule is when Terra's, Ventus's or Aqua's HP is depleted when fighting the Vitality Vial - this does not count as a Game Over, but rather the end of the mission. However, losing all HP in other Unversed Missions still counts as a game over.

Failing Unversed Missions, such as by letting the Belly Balloon explode, will not result in a game over, but rather a zero star rank mission failure. The player character will don their usual disappointed stance as if they finished with a one star rank, and a different sound will be played than if they finished with one star.

Kingdom Hearts Re:coded[edit]

After Data-Sora's HP is depleted, he is shown floating supine in the darkness.

Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance[edit]

After Sora or Riku's HP is depleted, he is shown floating supine in the darkness. Under normal circumstances, the bottom screen gives two choices to continue or load a save file. When losing to a boss or a scripted fight, the bottom screen gives three choices, to retry, exit the battle, or to load a save file.

Exiting the battle has the same effect as selecting Continue, where if the character loses to one of the subsequent fights of a boss rush, they will be brought back to the area before the first boss fight. Selecting this option when losing to a scripted fight that takes place before the character can explore the world results in them being brought back to the world map. The player resumes at the save point of the area if used after selecting either Continue or Exit Battle during a Game Over.

Kingdom Hearts Union x[edit]

Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A fragmentary passage-[edit]

When Aqua's HP is depleted, she is shown floating in the darkness with her heart hovering above her. If she is defeated by thorns, her heart does not float above her. Any accessories she has equipped will also appear on her.

Kingdom Hearts III[edit]

When Sora, Riku, or Aqua's HP is depleted, they will be shown floating supine in the darkness. If defeated by a Heartless, there will be a heart floating above the character.

Kingdom Hearts III Re Mind[edit]

In addition to Sora, Riku, and Aqua's game over screen's return, Kairi and Roxas gain them as well. When their HP is depleted, they will be shown floating supine in the darkness. Losing the fight against the Replica Xehanorts will show just the menu, with no characters shown.

Kingdom Hearts III Re Mind[edit]

If Yozora steals Sora's Kupo Coin and is then defeated, he will be shown in the same pose that other characters do when their HP is depleted before the Kupo Coin activates.
