Life's little crossroads are often as simple as the pull of a trigger. — 15:02, November 14, 2010 (UTC) Something that I have recently seen a lot of is that there are many users that join the wiki, and then accumulate many edits, as many as a few hundred. However literally 4/5ths of those edits come from edits to Talk Templates, user pages, and talk/user talk pages. I'm not going to name any names, but this kind of annoys me, since I kind of feel as if they are using this wiki as some huge chat room. Feel free to leave your opinions below.

My views on this subject have been expressed multiple times, in both the forum Dan previously posted and this one. I'm not to pleased when a wave of talk page edits occur for a certain amount of time, but let's look at the contributing factors: We've "recently" added the Mirage Arena, which includes extra talk between users of who they're going to vote for, why, and so on. Lots of new users- I like getting new users to help edit the Wiki, but with new users come a few things we just can't stop: One, most will be learning how to use Wikia's coding/traverse through the Wiki as most who join are first-time Wikia users. Therefore, they will be welcomed by a couple/few users (talk page edit counts go up), followed by asking about talk bubbles (talk page edit counts go up), and if you have to explain what a talkbubble is, even more talk page edit counts. Once they have talkbubbles down, they'll start wondering about userboxes and other ways to customize their userpage (talk page edit counts go up). After they're coding spree settles down they'll start looking at forums and start commenting on them (could be viewed as talk page edit counts). Finally, once the forum/trickle of article edits are done, they'll start wanting emotions for their talkbubble. (talk page edit count goes up). This is just a cycle we ultimately cannot stop, but we can advise new users to go to the IRC for all discussions not pertaining to editing the Wiki. Votes for Featured Media- again, "who are you voting for, why, etc." (talk page edit count goes up) Wiki-princesses- Each user goes through they're own talk page editing spree, but they (normally) stop the massive edits to talk pages. However, some people just don't stop. They talk about anything and everything they want to, trivial or important, and ignore warnings/hints to cease the talk page edit spam. (for any Wiki-princesses out there reading this: please, take it to the IRC. No one cares if your dog, Fido, won the State Dog Competition, or if you lost your last baby tooth over the weekend. Now, the occasional formalities conversation is understandable, but every day? I think not.) Forum:The Keyblade War - Round Two, BBS Bracket A/other Keyblade War forums- (see reason under "Votes for Featured Media") That's a few of the contributing factors. With a new wave of users comes a flood of questions. With the questions comes answers which equal more talk page edits. From what I've seen the past few days I've been active, most edits on talk pages come from new users trying to get to know others, how to make talkbubbles, and so on. Not that big of a deal; hopefully, once they're "on their feet," they'll decrease the talk page edits and move on to actual editing. But that's my two cents on this matter. Mostly about the Wiki-princesses. While I do have some friends who are wiki-princesses or are in the state of one, it irritates me. I know I'm not perfectly innocent either, but there comes a time when you should just open a new tab, go to the IRC, and start editing on the mainspace. And it's not just here. A user I talked to on the Final Fantasy Wiki IRC channel yesterday didn't know what the mainspace even meant. Think about that. Read it again. Keep thinking. And.... This is not a big problem, but, please, to anyone reading this... Mainspace > Talk Pages. Go to the goddamn IRC.

But there's thing, Silver. Some people see talkpages and the IRC as two different ways to communicate with a user at the same time. And then again, I have been princessing lately, too. BUT, we can't all be like Kryten, who literally only uses talk pages for wiki related conversation. KRCCFNF is tired of being STEPPED ON.

The new facebook-esque look (and links to Facebook on the skin) of the Wiki doesn't help the idea that the wiki is some sort of chatroom, which is another reason that this wiki should be changed to accomedate that. As for the more confirmed information-driven Wiki (I don't want to say "serious", but you know what I mean; the Wiki as is is now) that will be moving, it is a bit of a problem, but not a serious one in my opinion. If someone's going way overboard like I did once, then they should be informed what the Wiki's policy is (preferrably with a link to the IRC), like Xion4ever did with me. I don't think we should be allowed to give warnings to people just for being social. Even if they seem to be refusing to listen, we need to assume they've just forgotten (assume good faith; unless they're not even responding to the heads-ups or are being belligerent) and remind them again. If someone's having a little back-and-forth conversation that peters out quickly, I don't think it's a problem. Being new and asking questions about how the Wiki works (including talk bubbles, user pages, etc.) is not a crime; new users won't learn otherwise. Last thing: I don't get what the concern over the editcount is. A good user shouldn't care what their editcount is, as long as they're making quality edits. We can easily find out whether they've been editing the mainspace or not by checking their Contribution history or, on a purely numerical basis, this. LapisScarab Good tidings, friends. The Inexistent - All your base are belong to us... TALK - What you say?!? Back to the "edit count doesn't matter" thing. It shouldn't matter, but that's not to say that it doesn't matter. Let's suppose that I am a noob. I am in need of assistance, so I'm going to ask someone for help. I've learned in my short time here that the number on top of a user's page is how many edits they've made, or, in other words, how much they have contributed. I have also seen the staff page. I've noticed that the people featured here have made several thousand of these things called "edits". So, naturally, I am inclined to ask people with many edits for help. But, how are these people supposed to know what to do if they've only made a handful of mainspace edits? You see, it shouldn't matter, but it is an issue.

"Stop talking to other people and do some actual mainspace work?" I have a feeling that if we warned them, even if it was friendly, it could actually make the problem worse, since the people being warned would have some bad faith against the warners.
