After reuniting with his deceased family members, Miguel learns that he is cursed to become a skeleton because he has removed Imelda's photo from the family ''ofrenda''. To escape the Land of the Dead before fully succumbing to the curse, he must gain the blessing of an ancestor, so he sets off on a quest to gain Ernesto's blessing, teaming up with lowly skeleton [[Héctor]] along the way. He eventually discovers Ernesto, but soon learns that Ernesto is the one who killed Héctor, Miguel's actual great-great-grandfather and thus Coco's father, and took credit for his songs. With the elderly Coco slowly beginning to forget Héctor, Miguel vows to restore Héctor's place on the family ''ofrenda''. Miguel reconciles with his family, defeats Ernesto with their help, and is transported back to the land of the living with Héctor's blessing. Back in the land of the living, Miguel helps a near-catatonic Coco remember Héctor, thus restoring her memories of him. With Héctor's legacy retained, Miguel's family continues to honor their relatives.
