Riku is first seen when he thinks that both Sora and Kairi are being lazy instead of helping him build a raft. When Kairi wanted to race, he didn't take it with much excitement, implying that he has won many races before. As Sora challenge him to a battle that decides the champion, Riku says that he already collected everything he needed to get. At the end of the day, Riku talks with Sora and Kairi about other worlds and leaving the island once the raft was finished. A few days later, Heatless begin to attack the island. Sora finds Riku, but discovers his friend to have accepted the darkness and willing to leave the island. Sora tries to reach for him, but Riku is completely swallowed by the darkness before their hands can touch, ending up at Hollow Bastion. There, he is found by [[Maleficent]], and she offers him a home to live.

Since Riku agrees to gather the Princesses of Heart, Maleficent agrees to find Kairi. Now, Riku possesses a dark blade called [[Soul Eater]]. In [[Traverse Town]], Riku bumps in to Sora. He takes Sora's Keyblade and examine it. Then, he throws it back to Sora and then leaves. Then, he continues to watch Sora from a distance, Maleficent telling him that he replaced him and Kairi over [[Donald Duck]] and [[Goofy]]. However, Riku is still suspicious of Maleficent.

Then, Maleficent reveals Kairi's body's whereabouts, claiming that the only way to save her, is to gain access to [[Kingdom Hearts]]. In [[Monstro]], Riku meets Sora again, intending to use [[Pinocchio]] to help find a way to save Kairi's heart. When Pinocchio is captured by the [[Parasite Cage]], Riku works with Sora, Donald, and Goofy to defeat the Parasite Cage, and save Pinocchio. Then, Riku takes Pinocchio and is followed by Sora's gang into Monstro's stomach. Riku asks Sora to aid him in his work to rescue Kairi, but Sora refuses, saying that Riku's method's are wrong.
